Before World War I breaks out, 15-year-old Anka (Dana Droppová) swaps life in a small Slovak town with her parents for the big city of Prague, working as a maid for a wealthy family. Due to be married off, daughter Resi (Radka Caldová) initially comes off as cruel but is masquerading in a social standing that expects a lot from her. As the two grow closer, they must figure out how their fledgling relationship fits into the bigger picture.

"Your secret will remain yours." Screen Daily has revealed the first official trailer for The Chambermaid, a historical drama from a Slovakian filmmaker that is premiering this week in Estonia. It's world premiering at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (aka PÖFF) which is underway right now. Originally titled Slúžka in Slovakian, the film is described as "a touching romantic melodrama about 15-year-old Anka and wealthy-born Res who is exactly her age, but at the other end of the social ladder." It's a historic story about two female lovers, remaining secret in a world of men, until their lives are torn apart by the chaos of war. "They both realise that they have found a soulmate in each other – like in many world literature classics. The two of them become best friends and lovers, but a tragedy strikes them during World War I." The Chambermaid stars Dana Droppová, Radka Caldová,...

Marcel Marceau’s first public performance was in front of three thousand troops after Paris was liberated during World War II. It wasn’t some Uso stunt, though. General Patton didn’t hire the Strasbourg native to give a show because his men needed a laugh. If anything he gave the stage to the as yet unknown “Bip the Clown” as a reward for everything he did as a member of the French resistance and a liberator himself by taking hundreds of Jewish children across the Swiss Alps to freedom. Those kids were his private audience—orphans seeking solace after many witnessed the murder of their own parents at the hands of the Nazis. They’re the ones who softened his ego-driven dream of dramatic stardom to recognize comedy’s unparalleled cathartic power.
As writer/director Jonathan Jakubowicz’s film Resistance describes it, however, Marceau’s (Jesse Eisenberg) evolutionary thaw also involved a woman,...

"We need to train them to survive." "What good does it do to teach them fear? I think it's important to help the children laugh... in the middle of this war." IFC Films has unveiled the first official trailer for a WWII film titled Resistance, about a young French actor who joins the French Resistance at the beginning of the second World War. Jesse Eisenberg stars as Marcel Mangel, who fought with the resistance in Limoges and helped save the lives of ten thousand Jewish orphans in France. The full cast includes Edgar Ramírez, Clémence Poésy, Bella Ramsey, Matthias Schweighöfer, Géza Röhrig, Karl Markovics, Félix Moati, Alicia von Rittberg, and Vica Kerekes. This looks very powerful and inspiring, even with a few of the cliche war movie moments. Eisenberg, despite not being French, looks to be giving it his all as Marcel. Here's the first official trailer for Jonathan Jakubowicz's Resistance,...

Central and Eastern European filmmakers presented 19 projects at various stages of production at Karlovy Vary’s annual Works in Progress initiative.
The popular industry programme at Kviff is in its ninth year, and past films shown as Works In Progress include I Am, Lunacy, Katyn, Tricks, Alois Nebel and My Dog Killer, among many others.
This year’s selection included a standout pitch for The Disobedient [pictured], a Serbian coming-of-age road movie about two 24-year-olds from Tilva Ros producers Mina Djukic (who will direct) and Nikola Lezaic. The film is now in post for autumn delivery after wrapping its shoot in September 2012.
Another promising Serbian title, of a very different flavour, was the crowdpleasing dark comedy Monument to Michael Jackson (working title). The film will be ready to launch this autumn and the footage shown got the day’s only laughs out of the industry-heavy crowd. The film is a co-production with Macedonia and Germany.
