Overlong and erratically paced, Brendan Kyle Cochrane’s New York City-based “Equal Standard” opens with a self-conscious scene that heavy-handedly hints at an impending tragedy. There in the sun-dappled kitchen of the happy Jones family, Detective Chris (Tobias Truvillion), Sergeant Jackie (Syleena Johnson) and their adorable daughter lovingly go about their rosy morning routine, while an over-sentimental score embellished with stark notes of caution (one of the film’s various recurring motifs of unsubtlety) accompanies the perfect picture. As the doting husband and wife exchange their daily goodbyes before taking off for their high-risk professions, there is so much weight and emphasis placed on the concerned Jackie when she says “Be safe” that you prophetically know Chris is soon going to need that advice.

In its debut last year at the Kirk Douglas Theater in Los Angeles, Rajiv Joseph's play "Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo" caught the attention of the local critics and theatergoers for its tremendous depth and heart. It is a play Back Stage called "a monumental work that muses on cruelty and nature, language and creativity, religion and remorse." The Pulitzer Prize committee likewise valued it, naming it a finalist for the 2010 drama prize. Uniquely unsuited to a one-sentence description, the play is less about plot, more about ideas—explicated by a tiger, American soldiers, an Iraqi interpreter, the deceased sons of Saddam Hussein, and a variety of Iraqi women, undervalued and treasured. But the play would have remained words on a sheaf of papers had not Moisés Kaufman—a playwright and founder of Tectonic Theater Project in addition to being a world-class director—taken up its direction. After thoughtfully casting the piece,...

I might be a genius. Last night as I watched and thought about where the final episodes of 24 might be headed, everything began to make sense. Jack is going to die. I'm 87.325 % certain! First, we had all the media speculation on whether or not this will be the final season - Kiefer made statements that it all depended upon ratings. Next, the movie rumors were trotted out, yet again, but no one paid much attention since we've heard them before. But then, Fox announced that indeed, the eighth day will be Jack Bauer's last. Now all of a sudden we have writers and a director attached to the movie, and yesterday Kiefer said the script is already finished, though he hasn't read it. Meanwhile, is Kiefer staying in shape and keeping his nose clean so he'll be ready to work on the film? Nope - he's out getting drunk and into trouble again.
