Sarah McGuire and Patrick McGee in They Wait In The Dark
One of the hidden gems at this year’s Frightfest, Patrick Rea’s claustrophobic thriller They Wait In The Dark is a small budget film which punches well above its weight. It follows troubled mother Amy (Sarah McGuire) as she takes her young son Adrian (Patrick McGee) across the country to the now-abandoned house where she grew up, trying to hide him from her violent partner Judith (Laurie Catherine Winkel). There are other things contributing to Sarah’s disturbed state of mind, however, and the house itself might represent the biggest danger of all. After seeing it I dropped Patrick a line and arranged to chat, beginning by asking him how he managed to create a film which looks so polished and impressive with really limited resources.

Getting stuck in an elevator is scary enough, but doing so with a bunch of senior citizens? You can be sure filmmaker Patrick Rea piles on the spooky - plus a little silly - in this teaser for his "It's Hell Getting Old" segment of the Hellevator Man anthology.
Kansas City-based Rea's short stars Kip Niven (Jayhawkers, New Year’s Evil), Joicie Appell (Nailbiter), Victor Raider-Wexler (Minority Report), and Nancy Marcy. It was executive produced by Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, Michael Biehn, and Lony Ruhmann.
The script, written by Rea, deals with four elderly people trapped in an elevator on their way to their 50th Class Reunion, and one of them may have forgotten to take some important medication.
The film was shot in Kansas City, Missouri, and the director of photography was Hanuman Brown-Eagle.

Directed by: Patrick Rea

Nailbiter is only writer/director Patrick Rea’s second feature film, but he’s already an accomplished filmmaker, having directed somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 shorts. I’ve seen many of his short films and they are nothing short of amazing, with Nailbiter being no exception. This indie film admittedly has a limited budget, but you couldn’t tell that by watching the film. The movie is so slick and well-made; it would be very easy to mistake it for a big-budget Hollywood production.
As someone that lives in the Midwest, I know first-hand how utterly terrifying tornadoes can be. Rea combines the fear that a ravaging tornado brings with something much more sinister.

SenoReality Pictures and Ministry Machine are co-producing the upcoming indie horror feature Nailbiter. This film combines two terrors in one as a tornado bears down on a mother and her three kids. Their hiding space turns out to be a poor choice with something waiting below. Hopefully that something is not a backed up septic tank. As well, the poster does not give too many clues as to what that something is; however, this first graphic does warn viewers: "in the shadow of the storm it waits." And horror fans will not have to wait long for Nailbiter to release. 2011 is the expected launch date for this terror filled pic'.
As well, SenoReality Pictures is a film production and editing company based in Lawrence, Ks, which has recently completed the films Torture Porn, Next Caller and the award winning Woman's Intuition. Nailbiter continues the SenoReality strategy to create strong thrillers with interesting scenarios.

Everyone has been solicited to purchase girl scout cookies at some point, usually around the same time every year. Some can even claim to have been pressured, coerced or even harassed into buying the tasty little fundraising treats. Hey, a girl.s got to earn her badges, right?
Get Off My Porch (2010) is a fun-filled, darkly twisted tale of a man who finds out just how far two girl scouts will go to ensure everyone enjoys their cookies. Writer and director Patrick Rea (with more than 25 short films to his credit) clearly has a decidedly wicked sense of humor, one that touches on the macabre without actually going there in detail. Rea.s forked-tongue-in-cheek short film winks and nods, but despite all the intensity of the film.s unsettling humor, it remains surprisingly somewhat family friendly. If I were so shallow as to support the ratings code as it currently stands,...

I had the pleasure of meeting director Patrick Rea this summer at Fright Night Film Fest in Louisville, Kentucky this summer. You meet so many people at these kind of events and at each stop not everyone leaves a lasting impression on you. And then there is Patrick Rea, the guy can make a film, from his writing style to the lighting all the way to his direction of setting the mood for the film. I'm so impressed with Mr. Rea's work I'll be spreading the good word on his projects for now on. I also dare to compare his work with a Spielberg, Lucas, Cameron or even a Craven. Being the indie supporter that I am Rea's work comes across not so much as indie work but has the look of a full blown studio effort, the films are really that impressive! One stumbling block that a lot of indie filmmakers hit is trying to stretch what should be left as a short into a feature-length film. Fortunately, there's a writer/director out there who understands that longer doesn't always mean better: Kansas-based Patrick Rea. And apparently we're not the only people who feel that way about Patrick as his cup runneth over with numerous film festivals clamoring to show his wares ... and also rewarding him for his efforts!
He recently dropped us a line with an update on when and where some of his short films will be playing along with a status report on his next two full-length features, Nailbiter and The Mirror Watcher.

We're pleased to present the latest short film from writer/director Patrick Rea entitled "Get Off My Porch", which was shot in Patrick's stomping grounds of Kansas City and Lawrence, Kansas.
It's a horror comedy about a man terrorized by two young girls insisting that he buy a box of their cookies. The cast includes Brad Meehan, Katherine McNamara, and Andrea Strickler; and assisting Rea were Hanuman Brown-Eagle, director of photography, and Ryan Jones, editor and sound engineer. Harry Manfredini composed the score, which really goes a long way toward pulling together the film's comic and creepy elements. It was executive produced by Free State Studios.
"Porch" will be screening at the A Nightmare to Remember Film Festival in San Francisco on June 26th and at the Fright Night Film Festival, which runs July 30th-August 1st in Louisville, Kentucky.

SenoReality Pictures, in association with Free State Studios, has just wrapped production on a new short film entitled "Time's Up, Eve", a supernatural thriller set in the 1940's starring Sharon Wright and Ari Bavel.
Directed by Patrick Rea and co-written by Rea and Jon Niccum, the film was shot in Lawrence, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri. The director of photography is Hanuman Brown-Eagle, who shot "Time's Up, Eve" in black and white to give it a true "noir" feel. Rea and company hope to have the film finished by the end of the summer.
Below are some stills Rea sent over to give us a feel for how the completed short will look:
Rea is currently nearing the end of production on SenoReality's next feature, Nailbiter. Read more about that in Heather Wixson's recent interview with the up-and-coming filmmaker here.
Other SenoReality shorts have recently made the rounds of festivals...

Director Patrick Rea dropped us a line with an update on his upcoming sophomore feature, Nailbiter, and laid four new stills on us as well.
The indie filmmaker has edited everything shot thus far and is now waiting patiently for late spring, when the snow will be gone and the leaves will be back, to complete the monster effects sequences and film pick-ups.
Nailbiter tells the story of a mother and three daughters who get caught in a Kansas tornado and are forced to take shelter in a storm cellar. They become trapped and discover they are not alone.
The film stars Erin McGrane, Meg Saricks, Emily Boresow, and Sally Spurgeon. It is directed by Patrick Rea, written by Kendal Sinn and Rea, and produced by Aaron Laue (Last Breath). The director of photography is Hanuman Brown-Eagle.

We've been waiting with bated breath, and yes, bitten nails, for further news about Patrick Rea's second feature film, Nailbiter, and our patience paid off today when Rea sent over the flick's second teaser trailer. From the looks of things, a storm is coming indeed!
Rea also provided the following update: Editing on what we shot over the five weeks in the summer has begun. We're on [filming] hiatus now till the spring [with] only about 16 pages of script left to shoot. We are aiming to have the film completely finished by the fall 2010. Post-production is going to take some time. We suspect the main factors contributing to Nailbiter's long post process are the monster effects sequences we've been promised since first hearing above the project.

I met Patrick Rae at the Chicago Weekend of Horrors back in 2007. Though I'd already known his work quite well, that was the first time we'd met in-person. At the time we were working on Fangoria TV and Patrick’s films were featured regularly to our lineup. I was taken then and continue to be taken with his fantastic sense of what short films are and can be. Naturally we exhibited Patrick’s short films numerous times over the years – not only on our website – but at almost every Fangoria Weekend of Horrors Convention since 2006.
Patrick has a team and yes, they are all from Kansas. His co-producer Ryan Jones also takes care of the sound design. And his skills at sound design are top notch. Ryan does an amazing job with Julian Bickford’s score. The team also includes Hanuman Brown-Eagle as primary Dp and Josh Robison as primary editor.
