Atop a lonely Latin American mountain, breaching the cloud’s barrier of visibility, eight teenage commandos do their part in an operation neither we nor they fully understand. Their ties to an entity called “The Organization” are, at the start of Monos, unbreakable and unquestioning; living in a feral state, they eagerly await orders from a horse-riding and harsh superior, who’s stripped them of their domestic identities and molded them into obedient machines, cultic militants. But by the end of Columbian filmmaker Alejandro Landes’ gorgeous third feature, the fabric of both their compliance and comradery will be unraveled in a 140-minute dissertation of unnerving, yet valid humanity.
The task at hand is simple, the “Messenger” (Wilson Salazar) informs his platoon: protect the cow and protect the girl. The cow, named Shakira, provides nutrient-rich milk for the near-savage warriors, and the girl (Julianne Nicholson), only referred to as “doctora,” is an American hostage.

On the chilly, fog-soaked mountains of an unnamed region in Latin America, a group of child soldiers keeps watch over two captives: a solemn-faced engineer (Julianne Nicholson) and a borrowed cow named Shakira. There is some loose order imposed on the garbage bag-wearing guerilla soldiers by a short but fearsome commander from The Organization, an unknown paramilitary group with vague ideals and no stated purpose other than to fight their enemies.
The kids go by nicknames, like Bigfoot (Moises Arias), Lady (Karen Quintero), Wolf (Julian Giraldo), Rambo (Sofia Buenaventura) and Swede (Laura Castrillón). Their human captive is known only as Doctor for most of the movie. We don’t know much else as Alejandro Landes plunges us into the dark world of “Monos.”

“Monos” takes place in the dense jungles and foggy mountaintops of northern Colombia, but it may as well be another planet. Director Alejandro Landes’ thrilling survivalist saga tracks a dysfunctional group of young militants as they traipse through perilous terrain, engaging in savage behavior while toying with their mortified American hostage (Julianne Nicholson), but they never reveal their motivations. Equal parts “Lord of the Flies” and “Aguirre, the Wrath of God,” Landes’ third feature distills guerrilla warfare into sheer anarchy.
By stripping away the sociopolitical context, “Monos” provides a window into power-hungry mayhem on the fringes of society that could happen anytime, anywhere — but depicts its hectic showdowns with a you-are-there intensity that could only take place in the present. Aided by “Under the Skin” composer Micah Levi’s thunderous score, Landes delivers a suspenseful encapsulation of alienated youth enmeshed in pointless battles that can only lead to further destruction.

Anyone doubting the effectiveness of Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund need only look at the make-up of next month’s Berlinale competition.
There are no fewer than three Hbf-backed features in the hunt for this year’s Golden Bear: Lav Diaz’s A Lullaby To The Sorrowful Mission, Cross Current by Yang Chao and Inhebbek Hedi (Hedi) by Mohamed Ben Attia
Hbf provides grants to filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe. The Fund, established in 1989, takes its name from the Festival’s founder, Hubert Bals, and has long been recognised as an integral part of what Iffr offers.
A total of 13 titles in Rotterdam’s programme were made with Hbf support. That, suggests Iwana Chronis, Manager Hbf, is “about average”.

Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.

For the first time in the channel’s history, Sundance Channel is officially setting up an on-site headquarters – located at 692 Main Street – which will play host to an all-access, multimedia experience for Sundance Film Festival patrons.
“All eyes are on the Sundance Film Festival every year, and no wonder: it’s a one-of-kind event on the film calendar, a place to get early indications of what’s next in our culture. We’re proud to share the Sundance name and it’s only fitting that we create an exciting media event on all of our...

[Editor's note: If anyone says 2010 was a sh!% year for movies, please refer them to this post.]
Instead of the usual "best" or "worst" films of the year lists, I thought a good way to take a look at the highs and lows of the 2010 film year would be to compile almost every single review we published in 2010 and let readers meander through the wasteland as it were.
I'm really amazed at the range of films we managed to cover from around the globe this year. Quiet Earth has certainly come a long way over the years and it's really due to the talents and passion of our team of writers who literally travel a world of fests to bring news and reviews of new films.
I hope you're all taking notes. Many of these films were from fests and will probably be hitting VOD and Blu-ray sometime in the new year, so this is a good chance to get a start on your must-watch lists.

Want to fund Harmony Korine's next movie? He's the newest participant in the International Film Festival Rotterdam's Cinema Reloaded program, joining "Unmade Beds" director Alexis Dos Santos and "At the End of Daybreak"'s Ho Yuhang. All three filmmakers are soliciting online donations for their new films through the website, while also contributing text and video blog updates -- their projects will premiere at the festival in January.
In his video introduction, Korine confesses to having been "eating a lot of cake," and promises that his film, "God's Joke," will have "a lot of messed-up stuff" and that "we're going to be doing some serious damage."
The summary for the project may be more helpful toward making the decision whether or not to contribute your minimum five euro donation:
This is a movie about a person who is born with one of the most unattractive faces in the universe...

Before going into my Women Directors Tracking which I have vowed to continue until women reach a parity with men in the film business and Latino Directors groove, I want to thank Howard Feinstein for watching the most obscure films of Rotterdam to find the jewels! Scratching Below the Surface for Some Rotterdam Fest Gems - indieWIRE. Kudos! I wish I could have seen these!
Howard spotted this one: "A young woman named Rusudan Pirveli brought to the 'Bright Future' section Susa, another story of hard financial times. 'The Lost Generation' is represented here by the absent father of an adolescent boy, who, working for his mother, sells bootleg vodka in bottles. Sadly, he lives under the delusion that dad’s return would ease his and his mom’s hardship. Movies shot on digital still cameras, mobile phones used as projectors – Rotterdam's forward-looking film festival offered intriguing glimpses of the future of movie-making
There have been times when this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) has felt like glimpsing a blueprint for the future – or at least some provisional early sketches. The festival has offered ideas, experiments and proofs of how the digital cinema world might look, from pre-production to shooting to exhibition, as well as some playful reminders of past times when the movie industry has faced challenge and change.
Cinema Reloaded, an experiment in raising production funds through crowd-sourcing, has been the festival's flagship online programme this year. The aim was to raise 30,000 euros for one of three proposed short films through virtual donations – an intriguing if somewhat gimmicky notion that does not seem to have caught fire in practice: at the time of writing, even the most popular project,...

The panel on the first day of the Rotterdam Lab was led by Michael Gubbins, former editor of Screen International, who is now associated with Power to the Pixel, the UK-based cross-media initiative supporting content creators and distributors who are interested in finding alternate means particularly, I think, of content finance and distribution. If you need more context, think Ted Hope and Lance Weiler, both of whom have more than passing associations with the organzation. And if you must, think Thomas Woodrow too, because as of that panel, I'm mighty interested in what they're doing also. In the photo, you'll see (L to R): Michael Gubbins and filmmakers Ho Yuhang, Alexis dos Santos and yes, by total coincidence, Pippilotti Rist. So on...

Rating: 7.5 out of 10
Not to be confused with Nicholas Barker’s 1997 film with which it shares its title, Alexis Dos Santos’ Unmade Beds is a modern story of romance and self discovery.
Axl has a bad habit of drinking too much and waking up in strange beds which he, more often than not, shares with even stranger individuals. He’s landed in London and is searching out his English father, a man he’s never met. Vera is a girl in search of companionship, something with no strings attached. The two have ended up sharing a London warehouse with a group of other individuals but their paths have never crossed but they will, you’re sure of it.
Santo’s film is an interesting beast overcrowded with colourful characters who weave...

Wedged between Sundance and Berlin is the extremely important Rotterdam film festival. Rotterdam functions as Europe's first major film fest of the year, but it seconds as a premiere destination for filmmakers such as Andrei Zvyagintsev (The Return), Amat Escalante (Sangre) and Juraj Lehotsky (Blind Loves) who make the kind of films that need a "helping hand". This list is of obvious interest because we'll be talking about this projects-turned-into-films down the road - we only need to look at Venice/Tiff for recent examples such as Samuel Maoz's Lebanon and Shirin Neshat's Women without Men to see the quality of films that got their start here. - Wedged between Sundance and Berlin is the extremely important Rotterdam film festival. Canada's most avant-garde film festival have released their entire slate for their 38th edition. Apart from Lee Daniel's pegged for Oscar - Precious, Lone Scherfig's An Education, Lars von Trier's Antichrist and Pedro Almodóvar's Broken Embraces (Los abrasos rotos), this year's edition is filled to the gills with obscure titles and names that even a hardcore connoisseur of world cinema such as myself is unfamiliar with. - I've just completed an exhaustive 35 film slate at Tiff and I've got very little time to recharge the batteries for The Festival du nouveau cinéma. Rating: 5 out of 10
Beautifully shot and delightfully acted, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Airdoll plays like a love-song to the splendor and bitterness of life, filled with allegory in each verse. It’s too bad though, that Kore-eda’s renowned soft touch and pop aesthetics are a bit too blunt around the edges, to go anywhere further than skin-deep at the vast number issues he tries to juggle.
Staying close to his explorations of jaded forms of love and loss, Kore-eda (two time Cannes contender with Distance (2001) and Nobody Knows (2004)) takes a 20 page short manga (The Pneumatic Figure of a Girl, pub. 2000 by Youshiide Gouda), and makes a full blown two-hour movie out of its story about a blow-up sex doll that offers more than sexual pleasure to her lonesome owner, who spends hours joyfully yapping about...

Argentinian director Alexis Dos Santos's film both drifts and engages you – a trick difficult to pull off
The Argentinian director Alexis Dos Santos has devised a film that, to my mind, pulls off one of the most difficult tricks imaginable: it creates a drifting, ambling, no-particular-place-to-go feel, a meandering quality that I found engaging. Axl, played by Fernando Tielve, is a 20-year-old Spanish guy who is in London looking for an English father who vanished when he was just a baby. Déborah François is Vera, a young Belgian woman who is pursuing a failed romance. Axl and Vera live in a transient worlds of squats and hostels; they are intensely young, displaying a gloriously insouciant indifference to, and even unawareness of, the future – a condition intensified by an uncertain grip on the present and the past. Axl loves to get wasted in the evenings, and the next morning can...
