Seven horror screenwriters share their tips on how to write a really scary movie
It’s easy to write a horror movie, isn’t it? Pack up a couple of kids, send them off somewhere isolated, and have a monster chase them through the woods. Throw in some loud bangs on the soundtrack and you’re sorted. Right?
Wrong. Well, okay, not wrong if you want to write a basic, generic, forgettable kind of horror movie. But if you want to do something better than that, things get a bit more complicated. You need a proper story; characters worth investing in; a carefully constructed atmosphere of dread punctuated by the kind of scares that make your audience hide behind their hands. And that’s not easy.
To get the lowdown on what works and what doesn’t, I interviewed some working horror writers. Here are their tips:...

Modern romance in Nina Forever
True love never dies, so they say, and this is something that has charmed romantics and worried horror writers for hundreds of years. It doesn’t deter Holly (Abigail Hardingham), who really fancies Rob (Cian Barry) and figures she can handle the fact that he’s recently bereaved. But dead girlfriend Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy) still wants him for herself and isn’t about to give up easily.
An incisive look at some of the less talked-about aspects of human sexuality, Nina Forever is the first full length feature made for a cinema audience by brothers Chris and Ben Blaine, and it has won them well deserved attention. Fresh off the festival circuit, they agreed to talk to us about the film, enthusiastic about a review they said have given them a real boost early on. They were just glad, Chris tells me, that “somebody got it.

They say true love lasts forever, but what about when the person you love is dead..?After Rob’s (Cian Barry) girlfriend Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy) dies in a car crash he attempts suicide, which he fails at. The problem is, whenever they try to have sex, Nina is brought back to sarcastically torment their attempts to have a normal relationship.

Greek helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ purest and painful reminder that love reigns is measuring off against Justin Kurzel’s paranoia bliss and Andrew Haigh’s in it for the long term portrait received the most nominations for the upcoming 2015 British Independent Film Awards. Mysteriously, Rachel Weisz failed to nab a nom in the Best Actress category, but The Lobster has a wide-spread reach in all major categories with seven nominations. 45 Years, the favorite in both acting categories and Macbeth are one shy with six noms apiece. Apart from the Best Picture category, we’re keeping tabs for a surprise win in the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Actor race should be a hoot as both Gleesons in Brendan and Domhnall will be competing against each other. The award show technically kicks off award season on December 6th.

While we’ll be hearing about the Oscar race ad nauseam for the next many months, there are a few awards ceremony that actually highlight films that might slip under the radar. Like the recently unveiled Gotham award nominations, the British Independent Film Awards do a splendid job of taking a look at some of the year’s overlooked films, and today brings their nominations.
Topping the list is Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Lobster (which we quite liked at Cannes, and will be released next spring in the U.S.), earning seven nominations, including Best Film and Director. Also in the same major categories, but earning six overall, were 45 Years and Macbeth, which we also praised, and will arrive in the U.S next month. Notably, the documentary Amy snuck into the Best Film category, proving just how much a hit it was in the U.K. as well.

Nina Forever
Written and directed by Ben Blaine and Chris Blaine
UK, 2015
The Marquis de Sade wrote, “There is no better way to know death than to link it with some licentious image”. Georges Bataille latched onto this idea, arguing that without death there is no desire. Factors of procreation and beauty play a role in sex, but true desire is rooted in our mortality: we want to fuck because we know we will die. The link between death and desire is at the heart of the Blaine brothers’ debut feature, Nina Forever. After the death of his girlfriend and a failed suicide attempt, Rob (Cian Barry) starts a relationship with his young co-worker, Holly (Abigail Hardingham). But every time they have sex his dead girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), appears mangled and bloodied in their bed.
At the heart of absurdity is fear. Great horror is often intensely absurd,...

Acclaimed out of SXSW, the beautiful and very twisted horror romance Nina Forever has a full trailer to writhe around with. From directors Ben Blaine & Chris Blaine, Nina Forever is an utterly macabre, and very darkly funny affair about a blooming romance and the very dead girlfriend that comes between. In the film, Rob (Cian Barry)…

Epic Pictures Group is handling worldwide rights at Cannes for SXSW horror smash "Nina Forever," directors Chris and Ben Blaine's atmospheric tale of a dead ex-girlfriend who returns to the land of the living to haunt a young man and sabotage his new relationship. "The Blaine brothers’ atmospheric feature offers a sometimes extreme depiction of romantic fixation," wrote THR at SXSW, "deliberately skirting the more outrageous conventions of horror comedy with a stab at a more nuanced appreciation for the sometimes obsessive morbidity of ill-fated love." The film stars Fiona O’Shaughnessy and Abigail Hardingham. The Playlist called the film "fresh, original and surprisingly tender." "Nina Forever" joins Epic Pictures' buzzy genre lineup at the Cannes market, alongside Norwegian horror tale "Villmark Asylum," anthology film "Tales of Halloween" and Israeli horror feature "Jeruzalem." With writer/director David Robert Mitchell's Cannes-premiered "It Follows" bringing in over $16 million at the domestic box office on a slim $2 million budget, the theatrical market seems ripe for another arty horror movie hit to arise. So which of this year's festival favorites could follow (no pun intended) in "It Follows'" footsteps? With the close of the 3rd annual Stanley Film Festival on Sunday, below I've pegged six buzzed-about horror titles from this year's three major festivals so far (Sundance, SXSW and Stanley) that could become the next unlikely breakout in theaters. "The Witch" Director: Robert Eggers Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie Synopsis: New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. The pull of love and the desire for connection can sometimes blind us to bad decisions, and in "Nina Forever," that's taken to some rather provocative extremes. Today we have an exclusive clip from the movie that mixes horror, comedy, and romance into one unique blend. Directed by Chris and Ben Blaine, and starring Abigail Hardingham, Cian Barry, Fiona O'Shaughnessy, Elizabeth Elvin, and David Troughton, the story follows Holly, who has fallen for the damaged Rob. The problem? He still obsesses over his dead girlfriend Nina. While a romance blossoms between Holly and Rob, when she first sleeps with him, she discovers she also has to share the bed with the dead Nina, bloody limbs and all. In this scene from the film, you get an understanding of what compels Holly to try and make things work. "Nina Forever" has its World Premiere tonight at SXSW. Watch below. Browse through...

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.
