Chicago – Most former kids can agree that junior high is pure hell. It’s the dividing line between the carefree bliss of elementary school and the budding maturity of high school. Suddenly kids are faced with a decision: either assert their dominance over the weakest of their peers or risk joining them. Become a bully or be bullied. Neither option is enticing.
Jeff Kinney’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” book series connected with young readers who related to its awkward protagonist, Greg Heffley, whose misadventures were conveyed through a cheerful amalgamation of journal entries, illustrations and comics. The film adaptations, however, have been more interested in capturing Kinney’s broadly comic sensibility rather than his nuggets of truth. Instead of illuminating the humanity within Kinney’s caricatures, the films exploit their quirks in nauseatingly cynical fashion.

Quadrophenia (Criterion) Franc Roddam’s 1979 film based on The Who’s classic rock opera tells the story of working class lad Jimmy (Phil Daniels) struggling to find his identity in a rapidly changing Britain, circa 1965. Jimmy is a “mod,” a youth movement dedicated to wearing snappy suits, driving Vespa motor scooters bedecked with side mirrors, popping amphetamines and obsessed with the new sound of bands like The Who and The Kinks. Their other pastime is engaging in bloody brawls with “rockers,” throwbacks to the 1950s, who listen to Elvis and Gene Vincent, wear leather biker gear, grease in their hair and drive massive motorcycles a la Marlon Brando in “The Wild One.” Often cited as a worthy successor to “Rebel Without a Cause” as the greatest angry youth picture ever made, it is that and more, including a first cousin to the “kitchen sink” dramas of scribes John Osborne,...

This third film adapted from Jeff Kinney’s illustrated sagas charting the adolescent woes of oh-so-wimpy middle schooler Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) is easily the weakest of this series so far. The first two films were episodic and lightweight, but within their loose narrative structure was an exploration of the frustrating, frequently stressful middle school experience that rang mostly true. The earlier films had bouncy energy and some surreal touches but Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Dog Days is cheap and poorly written. In this installment, school is out for the summer and Greg has a crush on his cute classmate Holly (Peyton List) so he pretends to hold a job at her country club in order to win her over (and to avoid having to spend time with his dad). The usual dreary slapstick embarrassments ensue.

The kiddie movie brought in the bucks. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules premiered in the Number One spot at the box office this weekend with $24.4 Million. Sucker Punch premiered in Second Place with $19 Million. Director Zack Snyder has to be disappointed with that opening. That box office take doesn’t count its international revenue so the film may not bomb. Limitless was Third with $15.2 Million. The Lincoln Lawyer was Fourth with $11 Million. Rango was Fifth with $9.8 Million for $106.3 Million so far. Battle: Los Angeles, Paul, Red Riding Hood, The Adjustment Bureau, and Mars Needs Moms rounded out the top ten respectively.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is a 2011 American comedy film based on the book of the same name. Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Devon Bostick, Rachael Harris, Steve Zahn, Connor Fielding, Owen Fielding, Karan Brar, Laine MacNeil, and Grayson Russell all are reprising their roles from the first film.

In the weekend battle of the flashy, hyper-stylized action flick versus the kid-movie-franchise sequel, it turned out that Rodrick did, in fact, rule. "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" bested "Sucker Punch" at the box office to become the #1 movie in the United States with a $22.4 million debut.
Based on the second installment of the kid-friendly book series, "Wimpy Kid" bested the debut of its predecessor, which took in $21.8 million when it was released around this same time last year. All figures are according to studio estimates.
The $19 million opening of "Sucker Punch," meanwhile, was less than the debuts of director Zack Snyder's previous movies "300," "Watchmen" or "Dawn of the Dead.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice: "As for the movie itself, it's a bore. But it's a bore with some occasionally decent special effects, if you're into gratuitous plasma balls and Tesla coils. Otherwise, The Sorcerer's Apprentice is the sort of movie you're actually thankful to see Nic Cage in because he offers the dimmest hope that a little freak-out meltdown crazy might break the tedium. I'll crush your hopes in advance: It doesn't. Cage is freak-out free in The Sorcerer's Apprentice. And as if to prolong the agony of the film, Cage is the only actor that doesn't chew through scenery like a bat out of Wicker Man hell, which is a shame because Cage is best when he's Loony-Tunes ham-hocked." - Dustin Rowles

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: "Essentially, Wimpy Kid is only slightly better than its trailers ("Wanna see my secret freckle? It's got a hair in it!") would suggest, and it's sort of like "The Wonder Years" with much less charm and no sense of nostalgia. Unlike the young Fred Savage, actor Zachary Gordon doesn't make us feel for Greg, who isn't so much an anguished soul trapped in a short kid's body but, instead, a conceited, opportunistic, and unfeeling prick with an inexplicably inflated sense of self worth. At home, Greg has a sadistic older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) and inattentive parents Susan (Rachael Harris) and Frank Heffley (Steve Zahn, nooooo) who are portrayed as idiots. At school, fellow outcasts Fregley (Grayson Russell) and Rowley (Robert Capron) are company; the latter is Greg's best friend from grade school, who is suddenly a huge embarrassment with a girly bike, rotund body,...

For those who aren't familiar with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, author Jeff Kinney's so-called "cartoon novel" series has sold somewhere in the vicinity of 24 million copies. Each title of the series executes the same gimmick, that is, a fictional journal written (in childish handwriting upon blue lined paper) by titular "wimpy kid" character Greg Heffley, a sixth-grader learning to navigate the social vacuum of middle school. As reading material, it's undemanding stuff but succeeds through a dryly observant narrator as well as amusing stick-figure drawings, which serve to randomly punctuate the miseries of middle school. Since there's more than one book of this series, the time must have seemed ripe for a prospective movie franchise.
Or something like that.
Director Thor Freudenthal, just as in his recent Hotel For Dogs, jumps immediately into the action of Greg's humiliating world and attempts to really get inside these kids' heads.

'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' not wimpy at all! This is a motion picture I head absolutely nothing about until around a week before it hit theaters. Needless to say, 20th Century Fox released "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" this last Friday and while it didn't stick with some critics, the ones it did stick with, it stuck hard.
The film stars Zachary Gordon, Chloe Moretz, Steve Zahn, Rachael Harris, Robert Capron, Devon Bostick and Grayson Russell.
None of the staff at Reel Empire has had the chance to see "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" yet, so we're merely forming a temporary opinion off of what top film critics in the industry have stated.
Ty Burr from the Boston Globe was far from please with the film stating, "I get it, I get it -- redemption and life lessons await. But they're awfully slow in coming and half-hearted when they appear,...

'Diary Of A Wimpy Kid' movie delivered good, funny entertainment. 20th Century Fox released its new comedy movie, "Diary Of Wimpy Kid" this weekend, and I must say that it was quite funny and entertaining. I already thought it was going to be funny, but it delivered a little more in my opinion. It stars: Zachary Gordon, Chloe Moretz, Steve Zahn, Rachael Harris, Robert Capron, Devon Bostick, and Grayson Russell. "Diary Of A Wimpy Kid" revolved around character Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) who just started his middle school experience. When he arrives at school, he finds that he might not quite fit in the way he hoped. He hooks up with his friend Rowley Jefferson (Robert Capron) who doesn't really know the ropes of fitting into middle school, and ends up embarrassing Greg a lot.

Based on the 1st of four successful illustrated books, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid follows around clever Greg Heffley and his adventures in middle school. He’s a bit of a smart-alec who logs everything into his “its not a diary, its a journal,” complete with the horrors of cooties, bullies, icky girls, and the dreaded “cheese touch,” all of which make a grown-up want to get as far away from middle school as possible. Greg figures that if he can rise above all “the morons” to become popular, it’ll be smooth sailing right through to high school.
After an extensive nine-month search, the producers found the perfect Greg in Zachary Gordon. If you’re a fan of Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, you’ll see that his wisecracks are exactly as portrayed in the book. Wary of his big brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) who plays a prank of...

'Diary Of A Wimpy Kid' movie gets pretty good reviews from top critics. 20th Century Fox hit the mark pretty good with the release of its new family/comedy flick entitled, "Diary Of A Wimpy Kid" in theaters, today. Most of the top movie critics seemed to like it,giving it As and Bs,mostly Bs. However there were some that really didn't take to it,and gave it a D and a C. The movie stars: Zachary Gordon, Chloe Moretz, Steve Zahn, Rachael Harris, Robert Capron, Devon Bostick, and Grayson Russell. Ty Burr from the Boston Globe gave it a D+. He said, "I get it, I get it -- redemption and life lessons await. But they’re awfully slow in coming and half-hearted when they appear, and by then we’ve lost patience." Roger Ebert over at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a very strong A-.

Chicago – “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” and main character Greg Heffley, is familiar to a generation of kid book lovers through the line drawings of creator Jeff Kinney. The film version has child actor Zachary Gordon bringing Greg to life.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Greg Heffley is starting his first day of middle school, and is desperate to fit in on his self-proclaimed popularity index – he is a generously ranked 19th. The problem is he is associated with some less-than-popular fellow travelers. His best friend Rowley Jefferson (Robert Capron), is still stuck in the less cool elementary school mode (he asks Greg to come over and “play” rather than “hang out”) and Greg is also forced to eat in the cafeteria on the floor with the dreaded, weird Fregley (Grayson Russell).
But he does have a mode of survival. It is his diary, in which he chronicles his adventures and tragedies through the school year ordeal,...

How does one say anything bad about Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Like this...It was charming but tiresome. Perhaps that is the expectation though, since the plot revolves around a kid starting middle school. The flick is delivered as a straight-up comedy and somehow managed to get rated PG. Most of the 90 minutes in this piece is harmless, save for a scene that involves a kid peeing on his older brother.
What's tough to figure out is if this was intended for the high school and up audience. Or is this for the kids? Probably a little bit of both, and that is why this may not entertain certain groups the whole way through. The best way to review this flick is using the old weapon of comparisons with other films. Well get to that in a moment.

The first trailer for the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie arrived late last week, and now we have the first look at the official poster.
We love that it features the middle school "morons," and are also intrigued by the prominence of illustration for a live-action adaptation. Chirag Gupta (Karan Brar), Angie (Chloe Moretz), Greg (Zachary Gordon), Rowley (Robert Capron), and Fregley (Grayson Russell) look like only an obligatory footnote.

Getting its start as a popular Web comic, Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series has sold millions of copies and turned just as many little boys into readers. Dads dig them. Little girls have even been known to read them.
Now the hard part: making a movie that meets the fans' sky-high expectations. Information about the movie has been scarce, and only a few pics from the set have turned up. At least we know who's been cast.
Who's playing the wise-cracking hero in the live-action movie? And, more important, what do we think of the casting? Find out in Meet the Cast of Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Next Showing: Diary of a Wimpy Kid is set for an April 2, 2010 release
