The great city of Liverpool has been well served by the sitcom industry over the years. The Liver Birds, Boys from the Blackstuff, Bread, The Royle Family. These are all highly successful and highly watchable, if occasionally mordant. They all fell into a bit of a pattern – a recipe of sorts, like Scouse itself (originally a stew of course) – with similar essential ingredients: wit, irreverence, strong women carrying weak men, a family theme, and a certain sassy style.
ITV’s latest stab at sitcom success, The Family Pile, falls uneasily into this line of succession. In this case, the mixture is: four sisters recently bereaved; three husbands-slash partners; three kids; one affair between a sister and another sister’s hubby; and one very large house. With the recent death of the siblings’ mum, following closely on from that of their dad, eldest sister Nicole (Amanda Abbington) sneakily puts their childhood home on the market,...

This Bridgerton feature contains spoilers for the series.
Although Netflix’s Bridgerton has actively resisted the label of historical accuracy in favor of a fantasy approach to the era, it is still worth uncovering which scenes, events, and references represent a more creative interpretation to history and which are references to real events.
Dr. Hannah Greig, the historical advisor to the series, describes Bridgerton as “a combination of a historical truth – which is to say that the past is more diverse than we tend to see on screen, and we tend to accept in our popular imagination. But it’s also a fictionalising, asking what history might look like under certain different circumstances.” This approach is in keeping with the novel series the show is based on which blends the Regency Era with modern romantic fantasies. Here’s a list of some of the plots where alternate history may or may not be a factor.

*Spoilers for Gangs of London to follow*
The first season of crime drama Gangs of London arrived all at once on Sky Atlantic and Cinemax with a bang. Allegiances were formed and broken, the body count was high, and those who did survive until the final episode were left in limbo. Gangs of London series 2 has yet to be officially announced, though it seems like a definite possibility given the buzz around series one – THR reports that talks are in progress after the show became Sky Atlantic’s most binged of the year, and second biggest original drama launch ever, after Fortitude.
All three directors – Gareth Evans, who’s also the co-creator of the show, Corin Hardy, and Xavier Gens – have expressed an appetite to return. So what would they like to see Gangs of London season 2 cover? We chatted to all three to find out.

Landing last week on Sky and Cinemax, Gangs Of London has been one of the most thrilling and explosive new shows around (check out our review) with a cliffhanger ending that leaves things open for more action.
While Gangs of London series 2 hasn’t been confirmed, there seems to be an appetite for it from show co-creator (along with Matt Flannery) Gareth Evans. Evans told The Metro:
‘There’s room for it. Without giving too much away, we definitely end the season on a note where people will be wanting more and asking what is happening next.
‘I’m treading carefully! It’s sort of a cliff-hanger but as most things it’s a story that takes on a lot of different aspects, there’s a lot of different characters in there, a lot of vested interests, there’s a lot of stray threats trailing in the wind ready to be picked up again.

Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. You’ll find 2015′s answer to Whiplash located somewhere in the stack below. Click on the individual titles below, for the film’s profile.

The main title theme song for “True Detective” now comes to mind when I think of the unfairly talented Cary Fukunaga. A scheduled autumn award season release is strategically more sound, and Focus Features, who rarely make an appearance at Sundance with a finished film, might take advantage of the fact that this is where the filmmaker broke out with Sin Nombre. Shooting on Beasts of No Nation took place this summer in Ghana and we’d expect this to be sizeably larger budget item fit for a Premieres slot. The long in the works adaptation of Uzodinma Iweala’s bestselling novel starring Idris Elba (in the lead role of the Commander) is definitely a long shot, but not impossible. Non-professional child actors make up the cast, while on the tech side we find Production Designer Inbal Weinberg (St. Vincent) in the mix.
