Long after their passings, the feud between Johnny Ramone and Joey Ramone lives on. Johnny’s widow, Linda Ramone, is suing Joey’s brother, Mickey Leigh, over the Pete Davidson-led Netflix biopic I Slept With Joey Ramone.
Johnny and Joey notoriously had a cantankerous relationship throughout the existence of the Ramones. In fact, Joey dated Linda before she eventually married Johnny.
The movie, which is currently in development and stars Davidson as Joey, is based on Leigh’s memoir I Slept With Joey Ramone. In her lawsuit, Linda claims that Leigh “covertly developed an unapproved and unauthorized Ramones-based biopic” that is based on his “one-sided recitation of the history of the Ramones,” according to Billboard.
Linda’s attorneys further state, “Ms. Ramone objects to defendants’ attempt to create a Ramones film without her involvement — not to be obstinate, but rather based on defendants’ disregard for [Ramones] assets and their conduct and treatment of Ms.

Joey Ramone died 20 years ago, on April 15th, 2001, and Netflix marked the occasion on Thursday by announcing that Pete Davidson will play the punk icon in a biopic. It will be based on I Slept With Joey Ramone, a 2009 book by his brother, Mickey Leigh.

Pete Davidson and Jason Orley are reuniting for “I Slept with Joey Ramone,” Netflix’s upcoming biopic about the life of the frontman for iconic punk band The Ramones. Netflix announced on Thursday that Orley, who made his directorial debut with 2019’s Davidson-led “Big Time Adolescence,” will direct the upcoming film. The duo serve as writers on the project, which is based on the Mickey Leigh memoir of the same name. The film is a collaboration between Netflix and STXfilms, both of which will develop and produce the biopic.

Pete Davidson is gearing up to portray punk rock pioneer Joey Ramone in the upcoming biopic “I Slept With Joey Ramone” for Netflix and STXfilms.
The announcement comes on the 20th anniversary of Ramone’s death. The biopic will chronicle the life and times of the legendary musician — born Jeffrey Ross Hyman in 1951 — who cofounded the group in Queens, New York in 1974 and went on to change the sound of rock music by stripping it down to Chuck Berry-level basics (but played twice as fast). The Ramones were arguably the first true punk rock band, and not only helped launch the scene around the downtown venue Cbgb but ignited the British punk scene with performances in the U.K. in 1976. The group disbanded in 1996, but their popularity and influence is vast and undeniable.

Jeff Hyman, aka Joey Ramone, died 10 years ago Friday (April 15) from lymphoma. As the frontman of the Ramones, Joey gave us an alternate soundtrack for the disco years -- the band's simple, power chord-heavy anthems stood in stark contrast to the BeeGees, Donna Summer and soft rock that dominated the late 1970s music charts.
Towards the end of his life, reports the Los Angeles Times, Joey suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and didn't leave the house.
"He just stayed in and kept going though his repetitive rituals," writes his brother Mickey Leigh (in his book "I Slept with Joey Ramone"). "Putting on the same clothes every day; not throwing anything away; tapping; turning switches and faucets on and off; and repeatedly picking things up and putting them down."

They played songs that set a new land speed record and remained together through 18 years of drugs, dysfunction and failed record sales. Now the Ramones, traditionally dubbed "the godfathers of punk", are to receive the big-screen Hollywood treatment in a biopic entitled I Slept With Joey Ramone. Fox Searchlight is in negotiations to board the bio-pic of the seminal New York punk band, based on a memoir titled "I Slept With Joey Ramone" written by Joey's brother, Mickey Leigh and longtime punk writer and Ramones chronicler Legs McNeil. This is not the first time the Ramones have been featured in a movie. There was the teen rebel comedy Rock n' Roll High School back in 1979, a soon to be remake of that film produced by Howard Stern and the 2004 acclaimed documentary End of the Century, which covered the group's influence and detailed its internal strife, from Dee Dee's drug...

I realize it's only been 30 years since they were at the height of their careers, but it's stunning that we haven't yet managed to get a Ramones biopic out there. Now it looks like precisely the right people are trying to get it going. Fox Searchlight is in negotiations to pick up a project based on the memoir I Slept With Joey Ramone, written by Mickey Leigh, the brother of the band's lead singer. Of course, the key element of any music biopic is the music, and according to Variety the negotiations there are so tricky that no deal has yet been finalized. But given that Searchlight managed to make $40 million off the mediocre rap biopic Notorious earlier this year, it's inspiring to think of what they could do with the Ramones story told well. The book, logically, centers on Joey Ramone, the mercurial lead singer who died of lymphoma...

A Ramones biopic -- that being a film that sounds inherently cartoonish in the first place -- would be nothing without the band's music and the leeway to find great talent. An independent production based on the book I Slept with Joey Ramone, written by Joey's brother Mickey Leigh and punk chronicler Legs McNeil (to be published this December), has slowly been gaining ground. But now Fox Searchlight is negotiating a buy-in, which could change a lot of things. THR reports the deal, and rightly suggests that Fox Searchlight's clout could give the movie some momentum. Producer Rory Rosegarten has been going it alone for a while, negotiating rights buys for both the book and the music of the Ramones. That's one place where the Fox Searchlight buy-in could get complicated; any studio/distributor is going to be wary of rights deals negotiated by someone else. And if you're telling...

Life so often imitates art. A subplot on a past season of HBO's hit series "Entourage" saw movie star Vinny Chase (Adrien Grenier) in the running for a leading role in a Ramones biopic. A variety of factors led to that fictional project being put to rest, but wheels appear to have been turning on a similar effort back here in the real world. Fox Searchlight is negotiating to bring "I Slept With Joey Ramone," an as-yet-unreleased memoir written by the singer's brother Mickey Leigh, to the big screen, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.
Let's be clear here: this remains a developing story. The book's still-unfolding road to the silver screen has been a long one. Manager-producer Rory Rosengarten negotiated for the rights to the book -- which was still being written at the time -- and the band's music over a period of several years. It's been 8 years now since Joey Ramone passed away, and 5 years since Johnny Ramone died, so I suppose it's about time someone got around to making a Ramones biopic... right? Well according to the Risky Biz Blog [1], Fox Searchlight is doing exactly that. The indie imprint is currently in negotiations with producer Rory Rosegarten, who owns the big screen rights to the upcoming book I Slept with Joey Ramone, written by Joey's brother Mickey Leigh. Rosegarten also managed to get the rights to use the music of The Ramones, which is pretty key. Fox Searchlight sounds like an ideal place for a project like this to develop as they have always been willing to take chances and have a great way of understanding and marketing to subcultures. However, I'm not so sure about this Rory Rosegarten fellow; he was an executive producer on Everybody Loves Raymond. At any rate, The...

A reaction to the extreme popularity of a band that produced music that itself was a reaction to the bloated pop music of the 1970s, the Ramones are headed to the big screen.
