Way back in 2011, Sony Pictures acquired a spec script titled The Big Stone Grid, which was written by S. Craig Zahler – who is best known these days for writing and directing the films Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete. As of early 2012, Michael Mann was in talks to work on script revisions with Zahler and to direct the film. The Mann take on the material didn’t come to fruition, and four years later the project moved over to Lotus Entertainment, with Pierre Morel on board to direct. Morel couldn’t get it into production, either. Eight more years down the line, World of Reel reports that Zahler is now set to direct the film himself.
Part of the reason why Zahler has gone six years without directing a new film is the fact that the project he was pursuing, Hug Chickenpenny (an adaptation of...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by IFC Midnight. Director: Alexandre Courtès. Writers: S. Craig Zahler, and Jérôme Fansten. Cast: Anna Skellern, Rupert Evans and Dave Legeno. The Asylum Blackout creates the right atmosphere for a horror feature. There are dark halls, mutilated corpses and the criminally insane hiding out in every dark corridor. The environment is chilling; yet, something is missing. The writing follows a linear structure with few deviations. This is director Alexandre Courtes' first feature with writer Craig Zahler also creating his first script here. So, understandably, the writing is cautious. The contradiction between the thrilling settings with the straight forward approach to writing still creates for an entertaining time. The plot structure is fairly simple. Three friends and bandmates work at the local Sans Mental Institution in Washington, State. Here, they feed the crazed and hungry. Then, the crazed feed on the.

Jean Dujardin/The Players: World Trade Center Joke Cut. [Photo: Marion Cotillard.] Also, in his piece Berretta mentions Marion Cotillard, who angered some after telling Paris Première that she questioned the official story about the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Some publicity-hungry Christian pastor may have demanded that the Academy take back Cotillard's Best Actress Academy Award for La Vie en Rose, but the actress not only has kept her Oscar statuette but continues to be cast in major Hollywood films, e.g., Rob Marshall's Nine, Steven Soderbergh's Contagion, Christopher Nolan's Inception and the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. As per The Hollywood Reporter, which recently reviewed The Players, the latest Jean Dujardin comedy "is only as sustainable as its outlandish premise, and it eventually plays out like only an above-average addition to French cinema's long-standing fling with unfaithfulness." The Players' directors are Dujardin, Gilles Lellouche, Emmanuelle Bercot, Fred Cavayé, Alexandre Courtes,...

hollywoodnews.com: So far, suave Jean Dujardin has cruised through the awards race on behalf of his charming, silent turn in Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Artist.” But back home in France, the actor is bumping into a minor controversy surrounding an upcoming movie he has made with his “Artist” collaborator.
The poster for “The Players,” which stars Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche, feature the two performers in “compromising positions that many argue are degrading for women,” THR reports.
“The Players” is an anthology work from a series of directors, including Dujardin, Lellouche, Fred Cavaye, Eric Lartigau, Emmanuelle Bercot, Alexandre Courtes and Hazanavicius. Each entry focuses on the theme of male infidelity, and the taglines on the already provocative posters only hammers home the lewd sentiment.

Director Michel Hazanavicius has already followed up "The Artist" by directing a short film for "The Players" (aka "Les Indideles"), a French short film omnibus about infidelity, due to be released in France next month, which also boasts directors Emmanuelle Bercot, Fred Cavaye, Alexandre Courtes, Eric Lartigau, "The Artist"'s Jean Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche (the latter two also appear in the film). We've been talking about The Incident (review here) for quite some time here at DC, and we're happy to announce that the good folks over at IFC have finally firmed up a release date. Read on.
Look for the flick in limited theatres on May 4th, 2012 with a VOD presumably taking place about a month before. Alexandre Courtes' The Incident stars Rupert Evans, Kenny Doughty, Unax Ugalde, Dave Legeno, Anna Skellern, Richard Brake, Eric Godon, Joseph Kennedy, and Marcus Garvey.
Synopsis
George, Max, and Ricky are in a rock band and waiting for their big breakthrough. Between small gigs and rehearsals they work in the kitchen of a high-security asylum for good pay at minimum risk — they have no physical contact with the inmates. Two Teasers Arrive for French Anthology Film Featuring ‘Players’ From ‘The Artist’ and ‘Point Blank’
Jean Dujardin and Michel Hazanavicius have accumulated heaps of awards buzz this year for The Artist, and whatever they do next is bound to receive a good modicum of attention. However, they’re both taking a mutual directing detour with The Players, an anthology film from their native land of France.
Two teasers have arrived for the project, which is said to focus on “the glories and pitiful disasters of male infidelity in all its desperate, absurd and wildly funny variety.” Fred Cavayé and Gilles Lellouche, respective director and star of this year’s Point Blank, are also lending segments, as are Emmanuelle Bercot, Alexandre Courtes, Jan Kounen, and Eric Lartigau. Among several others, Dujardin, Guillaume Canet, Mathilda May, and Sandrine Kiberlain will be in front of the camera. These teasers sadly derived of the necessary subtitles, but you can pretty much figure out — and then laugh — at what’s going on here.

Mention October to some and revolution and Eisenstein will spring to mind. To others, it'll be the journal of art criticism and theory (whose latest issue, as it happens, concentrates on film and video). But for many more, it'll be "the arrival of coolth and crispidy after months oppressive heat and intrusive sunshine… the downward spiral of maple leaves from the tree tops, the wind in the willows, the shadow over Innsmouth, the silence of the lambs, the howling in the woods, I love every damned thing about this glorious but all-too-short season!" exclaims Richard Harland Smith at Movie Morlocks. And of course, what he especially loves are "all the shades of Halloween, from the ticky-tack gee-gaws on the shelves at Cvs and Rite Aid to the widespread enjoyment of classical music (Camille Saint-Saëns's Danse Macabre, Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue), literature (Henry James's The Turn of the Screw,...

The last weekend of Tiff 2011 is upon us. For many, the festival ended when the celebrity circus packed up and left town, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of great films playing between now and Sunday. Here is a list of ten films (in no particular order) that might have escaped you during the festival proper that are getting encore screenings this weekend – eight of which I have seen, one that I have only seen parts of, and one that I feel the need to mention despite not yet having the opportunity to see it.
Like Crazy, dir. Drake Doremus
I will happily shout from the heavens to anyone that’s listening that Like Crazy is one of my favourite films of all time. This story of two university graduates (Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones) trying their hardest to make a long distance relationship work is...

We usually leave the business reporting to other outlets, but yesterday saw such a remarkable string of acquisitions, I can't help but take note. For starters, Palisades Tartan has picked up Us and UK rights to This Is Not a Film (review; roundup), co-directed by Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb. Panahi, of course, remains under house arrest and Mirtahmasb was detained from leaving Iran over a week ago — and I haven't seen any updates on his status.
IFC Films has gone on a shopping spree in Toronto and, within hours, has secured North American rights to Alexandre Courtes's horror film The Incident (there'll be a Midnight Madness roundup soon enough), Lynn Shelton's Your Sister's Sister (roundup's on the way) and Abel Ferrara's 4:44 Last Day on Earth, which few critics besides Danny Kasman seem to have caught in Venice (nonetheless, that roundup is in the works as well). Fortunately,...

There's nothing finer than hearing that a horror film affected folks so strongly that they fainted. It never ceases to amaze and amuse us, and that's just the case concerning the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of The Incident (review here).
According to Deadline the Alexandre Courtes-directed flick that screened this morning in the Midnight Madness category is clearly not for the squeamish. Apparently two moviegoers fainted during the flick and an ambulance was called. One person fainted when one of the characters was tied to a stove top and burned alive. No word on the other.

Rupert Evans, Kenny Doughty, Unax Ugalde, Dave Legeno, Anna Skellern, Richard Brake, Eric Godon, Joseph Kennedy, and Marcus Garvey star. Look for more on this one soon!

You’d think film festival audiences have seen everything, but every so often a report comes down following a genre-film screening that the shocking sights in a particular movie were just too much for certain viewers. The latest happened last night at the Toronto International Film Festival, during a showing of Alexandre Courtes’ The Incident—which despite (or perhaps because of) that reaction, has been picked up for U.S. distribution.

Exclusive: I’m told that IFC Midnight is finalizing a U.S. distribution rights deal for The Incident, the horror title that created a stir when a couple of audience members responded to the hardcore scenes by fainting. IFC Midnight negotiated the deal with Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group. Snd is selling foreign. Earlier, 10:25 Am: The Incident, the Alexandre Courtes-directed drama that screened this morning in the Midnight Madness category, is clearly not for the squeamish. I’m told that two moviegoers fainted and an ambulance was called. The movie is about three struggling musicians who moonlight as cooks in a high security insane asylum. When a storm shuts down the security system, the cells are unlocked and dangerous inmates run wild. Apparently, one person fainted when one of the cooks was tied to a stove top and burned alive. That will get you every time. Paradigm is trying to sell domestic.

News is rolling out of Toronto for this year's festival, with the Galas and the Special Presentations sections announced. As always with Tiff, the sheer number of films can seem overwhelming, but with new films by David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method, pictured above), Terence Davies (!), Francis Ford Coppola, Wang Xiaoshuai, Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud, and William Friedkin added to big names that premiered already this year (including Almodóvar, Von Trier, Nanni Moretti, and Nicolas Winding Refn) it looks like the 2011 iteration will be as packed with must-see cinema as ever before. We'll be updating this listing as new lineups are announced. See Tiff's official website for details.

Big news coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival today. The lineup for the documentary slate was announced earlier and now the Midnight Madness programme has also been announced. The entire list of genre films playing are listed below and personally I think this is the most exciting in the program’s history. These 10 films close each day of the festival to thousands of hardcore fans who flock out to the Ryerson Theatre each night.
“Ravenous cinephiles will devour the roster of chillers, action thrillers and pitch-black comedies that fill this year’s slate,” said Tiff Programmer Colin Geddes in a press release. “Martial arts assassins, cops and robbers, escaped lunatics and vampire ballerinas will take over Ryerson Theatre every night at midnight, and deliver the shocking and rocking experience that our loyal audience flocks to take part in, helping make these screenings so memorable.”

Photo: Content Media The 2011 Toronto International Film Festival announced 56 more movies added to its festival line-up this year with selections in the Vanguard, Midnight Madness, Documentaries, City to City and Tiff Kids programs. And to be honest, the line-up is filled with titles, most of which are absolutely new to me.
I have seen one of the films under the Vanguard banner, a selection of young and cutting edge features and I've heard of Joachim Trier's Oslo, August 31, Ben Wheatley's Kill List (watch the trailer to the right) was a hit at South by Southwest earlier this year and the documentary selections include familiar names such as Werner Herzog, Morgan Spurlock, Jonathan Demme, Alex Gibney and Wim Wenders, the latter of which is delivering a 3D documentary centered on the dance world of Pina Bausch and her company.

Way back in 2007 we reported on a flick called Incident at Sans Asylum. Time passed. Years went by. There was not a single solitary update to give. We assumed that the project went the way of the Dodo bird, but apparently it's been made ... and sold at Cannes.
That's right, kids. The film from French director Alexandre Courtes, now known simply as The Incident, starring Rupert Evans (Hellboy), Kenny Doughty and Unax Ugalde, scored international distribution. According to Variety the Gallic distribution and international sales arm of France's M6 broadcast network group has licensed key territories on the English-language thriller.
Koch Media in Germany and Showbox in U.K. have acquired the film, a Snd-M6 co-production with Los Angeles-based producer Roy Lee. The Incident has also sold to Portugal (Lusomundo) and the Middle East (Gulf). Further territories -- Brazil, Mexico -- will close before market end, Snd-M6 said.

A film that went under all of our radars is The Incident, which was originally announced as Incident at Sans Asylum. The pic quietly went into production with French director Alexandre Courtes at the helm and Rupert Evans, Kenny Doughty and Unax Ugalde all starring. Courtes' directorial debut "turns on three rock band members who work in a high-security asylum -- until a freak storm blows the asylum's security system, unleashing its criminal patients and trapping the rockers." Courtes is a graphic designer and musicvid director with Daft Punk, U2 and Kasabian. Being sold out of Cannes, the sales agent told Variety last month that they're "aiming for an upscale, distinctive genre movie, like 'The Descent' or 'Rec.' " It is now in post-production.

Waaaaay back in 2007, we dropped a mention of a film called Incident at Sans Asylum . At the time, Spanish director Daniel Calparsoro was going to sit at the helm for Ghost House Pictures. In a buried Variety article, it appears the film has been shot under the title The Incident and French music video director Alexandre Courtes took over the project. Roy Lee is producing. The film still tells of "three rock band members who work in a high-security asylum - until a freak storm blows the asylum's security system, unleashing its criminal patients and trapping the rockers." Rupert Evans, Dave Legeno, Richard Brake, Kenny Doughty and Anna Skellern star. Production began in January and the film was recently being sold to potential buyers at the Cannes film market.
