Warner Bros Discovery is circling a possible merger with Paramount – but that’d put its CEO, David Zaslav, in charge of two studios. Sigh.
I’ve never met David Zaslav.
For all I know, the CEO of Warner Bros Discovery may be a lovely, caring man. He may spend his evenings devouring movies, checking on the wellbeing of his staff, and adopting puppies. I hope that’s the case.
This piece isn’t about the personal side of the man. There’s too much of that out there in entertainment reporting, and I want no part of it.
Almost as much as, on a professional level, I want David Zaslav to have no part at all of Paramount Pictures. I think he’s become a totem for much that’s wrong with modern movie studios.
News broke overnight that David Zaslav has had a discussion with his opposite number at Paramount,...

Step into an eerily familiar, dystopian London in the first trailer for Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya’s The Kitchen.
Daniel Kaluuya is just the latest actor to step behind the camera and try their hand at directing. The Oscar winner has teamed up with Kibwe Tavares to bring to life a dystopian vision of London and we have it on very good authority that the film is pretty special.
Take a look at the very first The Kitchen trailer.
The film is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on 12 January for a limited run before hitting Netflix 19 January, so thankfully, we’ll only have to wait about a month before watching The Kitchen. It’s a completely original story, coming from a pair of first time directors and that is something to get excited about.
Here’s the official synopsis: “In a dystopian London, the gap between rich and poor...

Short of the DayHang on to your sanity.
Literally, the word “lachrymology” means “the study of crying.” Philosophically, it describes the belief that spiritual advancement is only possible through pain, both of the physical and emotional varieties.
While The Lachrymist from writer-director Matthew Gowan doesn’t confront this philosophy head on, it is certainly an emotional undercurrent of this taut, chilling, deviously confounding tale of psychological terror.
The plot is hauntingly simple: Savitri (Navi Rawat, Numb3rs, The O.C.) checks into a hotel room with her husband Byron (James Harvey Ward, True Blood, Low Winter Sun). At one point, she leaves the room, but when she tries to make her way back to it, somehow she can’t seem to find it. She asks the staff to help her, but they can’t because she’s not a registered guest of the hotel. Furthermore, they claim to have never seen her, and...

At the start of the Civil War, a Virginia family – led by their West Point bred son, John Rhodes (played by Nathan Parsons, True Blood) – makes the controversial decision to defend the South while freeing all of their slaves.
Battling both his northern brethren and his best friend and brother-in-law, John leaves his three strong-willed sisters at home to run the plantation that is now without a free labor source. The choice to both protect the life they have always known while defending the moral high ground will pit the family against one another and test their strength, courage and love.
Point of Honor also stars Annabelle Stephenson (Revenge) as Kate Rhodes, Riley Voelkel (The Newsroom) as Lorelei Rhodes, Hanna Mangan Lawrence (Old School) as Estella Rhodes, Patrick Heusinger (Revolution) as Colonel Palmer Kane, Luke Benward (Ravenswood) as Garland Rhodes, Adrienne Warren (Black Box) as Abby, Lucien Laviscount (Waterloo Road) as Elijah,...

As Netflix continues to assert itself as a major television company with such acclaimed series as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, Amazon Studios is racing to catch up by ordering series it hopes will be equally well-received. So far, Amazon has scored one big hit in the form of Jeffrey Tambor-led dramedy Transparent, and it hopes to find some more in the new lineup of pilots, which will be made available for viewing as part of the company’s first pilot season of 2015.
Enclosed are descriptions of all seven pilots, courtesy of Deadline. The talented involved on all of them is impressive, to say the least. Mad Dogs comes from Cris Cole (The Bill) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield), while The Man In The High Castle hails from Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files). Amazon is entering pilot season strong with seven pilots for shows with big names attached. The pilots will include hour-long shows Cocked, Mad Dogs, The Man in the High Castle, and Point of Honor, half-hour shows Down Dog and Salem Rogers, and the half-hour docu-series The New Yorker Presents. Cocked is the hour-long dark comedy from Lie to Me's Sam Baum and Manhattan's Sam Shaw. It stars Sam Trammell as Richard Paxson, a man who returns to his rural Virginia family after leaving acrimoniously 20 years ago. Now, Paxson returns with his liberal family to the dysfunctional family he left behind,...

Manchester City won a tough match against promoted Southampton, fighting back from 2-1 down to win the match 3-2 in the Premier League this afternoon. Goals from Carlos Tevez, Eden Dzeko and Samir Nasri were enough to see off the visitors, who scored through substitutes Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis.
City gave a debut to summer signing Jack Rodwell, and Joe Hart returned in goal, while Southampton handed a league debut to seventeen year old James Ward-Prowse, plus Saints debuts for Jay Rodriguez and Nathaniel Clyne.
Southampton started off the better team and showed composure in possession. After Sergio Aguero was carried off injured after a tackle from Clyne, City reacted and won a penalty when Carlos Tevez was fouled by Hooiveld after a lovely through ball flick from Samir Nasri. David Silva’s tame penalty was saved, however, and Southampton were at the very least City’s equals in the first half hour.

From the assistant director of 3 Ninjas: Knuckle Up comes an apocalyptic vision of a frozen hell on earth. Sounds like Alberta, Canada. The film is called 10,000 Days and the first trailer premiered a while ago. Not sure how we missed this one as it looks impressive considering the budget, but hey, you can't be everywhere, right?
Synopsis:
10,000 days ago, Comet 23 struck the Pacific Ocean with the magnitude of all the nuclear weapons in the world. The Best Family was among the lucky few who survived the heat blast and fire storms. And then the freezing began. The comet knocked the Earth away from the sun, encasing the planet in snow and ice. For those who survived, life was violent and dangerous.
The daily battle wasn't just against the punishing climate but against each other for the basic necessities that meant life or death. Still, the weather was growing colder and the ice was expanding.

Another outstanding episode! Does anyone else think this season might be the best one yet?
Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) continued playing the world’s most awkward game of “house” ever on the July 3 episode of True Blood, and I’m really starting to wonder what’s wrong with Sookie. A rich, hot, powerful vampire is throwing himself at her, and she won’t even give him a chance? This girl needs to get her head examined!
Speaking of heads, Sookie is about to have a whole new pile of Eric troubles after his encounter with the witches this week. Bill (Stephen Moyer) sent Eric to break up Marnie’s (Fiona Shaw) coven, and just as his plan seemed to be going smoothly, Marnie whipped out her most terrifying spell yet. Channeling all sorts of freaky spirits, Marnie put a curse on the Nordic Wonder and totally wiped out his memory!

If you watched the last episode of "True Blood", then you know just how broken things are for the show's lead characters. Here are two clips from the upcoming Episode 33, "Everything Is Broken", in which hopefully they'll begin to put the pieces back together.
First up is "Sookie and Bill: The Evening After" showing them doing some house cleaning. Then we have "Sam and Terry". Check both clips out below the synopsis for the ep:
With the ratification of the Vampire Rights Amendment at hand, Nan Flanagan (Jessica Tuck) detours to Fangtasia to confront Eric about the Magister’s disappearance. A grief-stricken Russell vows revenge against his foes, vampire and human. Awaking from a slumber, Bill uncovers the truth about Sookie’s true identity. Jason gets unexpected help as he goes up against Felton (James Harvey Ward) and Calvin (Gregory Sporleder). Sam is distressed by Tommy’s attitude; Tara (Rutina Wesley...

And the body count continues piling up in this crazy, sexy, and bloody Season Three of HBO's "True Blood". Who bit the bullet (or rather, the stake) last night? We're not telling in the interest of avoiding spoilers for those who aren't quite caught up yet, but as is our typical Monday tradition, here are the Post Mortem and Inside the Episode for the just completed Episode 32, "Night on the Sun".
This could very well be our favorite Post Mortem so far: "6 Simple Steps" - A vampire's guide to surviving a werewolf attack. Next is the "Emotional Overload" Inside the Episode in which director Lesli Linka Glatter and writer Raelle Tucker go straight to heart of Sookie and Bill's "can't live with you, can't live without you" relationship.
Below them is a preview of the upcoming Episode 33, "Everything Is Broken", the synopsis of which follows:

Well now, that was not for the squeamish, was it? I'm the wuss who had to turn away a couple of times, especially when Tara was onscreen. Girlfriend had a lot of rage she needed to get out and did she ever. Oh Franklin, we never knew ye! Fare thee well on the other side, my psychotic friend. It was good to see a little bit of the old, feisty Tara using her brain and standing up for herself. On the flip side of the coin, who the hell is writing dialogue for Sookie? Just when I thought she couldn't be more dim, the words that came out of her mouth - they were really just horrifyingly stupid.

Are you starting to salivate for the next episode of "True Blood" on Sunday? So are we and waiting sucks! Here are few stories that are helping us get over hump day!
HBO is shopping around reruns to commercial cable networks. That would be an easy sell for the network, but a few previously sold HBO shows didn't do very well in repeats at their new homes: "True Blood" creator Alan Ball's "Six Feet Under" for Bravo, "Entourage" for Spike, and "The Sopranos" for A&E. [Los Angeles Times]
The fact that "True Blood" broke the Emmy vampire curse and got nominated for outstanding drama series was good news for fans and HBO. The bad news is that one of its competitors is Showtime's "Dexter." Of course, we're rabid fans of both shows. Well, our pals at FEARnet did an "Emmy Death Match" pitting the two shows against each other. We won't ruin the ending for you,...

Season Three of Alan Ball's "True Blood" has been hot and heavy and loaded with surprises, and from the synopses released today by HBO for Episodes 31-35, it shows no signs of slowing down in the slightest.
