In a world where California's Los Angeles police department is being 'defunded' by multimillionaires, indifferent to the rioting and looting of businesses, homes and people in poverty-stricken districts, Sony Pictures "L.A.'s Finest", a crime-fighting cop, TV series spin-off from Jerry Bruckheimer's "Bad Boys" movie franchise, starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, will not be picked up again by Spectrum TV after two seasons, despite an outcry from fans of the series:
"...'Burnett' (Union), last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, has left her complicated past behind to become an 'LAPD' detective.
"Paired with 'Nancy McKenna' (Alba), a working mom with an equally complex past, Burnett is pushed to examine whether her unapologetic lifestyle might be masking a greater personal secret.
"These two women don’t agree on much, but they find common ground when it comes to taking on the most dangerous criminals in Los Angeles.

Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba are no longer a member of the force at Spectrum.
Spectrum Originals has officially canceled LA's Finest after two seasons, according to Deadline.
The Bad Boys spinoff found Union reprises her role as Syd Barrett, who works as an LAPD detective alongside partner Nancy McKenna, played by Alba.
The supporting cast included Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) and Duane Martin (Real Husbands of Hollywood) as fellow detectives Ben Walker and Ben Baines, Ryan McPartlin (Chuck) as Nancy’s husband Patrick, and Ernie Hudson (Grace and Frankie) as Syd’s ex-cop father Joseph.
The series had a long and winding road to the screen after starting its life as an NBC pilot.
Despite being a lock for a series order, the Peacock network decided against a pickup, leaving producers to scramble to get the series on the air.

Spectrum has canceled “LA’s Finest” after two seasons, TheWrap has confirmed. The show’s second season premiered last month.
A spinoff of the “Bad Boys” film series, “L.A.’s Finest” featured Gabrielle Union reprising her role as Syd Burnett from 2003’s “Bad Boys II.” Now an LAPD detective, Syd is paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba). Alba and Union are executive producers on the series alongside Brandon Margolis, Brandon Sonnier, Pam Veasey, Doug Belgrad, Jonathan Littman, KristieAnne Reed, Jeff Gaspin, Jeff Morrone and pilot director Anton Cropper.
The show’s second season was originally scheduled to premiere in June, but Spectrum postponed that to September in response to the wave of protests that erupted nationwide in response to the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer on Memorial Day.
The first season of “L.A.’s Finest” is currently airing on Fox.

Spectrum has opted not to order a third season of cop drama L.A.’s Finest, an offshoot from the Bad Boys movie franchise headlined by Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, I have learned.
The decision comes a little over a month after the show’s second season launched on the platform. Spectrum had no comment.
Season 2 was originally scheduled to premiere on June 8, but was pushed to September amid the George Floyd protests against police brutality. All 13 episodes were released at once on September 9 as a weekly air pattern for Season 1.
The first season of L.A.’s Finest is currently airing on Fox, which acquired the series for its fall schedule that was impacted by the pandemic-related production shutdown. It got off to a solid ratings start though the numbers have slipped since.

Protecting and serving never looked so good.
Though LA's Finest Season 1 aired over a year ago on Spectrum, the spinoff from the Bad Boys franchise premieres on Fox this fall, and LA's Finest Season 1 Episode 1 makes the most of its 46 minutes of screen time.
The pilot is everything you could want in an action adventure movie -- high stakes, danger at every turn, attractive-beyond-belief actors.
However, as an episode of television, it does leave something to be desired.
The series premiere is rich with action, drama, and suspense, sometimes to its detriment.
While many police procedurals on television skirt the lines of plausibility, three separate shootouts, a kidnapping, and a grenade going off is hardly within the realm of possibility.
And that doesn't even take into account Burnett going fully cocked while "off-duty," from holding Ray and his men at gunpoint to burning down his club.
It just felt...

Depending on your familiarity with the Bad Boys franchise, combined with your understanding of the phrase “Spectrum Originals,” Monday’s premiere of L.A.’s Finest may not have been your first encounter with the unstoppable crime-fighting team of Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba.

The first season of “L.A.’s Finest” premieres Monday on Fox, more than two years after the now-Spectrum Originals drama’s pilot was passed on at NBC. And when the Gabrielle Union- and Jessica Alba-led police procedural finally makes its way to broadcast, it will, of course, be a broadcast-friendly version of the series.
So how much will Fox viewers be missing out on if they’re tuning in to Season 1 tonight versus streaming the original cut on the Charter Communications-owned platform? The answer here actually has more to do with run time issues versus inappropriate content.

Spectrum Originals has delayed the season 2 premiere of “L.A.’s Finest” amid the nationwide protests against police brutality and systemic racism.
The “Bad Boys” spinoff was scheduled to return for its sophomore season on Monday with its first three episodes available, but has instead decided to push it back until later 2020, the network confirmed to TheWrap.

Here is a wrap up of all the news you need to know from Thursday, April 30, 2020.
Amazon is in it for the long haul with The Boys.
The Cinema Spot is reporting that the superhero drama has scored an early renewal for Season 3.
An early renewal is unsurprising, with the series pulling off a similar trick ahead of its series premiere last year.
The Boys is set in a universe where superpowered individuals are recognized as heroes by the general public and owned by powerful corporation Vought International, which markets and monetizes them.
Outside of their heroic personas, most are arrogant and corrupt. The series primarily focuses on two groups: the Seven, Vought International's premier superhero team, and the titular Boys, vigilantes looking to keep the corrupted heroes under control.
The Boys are led by Billy Butcher, who despises all superpowered people, and the Seven are led by the egotistical and unstable Homelander.
Amazon is in it for the long haul with The Boys.
The Cinema Spot is reporting that the superhero drama has scored an early renewal for Season 3.
An early renewal is unsurprising, with the series pulling off a similar trick ahead of its series premiere last year.

Exclusive: Orlando Jones has booked a recurring role opposite Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba in the second season of Spectrum’s L.A.’s Finest.
This is Jones’ first TV series casting following his two seasons on Starz’s American Gods as trickster god Anansi, aka Mr. Nancy. Jones made headlines recently, claiming he was fired ahead of Season 3 and alleging racial bias. Series producer Fremantle has insisted that Jones was not fired, but that the company decided not to pick up a third-season option on his contract because of the narrative focus of the upcoming season.
Union, who made her own headlines late last year with her controversial firing from the Fremantle-produced NBC reality series America’s Got Talent, triggering an investigation, was among the first to reach out to Jones after he revealed his ouster from American Gods on social media.

(Warning: Light spoilers for “Bad Boys for Life” below)
It looks like we’ll have to wait for “Bad Boys 4” for the Bad Boys Cinematic Universe to come to fruition.
“Bad Boys for Life,” the long-awaited third film the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence action franchise, hit theaters this weekend. One of the characters from the previous film, Gabrielle Union’s Sydney “Syd” Burnett, doesn’t appear.
Normally, a supporting character not returning for the follow-up film wouldn’t be a big deal — and it certainly wasn’t for film-goers, as the movie brought in $68 million over the 4-day holiday weekend. But with Union starring on “L.A.’s Finest,” a spinoff of the franchise that airs on Spectrum Originals, was there an opportunity missed on giving the series a nice publicity bump ahead of its second season later this year?

L.A.’s Finest, the female-led TV spinoff of the Bad Boys movies, will get another season on streaming platform Spectrum Originals.
L.A.’s Finest will see stars Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba continue their City of Angels-set buddy cop comedy for a second season.
Spectrum Originals, the Charter Communications-owned small screen platform on which L.A.’s Finest streams on demand, has officially renewed the series for Season 2. It’s a rather quick turnaround for the show – a spinoff of the Bad Boys films of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence – having only debuted on May 13, utilizing a rather unique release strategy of dropping a few episodes a week, rather than conventional strategies of weekly episodes or the Netflix full-season binge-dump. Indeed, the first season of L.A.’s Finest will premiere the last of its 13-episode run on Monday, June 17.

Fox Networks Group has picked up the UK rights to Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba action drama L.A.’s Finest. The UK broadcaster has struck a deal with Sony Pictures Television for the 13-episode series.
The series, which is based in Jerry Bruckheimer’s Bad Boys universe, will launch in the UK in May. Fox has snagged U.S. cop show “L.A.’s Finest” for the U.K. The series is set within the universe of Jerry Bruckheimer’s “Bad Boys” franchise and is an original for Spectrum in the U.S.
Following the La Screenings, Fox Networks Group has acquired the 13-part procedural. It will play on the Fox channel in the U.K.
The series follows Syd Burnett (Union), last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, who has seemingly left her complicated past behind to become an Lapd detective. The show is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television and 2.0 Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television. Spt handles distribution and struck the U.K. deal.

TruTV is laying off most of its marketing and programming staffers, who will receive severance packages as part of exit deals similar to those at other units of WarnerMedia. The company has been streamlining and consolidating since At&T acquired Time Warner for $81 billion in 2018. The restructuring accelerated in February, when the federal government ended its pursuit of an antitrust lawsuit seeking to block the merger.
Deadline has confirmed the truTV departures are close to 50, or nearly 40% of the network’s workforce. The departments are not shutting down completely, with small programming and marketing teams to remain when the network team joins other New York divisions next week at WarnerMedia’s new HQ in Hudson Yards.
The confirmation of the layoffs on Tuesday, first broken by Variety, comes after WarnerMedia parted ways with TruTV president Chris Linn, who exited May 16 after six years at the network. He had overseen a rebrand...

The executive exodus at TruTV continues.
Two more scripted executives — senior vp originals Angel Annussek and senior vp production Nancy McKenna — have departed the network. Sources say the duo accepted voluntary separation packages back in April and are remaining on board through the cable network's transition to a unified development team under Kevin Reilly.
Reilly was given oversight of TruTV earlier this month when he signed a new deal to remain at the helm of WarnerMedia's basic cable networks and its forthcoming streaming platform. As part of the three-year pact, Reilly was also given oversight of ...

Pilots only have a couple of jobs to do, and when they're not done or done poorly, a new series can lose its audience quickly.
In the case of the new Spectrum Originals series L.A.'s Finest, starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, the pilot was barely functional.
Because I wanted to get some notes down, I stuck around until the bitter end despite my better judgment, and that's just when things got interesting. So, there is a plus side.
Union and Alba starring together in an offshoot of Bad Boys II sounds, at first, like a no-brainer. But the pilot doesn't establish them as partners nearly as well as it should have.
Oh sure, Syd and Nancy have the names that make them an immediate pair, but the dialogue between them is almost too witty. Their jabs and barbs don't sound natural, and it's not altogether easy to believe them as partners.

On the one hand, it should come as no surprise that a TV spinoff of a 1990s action movie franchise is reverse engineered from a semi-successful TV spinoff of a 1980s action movie franchise. “L.A.’s Finest” looks a lot like Fox’s “Lethal Weapon” — there’s the loyal-but-edgy partner dynamic, the crazy action scenes, the hourlong, case-of-the-week structuring, the lead characters’ loner and family woman archetypes — even the spouse’s profession is the same. (Though “L.A.’s Finest” never explains how an Lapd detective and an assistant district attorney afford a freaking mansion near downtown Los Angeles — more on that later.)
But “Lethal Weapon” premiered on a well-established, freely accessible broadcast network. Its ratings success makes sense given the continued demand for procedural dramas from audiences who still tune-in for live TV (or keep up via their DVRs). “L.A.’s Finest” is launching Spectrum Originals, a...

When New York & Company approached Gabrielle Union to be their new brand ambassador and the face of her own clothing line, the actress reacted with “disbelief.”
“We are not supposed to be getting those offers, I’m not supposed to be having a career resurgence, my value isn’t supposed to be this high,” Union explained during her keynote conversation at the Variety Entertainment Marketing Summit presented by Deloitte at the NeueHouse in Hollywood. “I had to re-imagine my own self worth to step into this partnership with my full power and create the brand partnership of my dreams.”
Union, who has proven she can wear a multitude of hats as a producer, best-selling author, and judge on “America’s Got Talent,” said that she was shocked that a company were actively courting a “black woman from Omaha, Nebraska, who has fallen down and failed miserably very publicly,” as the face of their products.

If you thought Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba's TV spinoff of Bad Boys was going to be some sexy female cop fantasy, then think again. The first teaser for La's Finest starts off with Union and Alba in lingerie before they declare, "This is definitely not our show," and the footage abruptly transitions to the pair flipping criminals onto cement, firing guns, and racing through traffic on a motorcycle.
Spectrum's On Demand police drama, which credits both actresses as executive producers alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, centers on Union's Syd Burnett character from 2003's Bad Boys 2 and will follow her after she leaves the DEA and begins working as a detective in the Lapd. Syd then finds herself partnered with her total opposite, Nancy McKenna (Alba), who's described as "a working mom who can't help but look at Syd's freedom with some grass-is-greener envy."
