It was Sage Francis who quoted Kurt Vonnegut who paraphrased John Greenleaf Whittier when he declared “of all the words of mice and men the saddest are ‘it might have been'” in his 2014 song “Vonnegut Busy.” Despite who originated this oft-used declaration, the truth remains that few things are sadder in life than a missed opportunity.
And in 2020, when good news is extinct? Well, could-have-beens feel more devastating than usual. For Archie fans it’s been a rough couple of weeks. First, Katy Keene was cancelled by the CW after its promising first season, and word has come that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s upcoming fourth part will be its last (the remaining eight episodes are expected to air later this season).
This news comes as something of a shock to the series’ dedicated fanbase, whom have become devoted to the program since its 2018 debut. The cancellation is upsetting enough in its own right,...

The 13-member Brockhampton collective are usually described as a pan-racial, non-heteronormative, self-proclaimed “boy band,” a rap group born on the internet and destined for pop domination. All of this obscures what Brockhampton truly is: a savvy, decent alternative rap group who understands the modern cyber-grind. Their output is staggering, a perfect model for the era of content: In two years they’ve released five albums, 20+ music videos, and have starred on their own Viceland TV show. Fifth album Ginger is more proof that they have absorbed all the Very Now...

Schwifty. Poopy Butthole. Roy. Plumbus. Our Us chums select the best, most ridiculous moments from Rick And Morty season two...
Way back in 2014, when the world was a much more innocent place, we did a list like this for Rick And Morty season One. In these current, turbulent times, we grope for comforts of the past, such as quaint top ten lists, so how about another one for season 2! What, you got a good reason we shouldn’t? Get up on outta here with my eyeholes!
10. The Plumbus
The Plumbus is probably the second-most iconic thingy to come out of the second season. The combination of co-creator Justin Roiland ad-libbing a slew of nonsense words and the artists figuring out how to depict those various nonsenses makes for what’s essentially an episode of How It’s Made about an imaginary alien doohickey with no clear discernible function.

From early Lollapalooza to this year's Coachella, hip-hop has always had a place at major U.S. music gatherings.

American music fans had to chuckle back in 2008, when former Oasis co-founder Noel Gallagher raised a giant stink about Jay-z headlining the venerable Glastonbury Festival. Honestly? Hip-hop doesn't belong at big festivals? C'mon, Noel.
Well, we'll see how much water that big cup of righteous indignation holds in the next few days as fans of Tennessee's Bonnaroo Festival weigh in on the news that not one, but two hip-hop legends — Eminem and Lil Wayne — will top a bill that features a dozen other rappers sprinkled in among the usual cadre of jam-friendly acts, indie faves and the usual classic rock big fish.
While Bonnaroo's organizers have long shunned the "jam-band" festival tag, the annual steamy gathering on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee,...

No cause of death given for indie rapper's death.

In the indie rap world, Michael "Eyedea" Larsen was seen by some as the underground Eminem. The talented Midwestern rapper and turntablist, who recorded under the name Eyedea for the Rhymesayers label, died suddenly over the weekend at his St. Paul, Minnesota, home at age 28.
His mother announced Larsen's passing — a cause of death was not given at press time — writing on the Mc's Facebook page, "It is with great pain and sadness that I tell you my son Mikey (Eyedea) has passed away ... At this time we kindly request your respect and our privacy as we process this devastating loss. We do, however, welcome your kind words, memories, and positive thoughts." The family has set up a PayPal account for donations to pay for the cost of funeral services.
Known for his rapid-fire delivery and freestyle skills,...

In the decade or so since Eminem first appeared on the scene with his debut album The Slim Shady LP, he has changed the music game in more ways than one. His breakthrough 2000 release The Marshall Mathers LP paved the way for edgier hip-hop to live at the top of the Billboard album chart. He bridged the gap between the worlds of mainstream pop (he was a staple on "Total Request Live" with the likes of Britney Spears and 98 Degrees), pure hip-hop (he was a well-respected freestylist who associated with Dr. Dre) and the more aggro side of the rock world (his songs were often played on modern rock radio and would often tour with guitar bands). In addition to being the best-selling artist of the past decade, Eminem also changed things culturally (in many ways for the better).

By the time Sage Francis’ fourth album, Li(f)e, draws to a close, the rapper has labeled just about everything imaginable a lie, from his old standbys of organized religion and corrupt governments to existence itself—just in case he missed calling out anything else specifically. Francis doesn’t offer any new truths, though, probably because beneath its surface, Li(f)e isn’t about lying. It’s about romanticizing escape, a preoccupation only hinted at five years ago on A Healthy Distrust’s “Escape Artist.” The obsessing starts romantically with “Little Houdini,” a patient, ripped-from-the-headlines song inspired by ...

The music industry is changing. Anybody who's been paying attention to the past 10 years should know that. There are controversies to how the record labels react to technology's role, especially that of the internet's, in diminishing the respect towards copyrighted materials. Namely, their efforts in suing the fans for disproportionate amounts of money, more as a threat for others than a real hunt for justice.
Interesting to note—and this hourlong documentary serves as a reminder—that the fight had already begun about a decade or two earlier; started, not surprisingly, by emerging hip hop artists of the time. Names like Public Enemy and De La Soul are hip hop legends now, but there was a time when they were regarded as thieves.

Will Oldham has always been insanely prolific, but his résumé has gotten downright ridiculous over the past three years: He's collaborated with Tortoise, Björk, Scout Niblett, Matt Sweeney, Sage Francis, Sun Kil Moon, and Dawn McCarthy of Faun Fables, among others. And there's his lead performance in the movie Old Joy, not to mention his popping up on Wonder Showzen and opposite Zach Galifianakis in the alternate video for Kanye West's "Can't Tell Me Nothing." In fact, it's easy to imagine Oldham's solo work being diverted or diluted by all the extracurricular activity. And yet here's another Bonnie "Prince" Billy album—and it's casually, almost predictably magnificent. But that doesn't mean Lie Down In The Light is Oldham as usual: The songs are full, lush, even sparkling, and their teeming arrangements—woodwinds, electric piano, summer-afternoon copulations of banjo and violin—are the best of his career. The biggest upgrade,...
