The Chinese Dream (the equivalent of the American Dream) seems to entail moving from the country to the urban centers and making a life there. For the scores of Chinese people who follow this direction, however, things are not always rosy and life in the big cities can easily turn into something much worse than they expected. Liu Yulin's second feature focuses on a number of characters that face similar issues in the megalopolis, as their lives are eventually interconnected.

In his second part of an informal trilogy, director Li Yang critiques the patriarchal structures within the rural China. In 2003, his debut feature-length film “Blind Shaft” depicted the grim realities of the mining industry in his country of origin. To the director’s surprise, it was banned from release in China. The rebel director came back in 2007 with “Blind Mountain”, and in 2018 he managed to finish the trilogy with “Blind Way”, which focused on the problem of child beggars.
“Blind Mountain”uses documentary aesthetics to tell the story of young university student Bai Xuemei (Lu Huang). It opens with a scene of her in a bus driving into the region, and this is actually the last time we will be able to see her fully free and mobile. A couple of sequences later, she is kidnapped and sold as a wife to a backward family in a remote village.

Britt Robertson, Kristoffer Polaha, Austin Basis and Reggie Austin are all set to make recurring cameo appearances on Liz Tigelaar’s upcoming Hulu adaptation of Celeste Ng’s 2017 bestseller of the same name. They join the previously announced Jaime Ray Newman in a quintet of actors who first worked with Tigelaar on her 2010-11 CW series “Life Unexpected.”
Robertson will play Rachel, the nanny employed by the Richardsons so that Elena (Reese Withersppon) can continue to work at the local Shaker Heights newspaper. Polaha and Austin will play reporters covering the contentious custody hearing between the white McCullough family and their adopted baby’s biological mother, Bebe Chow (Lu Huang). Basis will play Principal Peters, who runs East Shaker High School and oversees the rebellious antics of the youngest and most troublesome Richardson child.

Part of the official selection for Toronto International Film Festival, Taiwan Golden Horse Film Festival and Shanghai International Film Festival, Rooth Tang’s first feature length film ‘Sway’ is an intelligent look at how globalisation has made the world so small, yet it can still feel so vast.
“Sway” will be available to iTunes, Google Play, Amazon on 9/1/2018, courtesy of Cheng Cheng Films
The film begins in an airport, which is really the precursor to the inter continental journey we will embark on throughout the 108 minute runtime. We follow three different couples living very different lives on three different continents. Parisian immigrant Arthur’s visa is due to expire so he is trying to convince his career-focused partner Vivian to come back to Asia with him. American Amanda is dealing with the difficulties of marrying into a Japanese family to a widower, who is still carrying his demons with him.
