Oppenheimer continued its dominant awards season form on Sunday night at the American Society of Cinematographers’ ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards, with Hoyte van Hoytema taking the prize for theatrical feature film.
The win was Van Hoytema’s first ASC award, after previously being nominated for Dunkirk (2018) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2012).
On the TV side, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s M. David Mullen won the ASC prize for an episode of one hour of television, Barry‘s Carl Herse won for an episode of a half-hour series and Boston Strangler‘s Ben Kutchins won for limited or anthology series or motion picture made for TV.

“Oppenheimer” cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema won Feature Film at the 38th ASC Awards, March 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Oscar favorite beat the other four Oscar nominees: “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” Poor Things,” and “El Conde”.
This marked van Hoytema’s first ASC win after three nominations (including “Dunkirk” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and positions the Dutch-Swedish cinematographer for his first Oscar win. Significantly, “Oppenheimer” represents the culmination of his experimental IMAX collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. The duo achieved a new kind of intimate spectacle with this psychological thriller about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy), the “father of the atomic bomb.” Van Hoytema used the large-format IMAX camera to explore the landscape of faces; namely, Oppenheimer’s in color from his perspective and Salieri-like adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss’ (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white from his.

Hoyte Van Hoytema has taken top honors at the 38th annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards for his work on “Oppenheimer.”
Van Hoytema topped a field that included Edward Lachman for “El Conde, Matthew Libatique for “Maestro,” Rodrigo Prieto for “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Robbie Ryan for “Poor Things.”
The awards were handed out Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with Ed Helms hosting the festivities.
All five theatrical feature film nominees are also nominated for best cinematography at the Oscars.
In its 38-year history, only 17 have gone on to win the Oscar. Last year, Mandy Walker made history when she became the first woman to win an ASC award for her work on “Elvis.” The Academy Award ultimately went to James Friend for “All Quiet on the Western Front.”
On the TV side, winners included Carl Herse for “Barry” and Ben Kutchins for “Boston Strangler.”

The American Society of Cinematographers has unveiled the nominations for its 38th annual ASC Awards, honoring the year’s best in feature film, documentary and television cinematography.
The society’s marquee Theatrical Feature Film nominees are chock-full of awards-season favorite pics, with one surprise. Edward Lachman is up for the Netflix pic El Conde, joining the likes of Matthew Libatique for Maestro, Rodrigo Prieto for Killers of the Flower Moon, Robbie Ryan for Poor Things, Hoyte van Hoytema for Oppenheimer.
Prieto also lensed the year’s No. 1 movie, Barbie, but missed the ASC cut today.
The group’s film winner has gone on to claim the Academy Award nearly half of the time — 17 times in its 37 years — but not last year. Mandy Walker won the ASC’s top film prize in 2023, but the Academy Award went to James Friend for All Quiet on the Western Front.

Stepping into dictating the overall creative vision for the latest episode in season two of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty was “a natural progression” of the work Todd Banhazl has done on the sports drama about the emergence of the basketball franchise. So says the filmmaker who received an Emmy nomination for best cinematography for a single-camera series for his work on the HBO show in 2022. Yet when it comes to being the one who directed Sunday’s pivotal episode — which sets the stage for the decades-long rivalry between Lakers leading man Magic Johnson (played by Quincy Isaiah) and Boston Celtics’ Larry Bird (played by Sean Patrick Small) — Banhazl, says casually, “I think I got really lucky.”

I don't think there has been a superhero television series with an as expansive legacy as "Arrow." Premiering on The CW in 2012, the series not only ran for impressive eight seasons but spawned the "Arrowverse," a shared television universe. "Arrow" led to the creation of "The Flash," "Legends of Tomorrow," and more, with these DC Comics-inspired series regularly crossing over with one another. The show stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, a playboy who returns to his hometown of Star City after presumingly being stranded on a remote island for five years, as the vigilante Green Arrow.
Initially coming out the gate as a dark and gritty take on the Green Arrow mythos, "Arrow" let itself get weird and leaned into its comic book origins for an entertaining, if uneven, superhero show. There is a wide range of quality across the show's entire run, from its attempts to visibly...

A truncated Panama Int’l Film Festival (Iff Panama) wrapped Dec. 4 on a high note, with the debut doc-feature “Nación de Titanes” by Panamanian Joaquín Horna Sosa snagging the Audience Award, a good indication of its box office potential.
One of only four Panamanian features in competition, “Nación de Titanes” follows six wrestlers during Panama’s golden age of wrestling during the ‘60s through the ‘80s. Doc-feature stars wrestlers Sandokan, Ricardo Díaz, El Greco, El Titán, Cronox II and Johnny González as it chronicles the ups and downs of their respective careers and digs into the origins of the sport.
The three-day festival had encouraging news from Culture Minister Giselle Gonzalez and Panama City Deputy Mayor Judy Meana who both pledged their continued support for the festival.

In the grand old splattered hallways of slasher horror movies, few franchises are as up and down and all around as that of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Since Tobe Hooper terrified us back in 1974 with, what is still, one of the greatest and most terrifying, raw and sadistic horror films ever made, there have been numerous attempts to match this landmark original.
Some have drawn cult fandom, some continue to fiercely divide (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation), some are just plain terrible (2017’s Leatherface) or meh (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3: Leatherface) and some are rather underrated if very flawed attempts at taking the lore elsewhere while remaining somewhat true (Texas Chainsaw 3D). But now, ol’ Leatherface faces his next challenge, and most frightening…social media!

“Texas Chainsaw Massacre” cinematographer Ricardo Diaz knew he would pay homage to the original film while working on the 2022 sequel. Teaming with director David Blue Garcia and Mark Burnham, who plays the iconic movie slasher, Diaz took on recreating Leatherface’s famous dance… in one take.
Diaz spoke with Variety about pulling off that feat in “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” offering insight into the horror film’s cinematography.
What it was like shooting the iconic Leatherface dance, and how did you execute it in one take?
David Blue Garcia and I have a shorthand because of our years-long friendship — we went to film school together — and he also came up in the business as a cinematographer. We essentially speak the same language both technically and artistically. So, collaborating with him was so effortless. For nearly 50 years, Tobe Hooper's masterpiece of independent filmmaking, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, has populated every list detailing the most influential, greatest, scariest horror films of all time. And it justifiably deserves every single accolade in some way.
The gruesome masked killer, Leatherface, has continued his rampage as any good scary movie villain should, with sequels, remakes, origin stories, and now, with David Blue Garcia's Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a chance to communicate the massacre again in modern times. The result is an uneven mix of modernistic sentiments and simplified social commentary combined with the visceral driving force of a buzzing chainsaw, brutal gore, and unabashed violence for the sake of violence.
A group of idealistic young people escapes the city for a new beginning in the rural town of Harlow. Melody (Sarah Yarkin) and her teenage sister Lila (Elsie Fisher) have short-lived peace as they disrupt the...

In David Blue Garcia’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), old man Leatherface (played by Lowlife’s Mark Burnham) squares off against a group of gentrifying Gen Zers who set out to rejuvenate a dying small town in Texas, not realizing their idealistic plans are about to be thwarted by a gruesome generational clash that results in a ton of chainsaw-related carnage and endless bloodshed. But before Texas’ most notorious face-wearing cannibal sets these twentysomethings straight, a blast from his past in the form of Sally Hardesty arrives for a showdown nearly five decades in the making.

Whenever a TV show that has gone on for long enough ends in a planned finale, it’s typical for many of its previous supporting characters to make cameo appearances, and the very final episode of Arrow was no exception. In fact, here’s a full rundown of everyone who was featured.
First off, there’s Team Arrow. The group has varied in size and members over the years, but its current lineup of Diggle, there from the very beginning, and Dinah, Laurel and Rene, each a fixture since season 5, were the ones to see it through to the end.
The episode’s flashbacks were an appropriate choice given their prominent use in the show’s narrative, and allowed for Oliver’s participation in the finale. This being his show, it would feel wrong for its ending to not feature him, despite him being dead. The first brought us back to season 2 episode “Seeing Red,...

Arrow Season 8 Episode 5
This episode sends Oliver and his family back to Russia for a nostalgia-filled adventure, while Roy and Diggle had a heart to heart and just about everyone else was sidelined off-screen out of necessity.
There’s something about seeing Stephen Amell shooting those tennis balls, the iconography from the very first promos, that tweaks something in my chest. Oliver and Mia had some much-needed bonding and training time, laden with all kinds of Arrow imagery, like Oliver dislocating his thumbs, Bratva fight club, and even an homage to the original hood that miraculously stayed on his head no matter how vigorously he moved. Mia’s bell fight sequence was a fun watch and helped move forward her complicated issues around her...

Over the course of its impressive run, Arrow sure has delivered its share of memorable overarching villains. To say that the likes of Malcolm Merlyn, Deathstroke, Ra’s al Ghul, Damien Darhk and Prometheus left a lasting impression on Oliver Queen is a massive understatement. In fact, some of them even returned in various capacities after their initial defeat.
Following the first five seasons, things became a little more complicated. If you’ll recall, season 6 threw us for a loop by forcing us to believe Cayden James was the main threat, only to reveal Ricardo Diaz as evil incarnate. Then, in season 7, Diaz remained a nuisance to our heroes for a time, but was then succeeded by Emiko Queen and the Ninth Circle.

To the excitement of many viewers, it was recently revealed that, yes, Oliver Queen will don a new costume for Arrow‘s eighth and final season. Granted, the one he’d been wearing since season 5 was mighty badass, but it was time for a change.
Likewise, Earth- 2’s Laurel Lance will be given an upgrade, which I find to be highly appropriate because it’s probably for the better she rebrand herself now that she’s on the side of good. After all, it’d be in her best interest not to wear the same attire she did while parading around with Cayden James and Ricardo Diaz.
Now, you probably noticed her new threads in the first trailer for season 8, but we’ve included a pretty sharp screenshot in the gallery below so that you may savor the details. And if that weren’t enough, some concept art showing off...

Once Arrow fans had a chance to digest the official synopsis for the season finale, none of us could help pondering which returning familiar faces it was referring to. Whether your suspicions be directed toward Talia al Ghul, Ricardo Diaz or Curtis Holt, these are all entirely valid choices, but some recently presented evidence may hint at who one of them may be.
Believe it or not, the network has released two more images from next week’s episode, “Living Proof,” and they feature none other than Colin Donnell’s Tommy Merlyn. I don’t know why these couldn’t have been included in the original set released earlier this week, but you’re free to check them out below.
As longtime viewers of the series should recall, Tommy met his untimely demise during season 1’s finale but has appeared in flashbacks and hallucinations in the time since. More recently,...

In less than two weeks, Arrow‘s seventh season will have concluded and we’ll be forced to endure several months without new adventures featuring Stephen Amell as the Emerald Archer. On the plus side, the next couple of episodes should prove to be quite explosive, as past years have taught us around this time.
Obviously, the finale will feature the final showdown between Oliver and Emiko, who’ve been engaging in the most dangerous of sibling rivalries. And while the cryptic synopsis guarantees just that, it does offer something else quite intriguing:
Family Ties — The battle between Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Emiko (Sea Shimooka) comes to a boiling point which brings back some familiar faces and leaves others in dire jeopardy. James Bamford directed the episode written by Beth Schwartz & Rebecca Bellotto (#722). Original airdate 5/13/2019.

If you’re an “Olicity” shipper, then I imagine you’re going to be savoring the next four episodes of Arrow for all they’re worth. The reason I’m saying that is because, as those who’ve kept up with news pertaining to the series are aware, Emily Bett Rickards will soon be exiting the show, and has opted to not stick around for the eighth and final season.
At the time of this writing, it remains unknown exactly how Felicity Smoak will be written off, but we’ve been given hints as to how it may happen. Personally, I think a string of events yet to unfold will lead “Overwatch” to arrive at the decision to leave Star City behind and raise her baby in seclusion.
Someone who’d beg to differ though is that of Kirk Acevedo, who thinks his character of Ricardo Diaz should’ve put the kibosh on Felicity.

Aside from Oliver Queen himself, one could argue that if any recurring character on Arrow has endured the most personal growth in recent memory, it’s that of Earth-2’s Laurel Lance. Since coming over from the universe next door a few seasons back, she fought at the side of Ricardo Diaz before turning on him and beginning her own path to redemption. As Star City’s District Attorney, she was instrumental in getting Ollie freed from prison.
Unfortunately, all of her hard work has been jeopardized now that Emiko Queen has leaked photos confirming her past association with Diaz to the press. As a result, her days as a public servant are now likely over, and the official synopsis for “Lost Canary” confirms her going off the deep end:

Right now, I think it may be safe to say that Arrow has revealed its true big bad for season 7 – and it’s actually Emiko Queen. If you tuned in for “Inheritance” last night, then not only did you see her playing the role of double agent and her history with Dante detailed during the flashback segments, but you also saw her giving him orders.
From what we gather, it is she who leads the Ninth Circle these days. I’m still not willing to rule out Oliver getting through to her before the season finale, but it appears as though she’s far more villainous than her comic book counterpart. After all, it was implied at the end that Emiko sank the Queen’s Gambit all those years ago.

Though I’m sure many of you are still talking about Felicity Smoak revealing that she’s pregnant, my big takeaway from the past Monday’s episode of Arrow was the arrival of Dante. If you also tuned in, then you saw him make a big impact by holding his own against Oliver Queen, before later meeting with Emiko. Suffice it to say, she has history with the new big bad in town.
But before “Brothers & Sisters” could conclude, somebody managed to burn Ricardo Diaz alive in his cell at Argus. And while their identity remained a mystery to viewers, it was apparent that “the Dragon” instantly recognized them. Of course, this has led some to believe Diaz is dead, but we’re not so sure.

And if that weren’t enough, we also found out that Felicity Smoak is pregnant.
I guess there was really no better time to drop that bomb on the fans because Mia Aka Blackstar has been detailing her lineage in the flash forward segments. And when you do the math, she’d have to be conceived around this time in order to be of fitting age in the future of 2040.

It's time for Diggle and Lyla to get a different storyline.
As we saw on Arrow Season 7 Episode 14, the stupid Ghost Initiative (aka Suicide Squad) was back again with little purpose. Argus is so dull that the show is counting on one of the worst groups ever to air on it for inspiration.
If the Ghost Initiative was worth its weight, we'd see more of Carrie Cutter and China White. Instead, they're barely eye candy as the focus was again (and for the last time) on Ricardo Diaz.
It was going to be an ugly conversation when Diggle eventually shared news of the new Ghost Initiative member with Felicity and Oliver. Felicity's world changed when she was under attack by Diaz.
You're joking. You're working with the man who threatened to kill my entire family?

An uneven episode reminds us how much we connect with Arrow's heroes and how little we care about the villains

Arrow Season 7 Episode 14
“Brothers & Sisters” was a bit of the mixed bag, though it does illustrate well what’s going right and wrong with this season.
Where this episode shined was the relationships between our characters, something that has been hard to find this season and last. It was good to see Oliver and Felicity’s marriage continue to progress with Oliver finding a way to both express his disagreement with Felicity’s plan to kill Diaz and support her ultimate decision nonetheless. Oliver has come a long way, especially when it comes to considering himself the center of the universe. Felicity went through a lot when he was in prison, and just as she can never fully know the trauma of Slabside,...

If you’ve been following news pertaining to Arrow since last summer, then you’re aware of how the producers have been holding their cards close to the vest when it comes to this particular series. Furthermore, they’ve withheld certain episode titles for as long as possible – or even changed them at the eleventh hour.
So far, all we’d really known about episode 7×14 was a cryptic hint offered by executive producer and showrunner Beth Schwartz. As it turns out, said offering will be titled “Brothers & Sisters,” which may have something to do with Oliver and Emiko’s relationship. And since it’s pluralized, perhaps we may see that concept applied to the future – maybe with William Clayton and Mia Smoak.
For now, though, an entirely different plot thread is teased by the trailer found at the top of this article, and that’s something having to do with Ricardo Diaz.

With all that’s been occurring on this season of Arrow, it’s actually kind of difficult to say just who the big bad is. After all, Ricardo Diaz is currently in Argus custody and Oliver Queen has his hands full with Emiko, though she’s hardly a villain. The Longbow Hunters proved to be a thorn in the sides of our heroes, sure, but they came off as glorified henchmen rather than chief antagonists in an overall narrative.
In fact, our biggest hint at what’s to come has been teased by John Diggle’s intensifying hunt for the mysterious terrorist known as Dante. At first, my brain admittedly conjured images of the lead character from the Devil May Cry series of video games, though I’m quite certain executive producer Beth Schwartz and company have been looking to more recent Green Arrow comics for inspiration, specifically those penned...

The midseason finale of Arrow season 7 dropped a major bombshell that’ll change the Queen family forever, as it revealed that the new Green Arrow who’d taken over from Oliver during his incarceration was actually Emiko Queen, the long-lost half-sister he never knew he had.

Well, the promo for next week’s episode, “Past Sins,” teases that Oliver will try and extend an olive branch to Emiko, apologizing for how their father treated her. However, Emiko has grown up hating the Queens, so it doesn’t look like it’s going to be that easy to bury the hatchet, especially while she’s busy burying arrows in bad guys.

“Elseworlds” is mostly about bringing the various heroes of the Arrowverse together, but the second part of the three-night crossover event also saw the return of various villains from the franchise’s past as well.
First off, as this was an Arrow episode, we opened on a fight between A.R.G.U.S. and Joe Wilson (Liam Hall), the son of Deathstroke last seen in season 6. As we jump into the middle of the action here, we’re not sure how he came to return to Star City with the intent of killing John Diggle and company. Notably though, he’s got hold of one of his dad’s suits this time around. However, it’s still not enough to best the Flash-powered Oliver Queen.
Later on in the episode, during an altercation amidst a break-out at Arkham Asylum in Gotham, Barry and Oliver are hit with a dose of Scarecrow’s fear gas.

Who are the Longbow Hunters from Arrow? There are two places […]
