Paramount kicked off its CinemaCon presentation in rocking fashion this morning with dancers taking the stage to Elton John’s boppy “I’m Still Standing” and setting up a preview of John biopic/musical fantasy Rocketman. An extended look at the film, directed by Dexter Fletcher and starring Taron Egerton — who uses his own pipes for the many musical numbers — then followed.
This footage was different from what recently was shown to press in Los Angeles. It started with John (née Reginald Dwight) as a startling piano prodigy kid who enters the Academy of Music but wants to rock rather than playing “dead people’s music.” We learn how Reggie changed his name and ultimately played his first U.S. concert at the Troubadour in 1970 — with Neil Diamond and half of the Beach Boys in the audience.
Fletcher, who stepped in to finish the mega-musical blockbuster Bohemian Rhapsody, does not skimp on the tunes.

Elton John and his Rocket Pictures are looking to produce an animated big screen adaptation of the classic musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. They've already acquired the rights to the musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.
Producer Steve Hamilton Shaw had this to say in a statement,

I was never a big fan of this musical, but if done properly I can see it being a very successful animated movie. After all, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the most performed musical in history, and almost everyone is familiar with it.

A few months ago word got out that Tom Hardy was looking at playing Elton John in a biopic called Rocketman. That casting choice has now been set in stone by an official announcement. It's still hard for me to imagine Hardy in this role. He's such a great actor, though, that I'm sure he's going to be fantastic in the movie.
The movie has been described as, "a biographical musical fantasy that will weave together John’s life and his music... it follows his life story from a child piano prodigy (who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music) to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era."
This is going to be very different from anything we've seen Hardy do before.

Exclusive: FilmDistrict is nearing a deal to acquire U.S. rights to Rocketman, the Michael Gracey-directed biographical musical film about Sir Elton John. The script is by Billy Elliot‘s Lee Hall, and Tom Hardy is circling to play the lead role. This film was the talk of Cannes, where it was shopped by UTA, which structured the financing. It was there that UK-based Icon’s production arm AI Film agreed to come aboard to co-finance the film with Rocket Pictures during the Cannes Film Festival. I’m told that FilmDistrict is betting big here, with Peter Schlessel’s distribution company paying around a $10 million minimum guarantee for a guaranteed wide theatrical release and size-able P&A. There is also a generous gross corridor after the film recoups. The film follows John’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music,...

By Erin Whitney It's difficult to imagine the muscle-bulging, Bane-masked Tom Hardy wailing "Tiny Dancer" on the piano while adorned with feathers and sequins. However, according to HitFix Hardy is being considered to portray Sir Elton John in the musical fantasy biopic "Rocketman." Currently in development with first-time director Michael Gracey and "Billy Elliot" screenwriter Lee Hall, HitFix reports that music figures Bernie Taupin and John Reid have also been tied to “Rocketman” for supporting roles. The film has been described by Steve Hamilton Shaw of John's Rocket Pictures as "a radically different type of biopic." If "radically different" means a completely unexpected, hyper-masculine lead, then we're in for a whole new Elton experience. Yet, we've already heard a bit of Hardy's singing and even rapping in online videos, so maybe he won't be such a bad fit. [via HitFix h/t Vulture]...

In what could be the most unexpected, left-field but totally awesome casting decisions made this year, Tom Hardy is reportedly being lined up to play Elton John in the musical biopic Rocketman.
In development for several years and described as a “biographical musical fantasy”, the drama would celebrate the life and music of the charismatic and legendary performer and also explore John’s relationship with lyricist Bernie Taupin. Hitfix reports that Michael Gracey (a first time director who also is attached to a biopic of P.T. Barnum, “The Greatest Showman On Earth”, which Hugh Jackman would lead) and Executive Producer Elton John are seriously considering Hardy for the lead role.
For Hardy, playing Elton John would be a million miles away from the alpha male characters of Bane, Bronson, Tommy Conlon (his Mma fighter from Warrior) he has portrayed recently, and of course Mad Max, the reboot which he has out next year.

The Sir Elton John biopic, Rocketman, has been in the works for a few years now. A director has been found in Michael Gracey, but the project has yet to be able to nail down its leading man. That may be changing soon though as the producers are now considering Tom Hardy for the role.
No formal offer of any kind has been made, but it’s still worth considering the possibility of Hardy leading the film. Of The Dark Knight Rises and Warrior fame, Hardy has shown time and time again that he’s one of the most versatile leading men in Hollywood. Taking on the role of John would only further show his range, if he can pull it off that is.
The main question most will have is whether Hardy can not only sing, but sing well enough to portray one of the greatest vocalists of all time.

The sequel to last year’s hit animated comedy Gnomeo and Juliet is heading into development with Elton John composing the soundtrack once again.
According to Deadline, the sequel will this time pit the ceramic ornaments against Baker Street’s famous detective Sherlock Holmes in a follow-up titled Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes.
The official synopsis reads, “when gnomes start disappearing from the suburban gardens of England, Gnomeo, Juliet and friends enlist the help of Sherlock Gnomes, “the greatest ornamental detective,” to track the culprit.
“Unfortunately, Sherlock is neither as brilliant nor as insightful as his human counterpart, and as the crimes against gnomanity continue, the threat to their world becomes bigger than they ever imagined.”
