Dream Theater have revealed that they’ve started recording their 16th studio album and first with drummer Mike Portnoy in 15 years.
The band took to Instagram to share the news with fans, posting an in-studio pic and a brief caption: “DT16 is officially underway!”
The prolific prog metallers have wasted no time getting to work now that Portnoy is back in the fold. The drummer returned to the band in October after nearly 15 years away from Dream Theater, having initially exited the group to explore other musical paths following 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings.
As for the direction of the new album, guitarist John Petrucci said the band hadn’t written a note of music as of an interview last month at Namm 2024, but that he was excited to be “reuniting with that sort of classic magic that started the band.”
“It’s exciting,” Petrucci added. “And I think that...

Dream Theater have announced the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy after a 13 year absence from the band. The legendary stickman is back in the veteran prog-metal act’s lineup, as his replacement Mike Mangini exits the group.
Portnoy, who formed the band under the name Majesty with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung in 1985, officially exited Dream Theater in September 2010. The drummer had begun working with Avenged Sevenfold around that time, filling the shoes of that band’s late drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. He ultimately didn’t get the full-time gig in Avenged Sevenfold, and ended up out of both bands. He soon lobbied for his job back in Dream Theater, but had been replaced by Mangini.
Recent events have suggested a reconnection between Portnoy and Dream Theater, including the drummer playing on Petrucci’s latest solo album, Terminal Velocity, as well as the pair hitting the road together for a 2022 tour.

Dream Theater’s career has spanned three decades and more than a dozen studio albums. But when it came to the progressive metal giants’ newest effort, Distance Over Time, due February 22nd, they still managed to find new and unique ways to approach the writing and recording process. This time, the New York–based five-piece — guitarist John Petrucci, singer James Labrie, bassist John Myung, keyboardist Jordan Rudess and drummer Mike Mangini — decided to leave town together, heading up to a five-acre property in the Catskills. It was there, in a secluded barn studio dubbed,...

Cinelinx recently had a chance to preview Live at Luna Park, the latest concert film being released by Dream Theater. Check out our review of the film before it hits select theaters tomorrow!
The idea of watching a concert at a movie theater may seem a little weird. The whole purpose of a concert is to witness and experience the performance live and in person. At a concert, you get to be in the same place as your favorite artists and share a night of fun with them. But when you consider the high cost of concert tickets these days, maybe it makes sense. You don’t have to deal with the often riotous behavior of other avid fans and the focus is more on the music itself. Another benefit may be the fact that when all is done your hearing should still be intact. But depending on your perspective,...

Straight away, the task of attempting to rank something as indeterminate as the top ten guitar solos ever is daunting, to say the least. How many genres do you take into consideration? Is acoustic given an equal consideration with electric? Do you judge it based on popularity, complexity, time length, or other factors? Whose opinion do you listen to?
Without further ado, here is one more version of the top ten guitar solos of all time:
Eruption – Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen, 1978). From the instant this searing explosion of notes erupts from the speakers, this aptly-named track stands out above all others as the purest pursuit of guitar playing perfection. Eddie’s virtuoso mastery of finger tapping, gonzo whammy bar dips, and artificial harmonics all come together in a staggering showcase of a man who forever changedthe way electric guitar was played. Comfortably Numb – David Gilmour (Pink Floyd’s The Wall,...

Shuffle and Stories is an attempt to get a more personal look on why we feel the way we do about music. Music is like art, subjective, and that means that everyone has a different way at looking at one album or band. Every week I’ll pick from one of ten songs when my library is on shuffle and talk about the music but also talk about why I personally like it or tell any personal stories regarding the music.
I at one point of my time was a high school student; as such I really liked Metal music. All the dumb 80’s Hair Metal bands, any and all Thrash Metal bands, and of course who didn’t enjoy Power Metal? My guitar friends and I all worshiped at the shrines of virtuosos like Steve Vai and John Petrucci back then, mesmerized by their ability to play every note...

Things appear to be coming together for the upcoming U.K. film Theatre of Dreams. Word is, several actors have signed on for roles in the movie, and David Scheinmann is set to direct. While you might guess by the title that this movie has something to do with theater, or perhaps a progressive metal band featuring John Petrucci, soccer/football fans may recognize the title as the nickname of the ground on which soccer team Manchester United plays their home games. They.d be in the right track, if that.s the case. The movie is described as a .fictional coming-of-age drama about how the club.s legendary manager Matt Busby helps an 11-year-old rascal fulfill his footballing dreams.. The Hollywood Reporter posted the updates on the film, including that Scheinmann will be directing. IMDb doesn.t have a lot on the director, other than that he.s credited...

MP Milind Deora performed at Blue Frog last night along with guitarists Chandresh Kudwa and Paresh Kamat in a unique guitar instrumental gig called Axe-Tortion. “I have been really looking forward to this gig. Thankfully it didn’t take a lot of rehearsing,” says Deora, who is a blues enthusiast. Axe-Tortion is city-based Kudwa’s (Dream Out Loud) outfit, which includes top-notch shredders coming together for a live jam session on stage. Kudwa was inspired by the famed G3 world tour of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and John Petrucci among others; and thought of starting a similar concept in India. “It’s a stage ...

“Of the 10 videos we've done through the years, I felt we have never been truly captured ‘in our element...which of course is on tour, playing to our fans, with our lighting and video show. So I thought it was time to do a video that showed us in our ‘real world’ (unlike the ‘fake worlds’ that are usually created when shooting a promo video),” says Mike Portoy of Dream Theater about the band’s new documentary road video for their new single “Wither” from their 10th studio release Black Clouds & Silver Linings (Roadrunner). See interview with Portnoy about the video below.
Directed by Ramon Boutviseth, who did the same honors for the first clip for the album’s first single “A Rite Of Passage,” the “Wither” video was shot on location in the U.K. (London, Manchester), France (Paris, Lille) and Rotterdam (the Netherlands) as part of Dream Theater...
