She’s lookin’ swell, fellas! Bette Midler’s anticipated Broadway revival of “Hello, Dolly!” broke the record for most first-day ticket sales for any Broadway show in history, totaling $9.08 million. Looks like Midler and the matchmaking Dolly are a match made in heaven. It was announced earlier this year that Midler will fill she shoes of Carol Channing (who won a Tony for originating the titular Dolly in 1964) and Barbra Streisand (who brought the role to the big screen in 1969) as the now-iconic matchmaker and New York socialite Dolly. Apparently we’re not the only ones who get giddy thinking about Midler bringing the house down with “When the Parade Passes By!” Under the direction of Jerry Zaks, Tony winner David Hyde Pierce will join Midler on the Shubert Theatre stage as Horace Vandergelder. It was announced last week that alongside this leading duo will be Kate Baldwin, Gavin Creel,...

The Escape Artist, Season 1, Episode 1, “Episode 1”
Written by David Wolstencroft
Directed by Brian Welsh
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on PBS
“It was a mistake; I just made sure they paid for it”
Legal crime dramas with ace lawyers as their lead are pretty easy to come by nowadays. Most don’t have David Tennant as that ace lawyer, though. The Escape Artist, airing for two weeks on Masterpiece Mystery, is a somewhat predictable thriller aided by great performances.
Tennant plays Will Burton, a talented junior barrister who’s never lost a case. He doesn’t particularly like the people he’s defending, but his career choice has been good to him. It’s given his family, sweet and understanding wife Kate (Ashley Jensen) and curious son Jamie (Gus Barry), a modern flat in the city and a quaint cottage in the country.

A nice hot bath will never be the same after viewing this chilling legal thriller that shows David Tennant at his best
David Tennant's character, Will Burton, leads a charmed existence. A brilliant, so far unbeaten defence barrister, he is The Escape Artist (BBC1), so called for his ability to get people off and out of jail. He's Houdini when everyone else is Paul Daniels. Generally adored too, except by the prosecution. And by Maggie Gardner (Sophie Okonedo), another barrister, who's been in Will's shadow since way back in law school. She's good too – not Paul Daniels, more like David Blaine. Or Cristiano Ronaldo to Burton's Lionel Messi in the Ballon d'Or of law.
Will's charmed life continues at home. There's a lovely wife, and a lovely son – though no Ballon d'Or there, I'm afraid, he misses an open goal in a school match (both parents are there of course,...

David Tennant is one of the finest actors on British shores – that much is plain. He brings a raw passion to his performances, consistently churning out excellent work in varied roles. I’d liken him to Daniel Day-Lewis’s TV equivalent. No, not in turns of gut-busting lunacy and supremely crazy method acting – I don’t think anyone else could do such a thing. It’s more in terms of quality – if you see Tennant’s name attached to a project, it’s pretty much a guarantee of that show’s excellence.
I’m aware the above can sound like a world’s tallest midget-esque description, in terms of damning with faint praise – after all, if Tennant was the acting colossus I’ve made him out to be, he’d surely have a more prolific film career beyond his excellent cameo as Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter, a fun...

David Tennant stars in a new trailer for BBC One drama The Escape Artist.
The Doctor Who and Broadchurch actor plays Will Burton, a talented barrister who has earned the nickname 'The Escape Artist' for his skill in getting his clients out of tight legal corners.
But when Burton acquits Liam Foyle (Toby Kebbell), the prime suspect in a horrific murder trial, he finds that his brilliance comes back to bite him with unexpected and chilling results.
Sophie Okonedo (The Slap) and Ashley Jensen (Extras) will also star in the new drama, written by Spooks creator David Wolstencroft.
"I wanted to write a thriller set in the legal world that's as much about those primal feelings as it is about the twists and turns of the case," Wolstencroft said.
"David Tennant is one of the most accomplished and iconic actors of his generation. I cannot wait to see him in Will's shoes.

The BBC has released a new trailer for their upcoming original drama schedule, giving sneak peeks at several shows, including the highly-anticipated Series 3 of "Sherlock." Missing from the video is any mention of "Doctor Who," though former star David Tennant and future Doctor Peter Capaldi are both present.
In one of the quick moments from "Sherlock," Benedict Cumberbatch's famous detective tells John Watson (Martin Freeman), "The thrill of the chase, the blood pumping through your veins. Just the two of us against the rest of the world." There's still no premiere date for "Sherlock."
Tennant can be seen as lawyer Will Burton in "The Escape Artist," while Capaldi is shown as Cardinal Richelieu in "The Musketeers," which will air in 2014. Other shows getting the spotlight include "The Great Train Robbery," "Quirke," "Ripper Street," "What Remains" and "By Any Means."

"White Collar" star Hilarie Burton may love her role on the USA series, but she still feels nostalgic for her "One Tree Hill" days.
"We were kids when we started," she told TV Guide of "One Tree Hill." "And now it's just this warm feeling of, 'You're the only other person on the planet that knows what it's like to go through that. I miss Chad."
Luckily, Burton has a new on-screen love interest on "White Collar" to tide her over: Matt Bomer. "Matt has been a wonderful second chapter for me because Chad and I had done everything together until I was 27 years old, and that was a lot of work. So to come back and have this new love interest that I have really wonderful chemistry with and who I really love as a person has been nice."
Will Burton have to say goodbye to her new leading man anytime soon?...

2012 seems to be the year of Tim Burton, with three projects carrying his name. He is directing two films - Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie - and producing one, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. His first film of the year, Dark Shadows, is coming out May 11th (so far with no poster, no trailer, few photos and little publicity other than the names of Tim Burton and star Johnny Depp). Burton was interviewed by horror magazine HorrorHound and discussed the film.
On why he took the film, Burton said, "The reason I liked Dark Shadows was that it was a weird family story. It just happened to have supernatural qualities to it." When asked if the film will be marketed as a comedy (similarly to Burton's Beetlejuice), Burton responded with confusion, "It's news to me... I always start things with the most serious of intentions. I sometimes find humour in things that aren't funny and vice versa.

Okay, I guess Depp looks as normal as he can when you consider that he’s playing a vampire in the 1970’s. Still, the promo image for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows does a fairly decent job of calming down the nerves when you consider what came before.
Remember that freaky pic of Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins where he seemed to be channeling the spirit of Michael Jackson? Well, we can put that image behind us now because this new photo shows us a Barnabas that looks – well – he still looks a little weird, but not as weird as before.
Burton can be expected to pull out all the stops when it comes to set design and costumes, and he doesn’t disappoint with Dark Shadows. I like how he seems to be sticking with the original look for vampire Collins, even having Depp do a hairstyle similar to...
