Picking a favorite Marvel character can feel like navigating a fandom minefield. Any of the original Avengers, from Tony Stark to Steve Rogers to Natasha Romanoff, come with their own set of baggage, while some of the best new characters remain as-yet unproven as large-scale heroes. But if there's one major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who is capable of side-stepping all drama and scrutiny, inevitably landing near the top of fans' best character lists, it's Groot. Groot is cute. Groot is helpful. Groot loves to say "I am Groot." He's a trusty, sassy companion and a hero in his own right. He's also a sentient tree.
The character, who is voiced by Vin Diesel, has gone through more design changes than most of his fellow Avengers. At the end of the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" film in 2014, Groot sacrificed himself to save Starlord (Chris Pratt), Rocket (Bradley Cooper...

It was a lot of fun seeing Baby Groot in action and kicking some ass in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Today we have some cool early concept art for the character that was created by artist Josh Herman and they're absolutely adorable. When talking about the art created, Herman says:
"Baby Groot was super fun to work on! When we were told that he was going to be a toddler, I wanted to try doing some concepts with props in them to help in him looking more like child."
I love the child-like designs and facial expressions that he came up with for these. The end result that they ended up using for Baby Groot in the film was perfect. I'm excited to see how they play with him in future films as he gets older. Hopefully, we get to see teenage Groot will be in Avengers: Infinity War!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a great movie, but it’s fair to say that the highlight is Baby Groot. The adorable sentient tree steals the show from start to finish, with even his actions in the background of scenes making the sequel well worth another watch. By the time all is said and done, Baby Groot has become Teenage Groot, and his appearance in Avengers: Infinity War will no doubt be different once again.
Now, in light of the film’s success, concept artist Josh Herman has shared some of his early designs for Baby Groot and they’re a little different to what we got in the final product. Here’s what the artist had to say about his take on the fan-favourite hero...

"These are some initial passes done for the big baddie, Ultron. What a crazy fun project to work on," Avengers: Age of Ultron artist Andy Park says on his Facebook page about the following pieces of artwork. "I don't get to do the more robotic designs that often here given our resident robot experts in Ryan Meinerding, Phil Saunders, along with Josh Nizzi and Josh Herman. But when I do get a chance I just savor the moment. Too much fun!" Do you think these designs are better than what ended up in the sequel? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the usual place. Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, James Spader, and Samuel L. Jackson and hits DVD and Blu-ray this year.

Artist Josh Herman created a couple of amazingly cool pieces of Silver Surfer art that I think fans of the character will drool over. You can see a piece that he did previously here, but these new illustrations of the character are so much more polished and spectacular. This is the same guy who did the Groot concept art we posted earlier, and I would absolutely love to see this design brought to life on the big screen some day. This might just be my favorite Silver Surfer design that I've seen. This is definitely a better design than what we saw in the Fantastic Four sequel. Do you think Silver Surfer could carry a film of his own? ...

Movie concept artist Josh Herman has released some work that he did for Marvel and James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. Groot was such a great a lovable character in the film, he was a favorite character of my two youngest girls. I've always enjoyed the artistic process of film development, so seeing stuff like this is exciting for me. We've seen a good amount of concept art from Guardians of the Galaxy already. In case you missed any of them, you can see some art of Nebula here and here. We've also got a great piece of Howard the Duck art here, and you can see what Jason Momoa would have looked like as Drax here. I wish Marvel would allow for concept art like this stuff to be sold as prints, because they are awesome.

At least ten companies have been credited for contributing stunning visual effects to Marvel's The Avengers Super Hero team up of a lifetime. And among them is Legacy Effects, formerly Stan Winston Studios, who've partnered with Marvel Studios once again for Iron Man's third outing. And now that the film has been released, one of their digital sculptors, Josh Herman, has released some of his work via CGHub, including a Hulk maquette. Click Images To Enlarge I got the chance to work on The Hulk maquette for The Avengers. I worked closely with Charlie Wen and Ryan Meinerding on this since they started the initial sculpts. I ended up fusing them together and adding some finishing touches to it. I got the chance to do the Iron Man mark vii model while working at Legacy FX. What an amazing experience and a great movie! Designed by Phil Saunders.
