- John was put forward for a Bravery Award which he refused, Whilst on Tour as a Continental Coach Driver in Eshwega in East Germany, two of the passengers from the coach group wandered into a live Minefield that had not been cleared during preparations for dismantling of the Border Wall. Without hesitation John probed on his hands and knees for mines until he had cleared a path, he reached the two tourists, and brought them safely out of the danger area. The story was in most of the newspapers, He keeps one copy of the paper for a reminder of the time tourist never listened to the Safety Briefing on the Coach.
