Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What are your winter holiday season viewing habits (that are not for work)? Do you have traditional go-to shows or movies? Are you looking forward to anything in particular?
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
As I have written in the past, I’m not the kind of critic who loves holiday specials. Too often, they’re too hokey, too commercial, too weird (yes, Bill Murray, I still don’t get “A Very Murray Christmas”) or, in the case of countless Hallmark Channel movies, way too white. But I do have a few holiday media traditions, starting with my Spotify Holiday Tunes playlist, which gets fired up as...

The Golden Globes are traditionally TV’s awards disrupters. With so many new shows nominated, it elevates them long enough to (potentially) make a difference at the Emmys. But the SAG Awards are a more telling barometer of industry enthusiasm.
Actors make up a large chunk of the TV Academy membership — much more so than the 80-odd members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — which means seeing what they’re rewarding in December can often predict what might be a player when Emmy season begins next spring.
With so many shows launching in April to take advantage of Emmy voting, series that premiere in the fall need Globes and SAG Awards love to keep buzz alive through the winter and into the spring. Shows like “The Deuce,” “Glow,” “Ozark,” “Mindhunter,” “Godless,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and “Smilf” are aiming for a little extra attention right now.

Undo is a good episode of Mr. Robot, an excellent episode of television altogether, and ultimately one that I find troubling.
It’s a good episode because all episodes of Mr. Robot inevitably are. We talk about the style of this show to the point of critical self-parody sometimes but how can we not? This, only the second episode of the season, opens with an extended montage set to New Sensation as Elliot clocks in to his new day job at Evil Corp day after day, hallucinates his fellow subway riders wearing deadmau5-style emoji helmets, and gets no fewer...

According to a new report from the people over at the Christian Post , some new celebrities names have already started turning up as possible houseguests for the upcoming Celebrity Big Brother edition that's due to air this winter 2018. Before we start running off these names, we want to say that none of these people have been officially confirmed to appear on the show. Some of them are just rumored to possibly be in talks to appear on the show, but no official decisions have been made by CBS. It does make sense that the network would actively be in talks right now with multiple celebrities as they're trying to get the season put together in time for a possible January or February 2018 premiere date. With all that said, the Christian Post is reporting that Skid Row front man Sebastian Bach is reportedly in talks with the show to possibly participate.

Now that my Emmys hangover has finally almost subsided and I’m not busy filling out my predictions or Gold Derby ballots, for, at least until Oscar season starts in the next upcoming months or seconds however early it starts this year. Whenever I am caught up in awards frenzy, I’m always amazed I get some who have some variation of this response from some in the film community:
“I don’t like award shows”
I hear that refrain a lot. It happens more at Oscar time than during the Emmys, but it comes up. It’s a nice rejection of the traditional process of giving out prizes for people who are, in all other words, doing their job well, but, I don’t quite understand that statement. It’s sorta like, the same way I don’t understand how someone can say, they “hate reality shows” or they...

“Westworld” was an Emmy winner in 2017.
Despite not hearing its name called at the Primetime Emmy Awards, the HBO drama snagged five Emmy awards at the Creative Arts ceremonies the weekend prior. Yes, those five early wins were supposed to signal more to come on Sunday, September 17, but that didn’t happen. “Westworld” went home empty-handed, capping its total win count at five.
Now, however, is not the time for fear, “Westworld” fans. HBO’s big bet to replace “Game of Thrones” during its year-off from the Emmys had already beaten expectations by pulling in 22 total nominations — tied for the most of any program in 2017 with “SNL” — but its showing at the Emmys is more important for the future than the present. It all-but-guaranteed “Westworld” will be a major player in 2018. In fact, it might be HBO’s new frontrunner, surpassing two-time champion “Game of Thrones,” and here’s why:...

This may be the most unpredictable Emmy race in years, particularly on the drama side. “Stranger Things” and “Veep” lead the Emmy odds according to the prognosticators at Gold Derby, but don’t count out shows like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Black-ish” and “Atlanta.” At least, that’s the takeaway from a handful of writers, producers and directors who agreed to anonymously share their Emmy ballots with IndieWire.
Not that this year’s picks were easy to make. “I watch a lot of TV,” said one writer. “And yet there is not a single category where I have seen every nominee. Seems impossible to judge — and crazy to think a winner is actually the best, rather than just the best of what most people have seen.”
That’s the high-class problem of Peak TV, and why outlets like HBO and Netflix spend handsomely on For Your Consideration campaigns. That’s...

Slate includes hour-long drama from Channing Tatum’s production company Free Association.
First Look Media’s Topic studio has unveiled its development slate for scripted TV series, with projects from Alex Garcia Lopez, Erin Foley-Chan and Channing Tatum’s production company Free Association.
Hunger, written by Garcia Lopez, is a geopolitical thriller about the powerful, covert and dangerous business of the global food industry. With nods to Traffic and The Night Manager, the hour-long series promises to be a provocative, uncompromising and international drama exposing an urgent and imminent crisis relatively unknown to the world.
Trying, written by Foley-Chan, is part of a first look deal with executive producer Daniel Powell. The half hour comedy follows Erin Foley-Chan, a chronic people-pleaser who can’t resist helping everyone around her. When told that she is infertile and cannot have a child without arduous treatments, she’s forced to deal with her own problems, for once.

Chicago – It was show time for two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda, as she accepted a Career Achievement Award from Cinema/Chicago at the Radisson Blue Aqua Hotel, and participated in a tribute night – moderated by Chicago Sun-Times Film Critic Richard Roeper – on Saturday, July 29th, 2017.
Jane Fonda is part of Hollywood royalty, the daughter of Henry Fonda and the sister of Peter Fonda. She studied at Vassar College and was a member of the Actors Studio in New York City, before making her film debut in “Tall Story” (1959). The 1960s were an ingenue era for her, as she appeared in “Sunday in New York” (1963), “Cat Ballou” (1965) and “Barefoot in the Park” (1967). She changed her image to sex symbol with the cult film “Barbarella” (1968), before embarking on a run of great character roles which included her Oscar Best Actress wins for “Klute” (1971) and “Coming Home” (1978). This could be the year that Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes Emmy history.
Nominated once again for playing Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep,” Louis-Dreyfus is the favorite to win her sixth consecutive Emmy as outstanding comedy actress. In doing so, she would beat the record for most Emmys won by a performer in the same role for the same series.
Right now, Louis-Dreyfus is in a three-way tie with Candice Bergen (“Murphy Brown”) and Don Knotts (“Andy Griffith Show”). All three thesps won five Emmys for their roles on those shows. Now, Louis-Dreyfus is poised to leap ahead.
What’s more, she’s also in line this year to tie Cloris Leachman for the most Emmys ever won by a female performer. Leachman has eight; Louis-Dreyfus has seven – tied with Mary Tyler Moore and Allison Janney. (Janney, of course, is competing with Louis-Dreyfus in the comedy...

Ah, the 2000s — an indefinable decade of war, social progression, and an explosion of prestige TV. With so much great television came many, many great television characters. The best shows were built on battles of quality characters: Is Don Draper better than Peggy Olson? Lorelai Gilmore or Rory? Walter White or Jesse Pinkman? Or is there a third, less-referenced character who’s the secret star?
These aren’t problems by any stretch of the imagination: Great characters lead to better episodes, seasons, and series, so having too many is hardly a handicap in a medium with so much time. But before standalone episodes started trending, these were the best characters during the onset of TV’s new golden age.
A few rules, to keep things sane: Characters had to be created between 2000 and 2009. So even if the show was created before we knew Y2K wasn’t worth the worry,...

Amidst the chorus of people saying that TV is better than it’s ever been, you’ll always find one person lamenting the decline of the theme song. While it’s true that the days of minutes-long intros with original songs and catchy melodies might be in the past, there’s no denying that shows are still finding memorable (and in a few cases, iconic) ways to open each episode.

Although the argument of TV vs. film primacy has moved to the point of psychic exhaustion, “cinematic” remains the #1 adjective used in every Emmy pitch. The highest praise that can be accorded small-screen stories is when a creator’s vision is expressed in visual language… that evokes a movie.

Whether you side with the Occupation or the Resistance, you can rejoice with the news that the USA Network has renewed Colony for a third season.
Multiple outlets, including THR, report that a 13-episode third season of Colony will premiere sometime in 2018 (the first two seasons had January premieres). Created by Carlton Cuse and Ryan J. Condal, the series takes place in a Los Angeles under siege by enigmatic aliens known as "Hosts." While the Hosts and their drones employ murderous methods to keep people in line, it's the humans that work for them that can be the most brutal. The second season finale of the series airs this Thursday, April 6th on USA.
Featuring a potent blend of family drama, political chess moves, and expertly choreographed action scenes (the show's long-take firefights are intensely realistic and marvelously shot) against the backdrop of an intriguing sci-fi mystery, Colony continues to...

The 21st Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony was billed as a “Return to Hollywood.” Backdrops from classic films dotted the interior of the Ray Dolby Ballroom lobby. Johnny Crawford and his Orchestra kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Hooray for Hollywood.” Even a handful of the evening’s big winners were films that fit the theme perfectly.
As expected, “La La Land” continued its storybook run through awards season, with David Wasco’s team winning for Contemporary Film. In an upset, Wynn Thomas and the team from “Hidden Figures” took home honors in Period Film, despite “Hail, Caesar!” being the only of the category’s nominees to also pick up a nom for Oscars night. “It’s been a long journey to this moment,” said Thomas, who described being nominated at the very first Art Directors Guild award for “Mars Attacks!” “I’m so...

Last Week’S Podcast: Seth Meyers Reflects on This Crazy Year, and How He’s Gearing Up for 2017 – IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast
“One Day at a Time” executive producer Gloria Calderon Kellett can’t be boxed in. The writer, producer and even performer has written countless plays, has worked on multi-camera sitcoms (“Rules of Engagement”), single-camera comedies (“How I Met Your Mother”), hour-long dramas (“iZombie,” “Devious Maids”) and more.
Now, along with Mike Royce (“Men of a Certain Age,” “Enlisted”) and the legendary Norman Lear, Calderon Kellett is behind Netflix’s new take on Lear’s “One Day at a Time.”
Together they have come up with a new show that has won over critics, most of whom are predisposed to hate remakes and reboots.
The basic concept of the new “One Day at a Time” remains the same: A single mother raising her teenage kids. But a lot is different.
