The exorcism/possession sub-genre of horror has been a very effective way to scare the shit out of audiences ever since young Linda Blair brought a nightmare to life 35 years ago. Now the short film Eviction brings us its own take on the subject of demonic possession.
Eviction premiered recently at Toronto After Dark, and we have the nine-minute short in its entirety below.
The film was written/directed by Justin McConnell (The Eternal, The Collapsed), was co-produced by the late Kevin Hutchinson (who also did the F/X work), and stars Robert Nolan (Familiar, Worm, Sick).
Synopsis:
A message of warning. And welcome. A herald of my arrival. Transfer of my energy. Welcome to my world. I am all things, and nothing. I am Nameless.

Aliens co-star Michael Biehn is set to star in a new vampire film called The Eternal from director Justin McConnell. The film sounds like it could be very cool, it tells the story of a 500-year-old vampire who looks to end his life by battling descendants of great warriors he faced in his past.
The horror action film was co-written by McConnell, Adam Kenneth Wilson and the late Kevin Hutchinson. Michael Biehn has always been a badass actor, and I think he's underrated. He should be doing more movies, I'm not sure why he's not.
As a fan of the actor and horror films, I'm looking forward to seeing how this movie turns out! What do you think about Biehn as an actor?

Some directors just have it. They take what shouldn't work and breathe new life into it. That's exactly what writer / director Justin McConnell did with his post-apocalyptic thriller The Collapsed. When I opened up the envelope and saw it was another grim look at our destroyed Earth, I put up a mental wall and said to myself, "Another one of these movies?"
The movie revolves around a family making their way to the town where they once lived. The parents' oldest son still lives there and they want to make sure he is still alive after an apocalyptic event knocks out all communications and wipes out most of civilization. They find themselves running for their lives through the forest while being hunted by two things: armed scavengers they can see and an unseen force that follows them at a distance but won't reveal itself.

Low budget but surprisingly well put together horror-thriller from Canada sees a family of four . mother, father, daughter and son . fleeing Toronto as the end-of-the-world takes place around them. An unseen force is causing the population to start randomly murdering one another and it.s turned the cities into nightmarish war zones. After boosting a car the group makes their way into the forest with the plan of hiking to safety, but their troubles are only just beginning. Justin McConnell.s feature debut is a nuts-n-bolts thriller with broadly decent acting and effects; it.s nothing amazing but certainly passes the time and takes a few surprising risks in its plotting and twist ending.
We begin with a bank of television screens showing stock footage of rioting and police brutality, as...

**full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Justin McConnell of Unstable Ground.

The Collapsed is a Canadian produced thriller released May 27th, 2011 theatrically. This title has also moved to certain cable providers (June 10th) and director Justin McConnell's first feature film is not without its flaws. However, there is a lot to enjoy in The Collapsed. One of the more interesting elements is the post-apocalyptic landscape in which the film is set. As well, the genre of psychological thriller is one, which if done right, creates tension amongst characters while balancing opposing forces of dark and light. The Collapsed gets many of the broad strokes correct, but some of the tension is reduced by a predictable plotline.
A family of four begins in a ruined urban setting, as the father, Scott Weaver (John Fantasia...

We're not the only ones going crazy? In Justin McConnell's The Collapsed, a family attempts to escape the end of the world by heading for the woods, but what if the end of the world starts from inside? This psychological thriller and drama will have several Canadian theatrical showings, including appearances in Calgary (Uptown Stage & Screen), Hamilton (The Staircase Theatre), and Toronto, at the Carlton Cinema. United States based horror fans can catch the film's premiere at the Fangoria Film Festival, later this year. For now, watch the paranoia build in this second official trailer below and support Unstable Ground's latest production, by attending one of the screenings!
The plot outline for The Collapsed is here:
"In the wake of the end of the world a family of four desperately tries to survive against insurmountable odds. Their goal: escaping the city and traveling to the rural community they once called home.

Well, theoretically these trailers are about everything I love. Westerns, zombies, the end of the world, anarchy and boobs. It's a perfect storm, really. Except, of course, both movies look like they were made for about a buck and a half.
Now, that's not to say that there isn't some excellent low-budget horror out there, particularly in the straight to DVD market, which these clearly will be. I just don't know that they're candidates to be the next Mutants.
First up is my favorite of the two, The Dead And The Damned, a tongue-in-cheek zombie western (a truly underrepresented genre). It looks amusing enough, the makeup is surprisingly decent, and it may well be a fun, stupid time. It's written, directed, edited, and scored by Rene Perez, which means Mr. Perez (who has one other film credit to his name) is either extremely multitalented, or flat-fucking broke. The trailer has no dialogue,...

As evidence of the sad reality that financing for independent projects is getting harder and harder to come by, director/producer Justin McConnell of Canadian company Unstable Ground has informed us that production of his upcoming horror film The Eternal has been postponed until 2011. However, that's not stopping McConnell from proceeding with a slightly less ambitious film: The lower budget horror/thriller The Collapsed begins shoots in Toronto during August-September, 2010.
With regard to The Eternal (click here for more info), McConnell says, "The Dtv market is close to dead, and The Eternal as packaged, with the budget and cast that we have attached, is too much of a risk for most investors, given the economy. It’s difficult to get an original independent film budgeted between $2-$3 million off the ground without A-list attachment; therefore, we’re going to rework the project to target a lower production budget and continue to move forward.

It has been some time since we’ve heard anything about Canadian filmmaker Justin McConnell’s vampire flick The Eternal but we got some encouraging news today. As he works towards getting filming started in the Fall he’s gotten together with a couple of lads, one from his short film Ending the Eternal, the other from his upcoming feature, and another familiar name for all you Rue Morgue fans and is creating a series of 12 graphic novels providing some history and back story to the main character of his films, Samuel Gradius. The Art Director for Ending the Eternal, Kevin Hutchinson, and the lead actor for the upcoming film Adam Kenneth Wilson will pen the series with Justin. And Rue Morgue Magazine’s Justin Erickson will be illustrating the novels.
“The Eternal: Final Dawn tells the life (and undead) story of Samuel Gradius, born in 1463 Scotland as Samhairle Greme.

The novel, written by Justin McConnell, Kevin Hutchinson, and Adam Kenneth Wilson and illustrated by Justin Erickson (Rue Morgue Magazine), represents the first step in offering a unique immersive experience for an independent film, as out of the twelve total issues, the first six will be offered online in monthly installments, entirely free and coming later this year. Canadians will get an early glance at the project as it will be previewed at the upcoming Rue Morgue Festival of Fear in Toronto. For now a teaser of the graphic novel can be found here.
