Grand Funk Railroad have announced a US tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of their 1973 album We’re an American Band and its hit title track.
The veteran rockers will kick things off with an appearance at the Clewiston Sugar Festival on Saturday (March 18th) in Clewiston, Florida. From there, they’ll play an April 1st show in Akron, Ohio, followed by select dates throughout April, May, June, and July. The tour’s final headlining show is set for July 7th in St. Louis, with Grand Funk Railroad then supporting Kid Rock for a two-night stand in their hometown of Detroit on July 14th and 15th.
Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster. Alternatively, you can look for deals or find tickets to sold-out shows on StubHub, where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

For being so popular the band didn’t get a lot of critical acclaim in its day, and yet one couldn’t talk about rock and roll in the 1970’s without at least mentioning Grand Funk Railroad. They sometimes just announced themselves as Grand Funk to keep the name nice and short but everyone knew who they were right away before they hit the stage. Their arena-style music would pack the crowds in from miles around and keep them entertained throughout the entire show. Grand Funk was actually a play on words and was taken from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad that

Connie Hamzy deserves a movie. In case you don’t know the name, she is the Queen of the classic rock super groupie culture. The movie would be amazing with details of Connie’s double life – substitute teacher and legendary nymphomaniac with a focus on rock stars. Grand Funk Railroad’s “We Are An American Band” could be on soundtrack. And songs by Led Zepplin, etc. Some of the film’s highlights could be: – She’s still with the band – Let’s spend the Night Together book and documentary – her first intimate experience with a famous rocker, Steppenwolf? – what really happened

The Fahrenheit 9/11 director has spent the past 11 days putting together this film to explain why, though he voted for Sanders in the primary, he is going for Clinton now
Despite some reassurance from polls, many are still worried about Donald Trump beating Hillary Clinton. Some deal with this anxiety through prayer, others get on the internet and rage. If you are Michael Moore, you go and shoot a movie and have it debut in New York City 11 days later to tremendous international fanfare.
Moore, the most famous thing from Flint, Michigan besides Grand Funk Railroad and poisonous water, understands more than most just how appealing a “fuck you” vote for Trump would be. In his new emergency film, Michael Moore in TrumpLand, he thinks his way inside the head of a dejected working-class citizen from, as he puts it, one of the “Brexit states” of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin or Ohio.

57 years ago today, Disney’s Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Fox Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles. It was the last film based on a fairy tale that the House of Mouse made for over 30 years, until 1989’s The Little Mermaid, since Sleeping Beauty underperformed at the box office, leading to massive layoffs at Disney. The successful release of 101 Dalmatians in 1961 ended up saving Disney Animation. Though Sleeping Beauty wasn’t a hit at its debut, the film’s become a beloved Disney classic, with Aurora in her pink dress (you win, Flora) prominent among the lineup of Disney princesses, and with Maleficent now an iconic animated villain. Maleficent got her own movie starring Angelina Jolie in 2014. Other notable January 29 happenings in pop culture history: • 1845: Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven was first published in the New York Evening Mirror. • 1942: BBC Radio first aired “Desert Island Discs.” Still on the air today,...

The barkeeps and patrons of Matt’s Saloon in Prescott, Ariz. probably thought it was just another normal Friday night, but Sept. 29, 1989 — 26 years ago today — was not another normal night. What made it a rather unusual evening for the sleepy town was the presence of a rock star in Matt’s Saloon: Bruce Springsteen was playing an unannounced performance at the bar. He rolled into town on a motorcycle with some buddies and wound up in a jam session with the house band. Springsteen, wearing a leather vest and a bandana around his neck, played “I’m On Fire” from his 1984 album “Born In The U.S.A.,” but when the band asked him to play “Pink Cadillac,” the rock star said he couldn’t remember the words to his hit song, recalled Denny Orr, the rhythm guitarist for the house band. Orr also said that things “went nuts” in the bar...

Artists from Adam Levine and Blake Shelton's teams stepped up Monday to wow the audience on The Voice's first night of live playoffs. Two previous standouts - passionate soul singer Damien and charismatic Southern rocker Craig Wayne Boyd - showed again why they're competitors to watch, as the show narrows its field this week from 20 to 12 and viewers can vote for the first time. Team Adam's Damien, a Louisiana native and Tsa agent, crooned Sam Smith's "I'm Not the Only One," showing off mad vocal range and some church-revival fervor as he got inside the song's lyrics of want and betrayal.

If you were a kid in a record store in the early 1980’s, you saw this poster. Our record store was poorly lit with carpet crawling up the walls where you could thumb through albums with provocative covers while your parents ran their errands. Ahh, innocence lost. I couldn’t recall an animated film like this before or since, but the most significant thing that I can remember about “Heavy Metal” is that it taught me that animation can have adult and horrific elements. This movie scared me a little.

Kiss was recently inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame after forty years of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. Unlike other bands, not all of their current and former associates were asked to share the honor. The Hall of Fame only awarded original members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss in the ceremony which took place on April 10, 2014.
Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons were enraged by the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame's decision and refused to perform at the event. How could thirty years of hit records and songs still being played in their concert sets just be ignored? Not only were the two founding members of Kiss irritated by this, but many fans of the band's music past their early makeup days were as well.

Never underestimate the power of Blake Shelton on The Voice.
Although his team lacks a country singer and it seems like the deck has been stacked against him, the three-time winner was still able to hold onto all three of his contestants in the first 100 percent viewer-voted elimination of the season. None of them were even in the bottom three! A pretty amazing feat considering Austin Jenckes was one of only three contestants who didn't crack the top 100 of the iTunes songs chart this week.

It's Day Two of the Battle Rounds in Season 5, "Voice" fans. If you didn't get a chance to see last night's battles, check out our recap. But we have another hour of battles tonight. Again, what are Battle Rounds? Coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green each put one artist from their team of 20 against another, dueling with everything they've got until one is dismissed (unless another coach steals them for their team, and then everyone stays.) CeeLo and Adam haven't used a steal yet, and the previews say we're in for a good show. So, let's go. And did we mention Cher is in the house mentoring again? This can only be good.

These past few months, I've grown weary trying to find albums that engage me from start to finish. In fact, I've yet to find one album in the past few months I can listen to top to bottom. I truly believe that we are back in the land of "singles." Not saying that a Blood on the Tracks, Dark Side of the Moon, Ok Computer, or (What's The Story) Morning Glory? isn't lurking in the shadows, but.... I'm old enough to have bought 45s back in the '60s when I was a young pup; my first was The Beatles' "Rain"/"Paperback Writer." In the land of digital, I'm happy to download one song from some new noteworthy act and let it fall into my enormous random shuffle playlist (over 8,700 songs and counting). And that "single" is not always the band or label's choice; in the age of iTunes, we...

Chicago – One of the most influential sound artists in American rock history is Todd Rundgren. Known for radio friendly hits like “Hello It’s Me,” “I Saw the Light” and “Bang the Drum All Day,” Rundgren also is one of rock’s most notable producers, formulating hits for Meat Loaf, Grand Funk Railroad, the New York Dolls and Xtc.
Born near Philadelphia, he began his career in 1967 at the age of nineteen, forming the cult garage band Nazz. After leaving the band in 1969, he taught himself audio production and began a fruitful period of producing and creating name hit songs of the 1970s. His solo album “Something/Anything?” (1972) was a breakout hit record, and he also produced chart toppers like “We’re an American Band” (Grand Funk Railroad) and “Bat Out of Hell” (Meat Loaf). Some heavy, melodic metal thunder for your weekend... I caught this Canadian quartet Monster Truck last night at Piano's where they played songs from their new album Furiosity (Dine Alone Records). No frills classic rock and roll -- huge Les Paul guitar riffs, spacey organ fills, thunderous drums, bottom-heavy bass, and one powerful vocalist. The spirit of Stillwater and Grand Funk Railroad live! I predict these lads will be playing much larger venues very soon.

April is a banner month for Rob Zombie, who made two bloody splashes in one week: last week not only marked the theatrical release of his long-awaited feature film The Lords of Salem (check out our Salem interview with Rob here), but he also rolled out his fifth full-length solo album Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor, the first release on his own label Zodiac Swan. The follow-up to 2010's Hellbilly Deluxe 2 is a strong career move for Rob, who opted to dig deeper and tap into his late '90s roots in White Zombie, namely the legendary Astro-Creep 2000. HD2 was still a cool album in itself, and a solid sequel to Rob's career-defining solo debut, but the Z-man has wisely chosen to diversify his style while balancing his old and new musical strengths on this project. Zombie's signature sound has certainly not been overthrown for anything radically new here, but the...

For years, guitarist John 5 – formerly of Marilyn Manson's band (rejoining them temporarily for last year's Manson/Zombie “Twins of Evil” tour) and an acclaimed solo artist – has been an integral part of Rob Zombie's sound, having been Rob's official guitarist since 2005's Educated Horses. His talents are so intertwined with Rob's work that he was tapped to compose the original score for his much-anticipated film The Lords of Salem, which hits theaters April 19th. That very same week, you'll hear John's mighty axe swing again on Rob's next full-length studio album, Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor. John has stated that his first gig as composer was both challenging and rewarding: “It was like 10 times the intensity of writing a record,” he says. “It took months and months, as the timing is key to each scene. The music was very challenging and sometimes there was no key signature or time signature for this music,...

The first official photo from Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper movie Magic Mike starring, from left to right, Joe Manganiello, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, and Channing Tatum, shows the actors in what appears to be a patriotic group number. I love this shot for two reasons: It attempts to keep the mystery alive by only showing us McConaughey shirtless, and it gives us something to debate — which song are they stripping to? My first thought, because McConaughey’s get-up reminded me of Apollo Creed in Rocky IV, was James Brown’s “Living in America.” But that doesn’t feel sexy enough.

I will hand it to The Playboy Club. For the majority of this episode, I really did think Bruno Bianchi's murder was the subject of this week's complication. Alas, it was A Matter of Simple Duplicity and, somehow, this less-than-stellar show pulled the wool over my eyes. Or did it?
We know at least two Bunnies have fallen to the dark side, but they left it open as to who Nick really protected in the end, as his interest really lies in defending the Club.

1. Yellowjackets, World Cup Anthem "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan
This was a heckuva way to kick off the show. How uplifting. Great soloists and the key change was masterful. Excellent job. Some of the choreography was a little cheesy, but the story behind their performance was great. Shawn's critique that it was "powerful" was right on.

It's the Von Trapps of the 21st century! I am immediately struck by how well their voices blend, it's incredible. Youngest sib 14-uear-old Maria is the usual soloist, which is cool. She's very talented, but you can tell the backups are no slouches either. Another great performance.

Early this morning, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the once and future Fonz, Henry Winkler, has been made an honorary member of the Order of the British Empire. At first, we assumed the award was for the massive support he lent to both the leather jacket and pomade industries, but instead, he was honored for his educational work on dyslexia in the United Kingdom, which while nowhere near as awesome, is still extremely important.
All of this got us thinking though: If the Fonz got an OBE, what other surprising talents have been awarded the medal? So, after checking out a picture of the disconcertingly small Winkler with this award, thump the jukebox and check out these curious members of the "prestigious" Order of the British Empire.

Classic animated fantasy Heavy Metal got its high-definition debut back in January as a Best Buy exclusive, but on June 21, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings out the cult movie on Blu-ray through all retailers.
The 1981 film, which features the voices of John Candy (Planes, Trains and Automobiles), Eugene Levy (American Pie) and Harold Ramis (Stripes), is one of our favorite animated movies for adults — parents, this one is not for your kids. The science-fiction movie is an anthology of short films that tells about the battle between good and evil (personified by a glowing green orb from outer space that’s spreading destruction throughout the universe). Included in the segments are some sexy scenes involving a woman and a robot.

Early favorites Jacee Badeaux, Brett Loewenstern, Lauren Alaina survive, while other hopefuls went down in flames.

Group night on "American Idol" is notoriously brutal. It's full of attitude, fighting, ragged nerves and exhaustion. And that's just from the audience at home watching the ridiculous diva behavior onscreen.
But after pulling an all-nighter, a number of this year's picks to click, including teens Jacee Badeaux and Lauren Alaina, as well Chris Medina, James Durbin, Brett Loewenstern and Chelsee Oaks, survived to sing another day, while some early favorites went down in flames, unable to handle the pressure.
On Wednesday night's (February 16) show, producers figured they'd up the ante this year on the contestants by telling them, after they'd already formed their groups, that they must be comprised of a mix of singers...

Don't get us wrong. We love Homer Simpson.
We love jokes about beer and old hot dogs and Grand Funk Railroad as much as anyone. And yes, we understand that Homer's downtrodden but optimistic everyman is a classic character of the ages. We understand why he would be named the greatest character of TV and movies in the last 20 years by Entertainment Weekly.
"People can relate to Homer because we're all secretly propelled by desires we can't admit to," 'The Simpsons' creator Matt Groening told Entertainment Weekly. "Homer is launching himself head-first into every single impulsive thought that occurs to him. His love of whatever has caught his eye is a joy to witness.''
True, there is a joy to the laughter he brings us and the empathy we feel for him. But if we use Groening's criteria, then shouldn't Garfield have been the character of the '80s?...

Music fans will get the chance to rock out with Lemmy, Bret Michaels and former Kiss star Ace Frehley when the annual Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp becomes a reality TV show in 2010. The trio have joined ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, Lita Ford and Kip Winger as mentors for the VH1 Classic series, which will be taped at the end of February.
Hopefuls will be auditioned on TV and then mentored on forming bands and writing and recording music. The show will culminate in a battle of the bands at an unnamed Los Angeles rock venue.
Other stars involved in the TV camp include Grand Funk Railroad's Mark Farner, Traffic star Dave Mason and Foo Fighters rocker Rami Jaffee. The show will air in America in July.

Todd is God. Sure, Eric Clapton may have been God first, but growing up in New Jersey in the Seventies, I somehow decided to buy American when it came to guitar gods. And so I began to worship Todd Rundgren, the brilliantly talented singer-songwriter-guitarist-producer-arranger and part-time cult superstar who remains to this day a musical force with which to be reckoned. Todd Rundgren's wildly eclectic career is such that even his devoted fans may only know part of what the man has achieved over the years, from his days with the Nazz, to producing everyone from the New York Dolls to Grand Funk Railroad to Meatloaf to Patti Smith to Xtc, to blowing lots of progressive minds with the group Utopia, to foreseeing massive technological changes in the music business before just about anyone else. In his spare time, Todd has always...

Music tends to be pivotal in most coming-of-age stories, but one need only see such recent weak sauce as Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist to realize what a particular gift Mister John Hughes had with it. He even titled his films after songs: "Sixteen Candles" (by The Crests), "Pretty in Pink" (by The Psychedelic Furs, a song that Hughes stated directly inspired him to write the film), "Some Kind of Wonderful" (by Grand Funk Railroad). He wasn't afraid to use music by relative unknowns in his films and in a 1999 interview said, "I just used what I was listening...

'It's definitely more aggressive, but to me it feels like a celebration of rock and roll,' Gerard Way says.

Forget all that talk about ditching the shtick and focusing on fast-and-furious punk. My Chemical Romance have one sentiment they'd like to get across on their new album, one that echoes what Grand Funk Railroad said decades ago: "We're an American band."
"The punk element was something a lot of people talked about. I think once I said we were pulling out the marching bands, they assumed it was going to be a punk record," Gerard Way told MTV News last month at San Diego Comic-Con, where he was promoting "Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion," the third series of his Eisner-winning comic. "I mean, it's definitely more aggressive, but to me it feels...

Paul Shaffer doesn't want anybody to think he's a "perennial loser in all things sexual" -- so David Letterman's croaky-voiced bandleader is baring a wild night he had with a famed rock groupie once linked to Bill Clinton.
Connie Hamzy -- immortalized as "Sweet Connie" in the Grand Funk Railroad hit, "We're an American Band" -- "was more than a groupie. She was a specialist," Shaffer gushes in his memoir, "We'll Be Here for the Rest of Our Lives," out this October from Doubleday/Flying Dolphin.
