Even from a continent's distance, the American Film Market, which began on Wednesday and continues until next Friday, tends to make me aware of a number of films that I previously had no idea were even at the germination stage, much less wrapped and ready to go. One such film is "Mojave," the second directorial effort from William Monahan, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of "The Departed." Monahan's first venture behind the camera was a considerable disappointment. Based on a whip-smart novel by Ken Bruen and boasting a starry cast led by Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley, "London Boulevard" had the makings of...

Writer, now director, William Monahan crafts a unique brand of hard-boiled men. The Departed and Kingdom of Heaven screenwriter never follows a guy who’s gonna throw-down and flex at any chance he gets. His protagonists are flawed, paradoxical, and in London Boulevard, even kind of feminine. Monahan’s adaptation of Ken Bruen’s novel features a sensitive lead with no interest in being a gangster, an antagonist who’s more interested in kissing the Farrell character than killing him, and every other so-called mobster in this film could not be more incompetent. Unlike The Departed, Monahan has written an anti-gangster picture. The writer and his works are contrarian — his scripts generally go against conventions, and he speaks in a fairly candid manner. Here’s what writer-director William Monahan had to say about vulnerable, sexily flawed women, what makes for bad exposition, and why the last shot of The Departed still works, even...

Title: London Boulevard Director: William Monahan Starring: Colin Farrell, Keira Knightley and Ray Winstone (‘The Departed,’ ‘Beowulf’) The contrasting lifestyles of South London’s criminal underground and the West London celebrity world are two existences that don’t often cross paths in literature and on-screen. But author Ken Bruen interestingly combined the two lifestyles in his noir crime novel ‘London Boulevard,’ which was effortlessly translated to the screen by first-time director William Monahan. The filmmaker, who is most remembered for winning an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2007 for the gangster film ‘The Departed,’ brought his knowledge of the conflicting methods of gangsters to the screen adaptation of ‘London Boulevard.’...

Not only was Martin Scorsese's The Departed a box office hit, but it also won 4 Oscars in 2007 including the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. It was only the third script that William Monahan had written, but it definitely took his career to new heights, leading very quickly to more projects and even his first chance to direct. His directorial debut, London Boulevard, was adapted from the novel of the same name by Irish writer Ken Bruen and hit theatres in the U.K. last November. Next month IFC Films will finally release the movie here in North America. The story revolves around an ex-con named Mitchel (played by Colin Farrell) who is doing his best to go straight after being released from jail. He takes a job as a bodyguard for a Hollywood actress (Keira Knightley), but when a crime boss named Gant (Ray Winstone) comes calling, he finds...

William Monahan is no stranger to the world of gangsters. After all, he did write The Departed, which not only won Martin Scorsese his first Best Director Oscar and took home Best Picture, but earned the writer the Best Adapted Screenplay award. But now he's trading the mean streets of Boston for the soggy streets of London. Monahan's directorial debut, London Boulevard, has been waiting for its American debut for a while now (it was released in November 2010 in the UK) but with its November 11th limited release date coming up, a new trailer for the movie has arrived. Check it out below or in HD over on Yahoo! William Monahan, screenwriter of Kingdom of Heaven and Oscar-winning writer of The Departed, directed his first film back in 2009. London Boulevard opened quietly in the UK last year and is opening even more quietly in the States this fall. The movie is an adaptation of a novel by Ken Bruen (who also wrote the books on which The Guard and Blitz were based) and stars Colin Farrell, Keira Knightley and Ray Winstone in a London-based gangster movie. Reviews haven't been particularly good -- hence the quiet opening -- but the cast is top-notch and the material looks fun and difficult to resist despite the tepid reviews. Check out a new Us trailer below and get a taste of the action. This looks to be a bit more Guy Ritchie than Martin Scorsese, unfortunately, and that could be a part of what factors into the dismissive reviews. But there's also just...

There's a stylish new crime drama opening soon. It's called London Boulevard, and it's about a guy who's freshly out of prison, getting older and trying to make the right choices. When you consider that Colin Farrell plays the ex-con, it begins to feel a little like art imitating life.
Not that Farrell has actually been in prison. But to some degree, he has been in jail — movie jail, that is. When Farrell blasted onto the scene a little more than a decade ago as the Great Irish Hope, Hollywood did everything it could to make him a Star. And it should've worked. He's a talented, charismatic performer (though I think his eyebrows overact at times), but thanks to the vicissitudes of the movie biz, he never got that big hit necessary to launch him into the rarefied air he was expected to inhabit. And, on reflection, this might have been for the best.

It's not a cinematic adaptation of the classic arcade football game, sadly, but Jason Statham's new movie "Blitz" provides about as much cartoonishly manly entertainment as a couple hours with Midway's long running NFL franchise. The tagline of the film reads "Killer-cop versus cop-killer," and it's very possible that is an unabridged copy of the screenplay as well. This is not a movie about dialogue, but about good and bad man alternately glaring at and chasing after each other, and then sitting down for drinks before they get up and run around all over again.
Statham stars as Sgt. Brant, a loose cannon of a cop with a reputation for excessive violence and brutality on the job. He drinks too much, he curses too much, and when he catches some goons jacking a car, he beats them all to within an inch of their lives with a field hockey...

I’m having a hard time transforming my thoughts and feelings about director Elliott Lester’s balls-out action/thriller “Blitz” into words. On one hand, I felt that the feature was the perfect vehicle for genre hero Jason Statham, a man who excels at portraying intimidating, heavy-handed badasses. He’s good at what he does, and his turn as rogue detective Tom Brant provides the sort of testosterone-fueled excitement we’ve come to expect from the big guy. However, on the other hand, I feel that Lester and crew missed a lot of opportunities as they explored subplots that never should have made it into the final draft. I can’t immediately tell if the film is too short or too long, though I think I’m leaning towards the latter at the moment. I’ll get to that in a minute. Based on the novel by Ken Bruen, the...

A new trailer has been unleashed for Jason Statham's newest action-thriller Blitz. This is the third trailer I've seen for the film, and it looks like it's going to be a fun kick-ass movie. Jason Statham's new British action thriller Blitz may go straight to DVD in the U.S., but why, girls, why? It has all of these cineplex treats: Jason Statham's stathamminess, Paddy Considine as Statham's openly gay partner, and enough grumbled quips to appease most fans of the honorable Jean-Claude Van Damme. Adapted from Ken Bruen's novel by Moon scribe Nathan Parker, Blitz goes for grit and comes up with grumbles. I think we can all respect that.

New photos and a trailer were recently released for the upcoming action movie Killer Elite, which sees Jason Statham in yet another special ops agent character, this time hunting down an evil Clive Owen. Before Killer Elite bows in September, however, audiences will be treated to another Statham action thriller, Blitz.
Set in Statham's native Britain, Blitz casts the action star as Detective Sergeant Tom Brant, who is on the hunt for a serial killer (The Wire's Aidan Gillen) who targets other police officers. The movie was adapted from the novel by Irish pulp novelist Ken Bruen, who has a series of novels featuring the Brant character. Blitz opened in the UK in May, with IGN claiming that the movie "could be start of a beautiful franchise" that casts Statham as "a much more complex character than we're used to seeing." While not quite as glowing, The Guardian called it "oddly entertaining.

So there's this action movie starring Jason Statham. Shocker, right? This particular one is called Blitz, and we've already seen a couple [1] trailers [2] to show off the British action thriller. It looks like it's going straight to DVD in the Us, which is a bit strange given that Jason Statham action movies seem to earn enough coin to make a theatrical release worthwhile. But I'm not a company beancounter, so what do I know? Jason Statham plays a cop who is targeting a serial killer who is targeting cops. It's like an Ouroboros of cops and killers. For me, the attraction here is Paddy Considine, playing the openly gay partner to Statham's homophobic tough guy. Until I can see his directorial debut, Tyrannosaur, I'll be happy to watch him in anything. (More happy to watch him in Hot Fuzz and Red Road, but why split hairs?) Check out the trailer below,...

Despite it being a movie that nobody is anticipating — or even noticing — that greatly, it feels like I’ve written a decent amount about Blitz, the latest action film starring Jason Statham. There was a trailer back in November, and a red band preview back in March, which I do consider to be a lot for a movie that I completely forget exists ten minutes after writing about it.
Not that it looks bad. I would actually say that the previews make it looks like a fun little thriller that has a nice British cast around it, which I’m very often up for. Also starring Paddy Considine and Aiden Gillen, the latter of whom absolutely killed on the first season of Game of Thrones, this feels like the kind of violent, satisfying movie you would want from the realm of action cinema. And if that weren’t enough, this trailer features what is,...

With both Michael Bay and Shia Labeouf departing, the "Transformers" film franchise will be taking a different direction for a potential fourth entry which Paramount Pictures moving forward.
What direction that will be however is being highly debated at the moment, and Showbiz Spy has a rather speculative report indicating that action star Jason Statham is being looked at as a potential leading man.
The suggestion isn't a huge leap. The current third film's female lead, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is the real life girlfriend of Statham and would likely come back for the fourth film if he were involved.

For his directorial debut, the Oscar-winning writer of The Departed, William Monahan opts for another gangster tale, this time adapting Ken Bruen's cockney gangster novel London Boulevard. The story centres around Mitchell (Colin Farrell), a newly released convict looking to go straight. He lands himself the job as bodyguard to Charlotte (Keira Knightley), a reclusive actress perpetually hounded by the paparazzi. Mitchell's friends recognize his strength and reputation on the streets and are keen to draw him into their firm. As Mitchell desperately tries to distance himself from his previous life and spies a glimmer of hope in a burgeoning romance with Charlotte, he unwittingly attracts the attention of Gant (Ray Winstone), an East End kingpin who won't take no for an answer....

This is the review for Blitz on Pure Movies. The film is directed by Elliott Lester and starring Jason Statham (The Expendables, Snatch, The Transporter), David Morrissey (Centurion, Nowhere Boy), Luke Evans (Tamara Drewe, Robin Hood), Aidan Gillen (The Wire, Twelve Rounds), Paddy Considine (Submarine, The Bourne Ultimatum), Richard Riddell, Chris Wilson, Nicky Henson, Elly Fairman and Taya De La Cruz. Ah, the gritty underbelly of South-East London, where every copper is as mean as Jason Statham, every traditional pub has a man with a dog (or two), and every corner has a loony lurking in its shadows. Nathan Parker’s (Moon) adaptation of Ken Bruen’s novel, Blitz, couldn’t get more clichéd if it was a Guy Ritchie crime caper. Thankfully, there’s no cringeworthy ‘apples and pears’ Mockney slang in this – apart from the odd Statham muttering, and the ‘good’ side of the law looks as much...

Jason Statham, Paddy Considine and David Morrissey star in a decent London police thriller
Oddly entertaining, this London cop thriller dangles a tempting two-for-one offer. Buy a violent geezer caper – Jason "international action hero" Statham giving it some as a bovver boy in blue, doling out street justice with a hockey stick – and they'll throw in the best of Brit acting: Paddy Considine playing his gay police boss and Aidan Gillen as a cop killer. David Morrissey pops up as a grubby tabloid hack. It's not half bad, adapted from a Ken Bruen novel and slickly directed by Elliott Lester. London is dirty-looking, the detective work shonky at times. It's all fag-end believable, although the plot gets increasingly silly and far-fetched. For Statham, this is as character-driven as it gets: a chink of humour flashing through the bulldog charisma as he indulges in a spot of mild hetero-flirting with Considine's cop.

With British cop thriller Blitz out in cinemas today, we caught up with Aidan Gillen to talk about the film, and fighting Jason Statham...
An actor who’s often specialised in bringing flawed, unusual characters to the screen, including mayor Thomas Carcetti in The Wire and Stuart in Queer As Folk, Aidan Gillen may have found his most strange and unsettling role yet in the form of Blitz’s crazed murderer, Barry Weiss. A swaggering outsider with an affection for bright green shades and outlandish violence, Weiss is quite possibly the most memorable antagonist to appear on the big screen this year.
With Blitz out in UK cinemas today, we just had to find out how Gillen prepared for the role, what it was like to fight Jason Statham, and where he got that extraordinary pair of shades.
Did you base the character on anyone in particular? Weiss reminded me of Sid Vicious.

It is 8.30am on a Saturday morning. Normally at this time on a Saturday I’d be in the catatonic state that customarily precedes a hangover. But not today. Today I am fresh-faced and awake, for today I am embarking on the Stathamathon, a gruelling eight-hour marathon of ludicrously explosive action movies starring the balding Brit bruiser Jason Statham.
Since being recruited by Guy Ritchie in 1998 to lead up his debut gangster flick Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, the Stath has carved a very respectable career for himself blowing things up, shooting things with guns, and delivering one-liners in his patented mockney accent. As comedian Richard Sandling, our host for the day, correctly observed, “he is his own genre”.
The event is being organised by Lionsgate to promote the forthcoming Blitz, which will be screened alongside three other Stath classics: The Mechanic, The Expendables and audience choice Crank 2: High Voltage.

Jason Statham, Paddy Considine and Aidan Gillen all feature in an exclusive clip from the forthcoming British thriller, Blitz…
The closest we're likely to get to a British version of Don Siegel's 70s classic, Dirty Harry, director Elliott Lester's forthcoming Blitz is a gritty, grimy thriller about terse cops on the trail of a deranged killer.
Based on a novel by Ken Bruen, Elliott Lester's film is as much about moral boundaries and the influence of tabloid media as it is about star Jason Statham's unfailing ability to beat people up, and for an actor better known for his physical feats in action movies like The Transporter, Blitz marks a welcome foray into brooding drama/thriller territory.
With about a month to go before the film's release, we've got an exclusive clip from the film to share with you, which features lawmen Jason Statham and Paddy Considine...

If your Thursday is a little lacking on the testosterone front so far, allow us to juice things up with a smidgeon of The Stath, in new British thriller Blitz. Judging by the trailer, this one's a little straighter than the films we've seen Jason Statham in of late, but going by this clip, it's still got a lighter side.Based on the Ken Bruen novel, this is the story of Detective Sergeant Tom Brant (Statham) a cop who's after a serial killer. The wrinkle is that the killer is targeting police officers, upping the ante considerably for our hero. With Paddy Considine, Aidan Gillen and David Morrissey also onboard, this one's got us rather interested. Blitz opens on May 20 in the UK. brightcove.createExperiences();...

“London Boulevard” is from writer/director William Monahan, based on the novel by Ken Bruen. Colin Farrell stars as Mitchell, a recently paroled criminal determined to go straight. Alas, as soon as he’s out the prison doors, he’s besieged by a variety of old associates, all looking to put him right back into the thick of his criminal past. Fortunately, he also saves an uptown gal from being robbed by some London hoodlums, and as a result, gets an invitation to go to work for reclusive actress Charlotte (Keira Knightley) as a sort of all-purpose bodyguard. Did I mention that his old criminal associates refuse to let him go? Yup, it’s that kind of a story. You pretty much already know how “London Boulevard” will go from the first couple of minutes on out. Even so, Monahan manages to make quite the entertaining movie despite the fact...

So, didn't get a chance to see "The Mechanic" when it was in theaters a couple of months ago? Never fear, another movie with Jason Statham talking in his smoked leather voice and crackin' skulls is on the way (well, at least if you're in the U.K.). A red band trailer for "Blitz" has arrived and it delivers the generic goods. Once again, Jason Statham plays a loner who, this time, is on the hunt for a crazy cop killer. Believe it or not, the film is based on a novel by Ken Bruen and more surprisingly was written by…...

Who's ready for their biannual Jason Statham-obliterates-everyone fix? Hopefully you're shouting, "Me, me, me!" because after The Mechanic, Blitz fills his quota for 2011. (Or at least it would, had he not turned out to be such an overachiever [1].) The premise is beautiful in its simplicity: A sociopathic cop is dispatched to take down a serial killer who's targeting police officers. The result, likewise, appears to be everything one would hope: Brutal, visceral, and cheerfully demented. We already bore witness to the international trailer [2] for the film, but now there's a red band trailer, indulging a greater emphasis on C-words and facial-stomping. Check out the trailer after the break. This is more or less an abbreviated teaser, condensing most of what we saw in the earlier trailer into one frenzied, ferocious 30-second block. I actually prefer it. It's high on energy, low on spoilers, and conveys all that's appealing about...

The Blitz Red Band Movie Trailer has premiered. Swearing, blood splattering, and Jason Statham kicking ass are what welcome the viewer of this movie trailer. Elliott Lester‘s Blitz (2011) also stars Paddy Considine, Luke Evans, Aidan Gillen and David Morrissey. Blitz‘s plot synopsis: based on the book of the same name by Ken Bruen, “A tough policeman (Statham) beats up three hoodies who attempt to attack him with carpet knives when he finds them breaking into his car. He is sent to a police psychiatrist, but is soon chasing what appears to be a serial killer who is targeting police officers.” I liked the regular Blitz Movie Trailer far better than this one. All of the jokes and social references have been stripped away. All that is left is the basic plot. The cool is gone. Watch the Blitz red band trailer below and leave your thoughts on it.

Jason Statham plays the tough guy again in Lionsgate's action thriller "Blitz". With red band attached, second trailer of the pic shows nudity, foul language and merciless killing of police officers. "A word of advice, if you're gonna pick the wrong fight, at least pick the right weapon," Statham's Brant said in the trailer.

Kaboom
Opens: 2011
Cast: Thomas Dekker, Haley Bennett, Juno Temple, Kelly Lynch, James Duval
Director: Gregg Araki
Summary: Smith's everyday life in the dorm - hanging out with his arty, sarcastic best friend Stella, hooking up with a beautiful free spirit named London, lusting for his gorgeous but dim surfer roommate Thor - all gets turned upside-down after one fateful, terrifying night.
Analysis: A year after "Thelma and Louise" came "The Living End", an independent film which had a similar premise but made the protagonists two gay HIV+ men. It was raw, intense and signalled the arrival of a new talent in the form of filmmaker Gregg Araki. In the subsequent two decades, he's delivered several trippy films involving young, good-looking omnisexual people having lots of graphic sex and dealing with some wacky cobbled together plot shenanigans.
