Last night, the Visual Effects Society handed out their awards at their annual gathering. It was mainly a good night for The Jungle Book, which took the top prize, known as Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature. It beat back Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, while at the Academy Awards, it’ll be up against Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It was an expected win, but one that was eagerly awaited to try and figure out the Oscar category of Best Visual Effects. “The Jungle Book” is on its way to VFX Oscar gold after getting five Ves nods Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton. “Rogue One,” the “Star Wars” standalone, however, came away empty-handed after receiving seven nominations.
Innovative Disney hybrid “The Jungle Book” won for outstanding feature, King Louie’s animated performance, virtual cinematography, effects simulations, and compositing.
Laika’s Oscar-nominated “Kubo and the Two Strings” earned VFX animation props, “Deepwater Horizon” took supporting VFX and model work for Industrial Light & Magic, and “Game of Thrones: Battle of the Bastards” continued its TV dominance.

Hard Rock International is launching Hard Rock Records, an in-house record label for the cafe, hotel and casino chain. Its first signing, Mississippi-based rock band Rosco Bandana, will issue its debut album in September and perform at a kickoff party for the label June 19 at Hard Rock Cafe Nashville. Like similar branded ventures from Mountain Dew (Green Label Sound) and Converse's long-running "Three Artists. One Song" program, Hard Rock Records is not a revenue play for the company. The final speakers have been confirmed for next week’s Mumbrella masterclass in mobile advertising.
John Galloway, former boss of mobile advertising at Vodafone and now partnership manager at Snakk Media and Adam Dunne, CEO of specialist mobile company Aura Interactive, will present at next Tuesday’s event.
The masterclass is being led by Rob Marston, founder of Zeus Unwired and Digital Chameleon’s Patty Keegan.
Galloway, was among the first people to offer mobile ads in Australia through his mobile advertising company MediaMe. he has also worked at News Limited and Fairfax. He will be speaking on the research and planning behind successful mobile campaigns. He joined mobile campaign company Snakk Media last year.
Dunne will be discussing the creation and implementation of mobile ads including issues around platform choice and whether to build ads in HTML5.

Hard Rock Cafe has announced plans to search for the next big rock band. Hard Rock Rising will be a competition that aims to find new and emerging talent who could win themselves a performance slot at this year's Hard Rock Calling festival. The music event will take place in London's Hyde Park between July 13-15 and the winner will claim a slot supporting Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band who will be headlining the show.
