Exclusive: Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster, an exec producer on upcoming Cannes ensemble comedy Rumours, has called the film “stoopid and hilarious and wonderful” as the production reveals an official first look.
Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander star with Roy Dupuis, Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rolando Ravello, Takehiro Hira and Zlatko Burić star in the movie that follows seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies at the annual G7 summit after they become lost in the woods and face increasing peril while attempting to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis.
Some sites have been reporting the provisional statement is about the climate crisis, which we hear is inaccurate.
The intriguing official first image (above) shows Roy Dupuis as the Prime Minister of Canada and Alicia Vikander as the President of the European Commission. The other roles are being kept under wraps.

Biden Tells Netanyahu: U.S. Won’t Support Retaliatory Strike on Iran. But Some Republicans Want One.
President Joe Biden urged Israel not to launch a counter-strike against Iran, telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the U.S. will not participate in one. Iran on Saturday launched drones and missiles to attack Israel — most of which were intercepted by forces from the U.S., Israel, and other countries in the region.
In a phone call with Netanyahu late Saturday, Biden told Netanyahu, “You got a win. Take the win,” according to a senior U.S. official who spoke with Axios. Biden further told Netanyahu that the U.

Alexei Navalny is dead at the age of 47, following three years of incarceration in Russia. He was the most prominent opposition leader to stand against Vladimir Putin during his 24-year dictatorship.
Navalny was also a documentary filmmaker, directing and producing videos on behalf of the organization he founded in 2011, the Anti-Corruption Foundation. His last work before being imprisoned, and arguably his magnum opus, is “Putin’s Palace,” a 112-minute takedown of the leader’s corruption, written, narrated, and directed (though uncredited) by Navalny, which has received over 129 million views on his YouTube channel.
The opposition leader was also the subject of the Oscar-winning CNN Films documentary, “Navalny,” directed by Daniel Roher. It’s a clip from that film that’s gone viral in the hours after the Russian prison where he was being held announced Navalny’s death. (Russian officials attributed his death to a blood clot.) European Union policymakers have made history, becoming the first legislative body worldwide to pass legislation regulating the use of artificial intelligence technology and to put up guardrails governing the commercial and public applications of AI.
“Europe has positioned itself as a pioneer, understanding the importance of its role as a global standard setter,” said Thierry Breton, the European commissioner who helped negotiate the deal to approve the AI Act, which was passed by the European Commission, European Council, and the European Parliament on Friday, Dec. 8 after a 36-hour negotiating marathon.
Calling the vote “a historic moment,” EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen said the AI Act would provide “legal certainty and opens the way for innovation in trustworthy AI” and would make “a substantial contribution to the development of global guardrails for trustworthy AI.”

Fellini, Visconti, Loren, Heston, Hepburn, Peck, Taylor, Burton … a dream dinner party of talent graced the grounds of Rome’s renowned Cinecittà film studios during the so-called “Hollywood on the Tiber” period — named after the river that runs through the Italian capital.
From the epic Quo Vadis in 1951 right through to Peter Sellers’ Pink Panther in 1963, the city was burning with big film-production energy. Hollywood studios clamored to record runaway English-language projects there, lapping up the local subsidies, lower costs and unfrozen international funds; peaking with Cleopatra in 1963 — at that time the most expensive title ever made. And now, thanks to both enduring appeal and a similar dynamic that created the post-war boom time, the U.S. film world is starting to take very frequent Roman holidays once again.

Comcast’s investigation into ousted NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell stemmed from a complaint filed by CNBC anchor and senior international correspondent Hadley Gamble.
“The investigation into Mr. Shell arose from a complaint by my client of sexual harassment and sex discrimination,” Gamble’s attorney Suzanne McKie of Farore Law said in a statement. “Given these circumstances, it is very disappointing that my client’s name has been released and her privacy violated.”
Gamble, who is based from CNBC’s Middle East headquarters in Abu Dhabi, covers energy, geopolitics and financial markets and is the anchor of “Capital Connection.” She also presents CNBC’s popular documentary franchise ‘Access: Middle East’, where she speaks to world leaders, international CEOs and philanthropists. The 35th European Film Awards took place amid the uncanny beauty of Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik. While it was possible to take a boat from the marina to gaze up at the aurora borealis dancing across the sky, the northern light on Saturday, December 10 came from Sweden and was named Ruben Östlund. The EFAs have a habit of decorating the same film across all major categories, so when his broad eat-the-rich satire “Triangle of Sadness” picked up an early award for Best European Director, it was clear which way the weather was going.
Östlund barely flinched when his name was announced as the winner in this early category — perhaps two Palme d’Ors in five years does that to a man. He first thanked the actress Sunnyi Melles (who was present) for her “great vomiting performance” and then had the grace to pay respects to Charlbi Dean, the South...

Triangle of Sadness, Ruben Östlund’s biting takedown of the one percent, was the big winner at the 35th European Film Awards, landing four trophies including the top prize of Best European Film at the gala award ceremony in Reykjavik, Iceland, on Saturday.
Östlund also won best screenplay and best director, dedicating his award to Triangle of Sadness star Charlbi Dean, who died following a sudden illness this summer, just months after the film premiered in Cannes, where it won the Palme d’Or. Croatian actor Zlatko Burić, who plays Dimitry, a Russian fertilizer magnate in Triangle of Sadness, was the surprise best actor winner, beating out contenders including Paul Mescal for Aftersun and Close breakout Eden Dambrine.

At this year’s FIFA World Cup, all political displays — even ones as innocuous as a rainbow-colored armband showing solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community — have been banned. Host nation Qatar has spent an estimated 200 billion to stage the biggest show in global sports and any on-air references to its questionable human rights record, treatment of women, migrant workers, etc. would just spoil the vibe.
But this Saturday, as fans sit down to watch the sanitized World Cup quarterfinals, another show will be taking place, one where the organizers like to wear their politics on their sleeves. Reykjavik, Iceland, some 5,500 miles, and truly a world, away from Doha, will host the 35th European Film Awards (EFAs).
TV ratings — the show will be broadcast in 10 countries and live-streamed in 24 — are unlikely to match the soccer tournament. But the European Film Academy is determined to use...

Update: NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that a preliminary investigation indicated that a missile that struck Poland was likely from Ukrainian air defense.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella were skedded to join 2,500 politicians, business and nonprofit leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week as the annual gathering kneecapped by Covid is back in person. It reconvenes, a bit subdued, at a critical moment with the world staggering under food scarcity, raging fuel prices and war.

Davos is the place where assembled dignitaries tittered and booed a boastful speech by former President Donald Trump in 2018, but weren’t laughing when he returned in 2020. In 2021, the event was virtual.

Davos is the place where assembled dignitaries tittered and booed a boastful speech by former President Donald Trump in 2018, but weren’t laughing when he returned in 2020. In 2021, the event was virtual.

Italy’s iconic Cinecittà Studios turn 85 this year and it’s never looked so young.
The famed facilities, which in their Hollywood-on-the-Tiber heyday hosted sword-and-sandals epics such as William Wyler’s “Ben-Hur” and were later home to Federico Fellini, are undergoing a major overhaul that now sees Europe’s largest LED wall situated on the lot near Fellini’s huge Studio 5.
Known as Cinecittà’s T18 Virtual Production Stage, the 412-square-meter semicircular screen made up of hundreds of high-def displays that serve as interactive backdrops for actors on a smart set, is one of more than a dozen state-of-the art soundstages being built there thanks to a multimillion-euro cash injection provided by the European Union’s post-pandemic recovery fund.
The revamp is being spearheaded by Nicola Maccanico, managing director of Italy’s Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, the state film entity that operates Rome’s expanding Cinecittà Studios. He has ambitions for Cinecittà...

Exclusive: The biggest Ukrainian media organizations have penned an open letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urging sanctions on all Russian TV channels.
The group, which includes the heads of 1+1 Media, Starlight Media, Inter Media Group and members of the Ukrainian government, asked von der Leyen and her Vice President Věra Jourová to instead recommend European news providers to watch Ukrainian TV news.
The largest Ukrainian media organizations have joined together since the Russian invasion two weeks ago to broadcast a 24/7 United News newscast in order to best keep the country informed.
“Russian TV channels are justifying the Russian war against Ukraine in their multiple news stories, they are withholding the truth about the real scale of the military actions and their own losses,” said the open letter, which accused the Russians of “generating an enormous amount of fake news.”

Rt America, the sister network to Russia’s state-sponsored Rt, is ceasing production after being dropped by DirecTV and Roku following the invasion of Ukraine.
T&r Productions, the production entity, sent a note to employees announcing the shutdown.
“Unfortunately, we anticipate this layoff will be permanent, meaning that this will result in the permanent separation from employment of most T&r employees at all locations,” Misha Solodovnikov, general manager, wrote in a memo. He blamed the shutdown on “unforeseen business interruption events.”
Holland Cooke, who hosted a show for Rt America, wrote in Talkers that “I agreed to do a show this week, and had booked and was scripting on the topic of refugees, a snapshot of desperate Ukraine pilgrims’ plight. But that show won’t air. In an all-hands meeting Thursday (3/3) at noon, management spared remaining Rt-ers the dilemma. We’ve been canceled, by cable/satellite/online distribution platforms.

Plans to overhaul Rome’s iconic Cinecittà Studios and potentially turn them into the top European filming facility were officially unveiled Tuesday at the Venice Film Festival with Italian culture minister Dario Franceschini and Stan McCoy, who is chief of the Motion Picture Assn. for Europe, on hand.
In June, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and Italian premier Mario Draghi jointly visited the Cinecittà lot and held a press conference in its vast Studio 5 — known as the late, great filmmaker Federico Fellini’s second home — to announce a €300 million ($353 million) investment to “adequately meet the growing international demand” for studio space,” as Franceschini put it.
“The exciting thing about the €300 million investment that is being made in Cinecittà is they will have the opportunity now to be at the cutting edge of technology, which is absolutely critical in making the best international content,” McCoy said.
“My advice is: seize the opportunity.

The deal, secured days before the UK was set to leave the EU on January 1, ensures tariff and quota-free trade in goods, and also sets out future security, travel and other arrangements.
The impact on the screen sectors will become clearer as details emerge, with key areas to watch out for including new rules around employment, visas, the movement of goods, and state aid.

Updated, 7 Am Pt: After four and a half long years in European politics, the UK and European Union have finalized terms on a Brexit free trade deal, averting the possibility of a “no deal” Brexit when the transition period ends at midnight on December 31.
As per our earlier story below, the deal will need to be ratified by the UK and EU parliaments. Today there were celebrations on both sides.
“We have finally found an agreement,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in the immediacy after the deal was announced. “It was a long and winding road, but we have got a good deal to show for it.”
“The clock is no longer ticking,” added EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier. “Today is a day of relief, but tinged by some sadness as we compare what came before with what lies ahead.”

A self-imposed Sunday deadline for a Brexit deal has been extended by the United Kingdom and European Union, continuing the crucial discussions on trade. Both sides, though, warned that they were unlikely to reach an agreement.
This latest extension of talks between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson are billed as a “last-ditch effort.”
While prospects appeared grim, von der Leyen said it was “responsible” to go “the extra-mile.” She added that she had a “constructive and useful” phone call with Johnson.
Johnson was less optimistic. He said the two sides remain “far apart on key issues.” He said they will continue to try and reach a resolution by the January 1 deadline.

London, Dec 8 (Ians) British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the conditions for finalizing a trade agreement "are not there due to the remaining significant differences" between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU).
The leaders issued a joint statement after a phone call on Monday, the second in 48 hours, which ended with no major breakthrough, Xinhua news agency reported.
"As agreed on Saturday, we took stock today of the ongoing negotiations," the two leaders said in Monday's statement.
"We agreed that the conditions for finalizing an agreement are not there due to the remaining significant differences on three critical issues: level playing field, governance and fisheries," the statement said.
"We asked our Chief Negotiators and their teams to prepare an overview of the remaining differences to be discussed in a physical meeting in Brussels in the coming days," it added.
