Fiona Apple has offered her first musical output in 2023 with a cover of Idaho’s official state song “Here We Have Idaho” for NPR’s This American Life.
On the May 26th episode titled “Jane Doe,” Apple’s incisive rendition follows a story about a 19-year old intern at the Idaho state legislature who reported that state Representative Aaron von Ehlinger raped her in 2021, and the repercussions she suffered after his public ethics hearing and subsequent resignation. The cover has not yet been widely released, but can be heard at the end of Act Two (starting at the 1:00:52 mark for the online stream).
The Idaho state song makes for an unexpected pick by the New York native, but also feels sonically familiar with backing from Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters collaborators, including drummer Amy Wood, guitarist David Garza, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, and guitarist-engineer John Would. Authorities believe a custody dispute amidst a disintegrating marriage triggered a murder-suicide in South Carolina earlier this summer, after 36-year-old Jessica Edens shot and killed the woman whom she believed was her estranged husband’s girlfriend.
Edens then killed her two young children and, finally, shot herself, according to police. She left behind a scathing suicide note for her spouse.
Here are four things to know about the tragedy.
1. Edens’ Spree Began with Husband’s Suspected Girlfriend

South Carolina authorities have released suicide notes written by a mother who killed the woman she believed was her estranged husband’s girlfriend before turning the gun on her own two children and then herself, according to multiple reports.
Greenville Online reports that Jessica Edens, 36, wrote to her estranged husband, Ben Edens: “To Ben, you have caused me more pain than I’ve ever been in in my life. You have caused my children pain. I hate you. I hope you rot one day for what you have done to me and my kids. You can no longer hurt us.

“Wow” was the first thing that came to mind upon my first listening to The White Sea’s debut five-song Ep. It is clear the work has been meticulously crafted with sweeping soundscapes that will swallow you whole. The schizophrenic nature of the wide-ranging pop sound is a large part of its appeal. One moment you will be dancing and shouting along to “Ladykiller” (which is killer indeed), and you’ll be grinning along to the bouncing charm of “Overdrawn” the very next. But who is White Sea?
White Sea is the Alaska-born Morgan Kibby, who lists cheese, wine and analog synths as some of her favorite things and even used to have the rad job of restoring art. On her blog, she muses on the things that inspire her and truly connects with fans on a creative level, often providing short anecdotes and updates. Kibby’s...
