S-11, the Navy's shark/octopus genetic hybrid was supposed to be its next super weapon; but, instead, it got away from them during a Santa Monica show of force, swam south to Puerto Vallarta, and became the SyFy Channel original movie Sharktopus (2010): cheap, trashy and with a catchy theme song, directed by SyFy alumni Declan O'Brien. At Twitch, Todd Brown offered up the film's trailer and Twitch teammate Andrew Mack expressed his fun watching the film on screener, notably the Puerto Vallarta pool scene where Sharktopus's gun-for-hire Andy Flynn (Kerem Bürsin) holds his breath underwater, surfaces wearing a sombrero, and invites two lovely Latinas to tequila balls. What an entrance! The second in a series of research interviews with the hunks of horror--the first being Chris Divecchio (Wolf Moon)--Kerem Bürsin candidly discussed going the way of low-budget genre to further his acting career.

On October 2nd the third annual GoreZone International Film Festival got under way at Leicester Square’s Prince Charles Cinema; and for the first time ever, Dread was on the scene to check it out. Our report follows along with condensed reviews of six of the films shown over the weekend.
Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet, Breath of Hate, Hyenas, Cyrus: Mind of a Serial Killer, New Terminal Hotel, Darfur, and Devil's Playground are all included, but first a recap of the event and awards show.
In the face of fellow Leicester Square-based festival and horror heavy hitter, Film4 Frightfest, GoreZone (or Gz, as the magazine has rebranded) would appear to be the underdog. Having experienced the festival first-hand, however, it’s pleasing to discover a level of intimacy and audience connection that is easily lost amongst the hustle and bustle of many larger profile fests, bolstered by...

Everyone loves a good slasher movie. You know, where there’s a serial killer on the loose in a small town, and it’s our job to figure out “whodunit” with each member of the cast being killed off slowly one by one? Or when a husband/father goes stir crazy in a possessed mansion and starts killing his family? Unfortunately Wolf Moon is not one of those films. It’s painful, and not in the good way.
From the very beginning, you feel like you’re watching a student project. Not gritty and disturbingly realistic like Blair Witch, but amateurish, with an incoherent plot, obvious editing, laughable dialogue, and unfortunate acting. The title card comes up showing us the definition of the word cursed: “to be afflicted with, suffer from the coming down of calamity on someone by a spirit, deity, demon or one of the dead esp. from a desire for revenge,...

Where would the horror genre be without its libidinal icons? Its scream queens and handsome hunks? Along with gore and jump scares, sex has fueled the horror genre for generations. Just as characters from the vampire and werewolf mythos can "glamour" others--i.e., put a spell on others--so is the glamorous essential to the cinematic spell cast by these denizens of the dark, and nothing spells glamour like sex appeal. Is it any wonder that young breakout actors frequently find their first feature opportunities in independent horror films?
In the first of a series of research interviews, I'll be taking a look at the hunks of horror, starting off with one of the leaders of the pack, so to speak: Chris Divecchio. Divecchio's recent turn as Dan, the werewolf drifter in Dana Mennie's Dark Moon Rising (aka Wolf Moon, 2009) skillfully interprets the sensual tension between strength and vulnerability key to such characters.

Last Thursday night, at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, Horroryearbook's Gary G. and Andrew were On The Scene at the film's premiere. Written and directed by Dana Mennie, Wolf Moon is the tale of a small southwestern town terrorized by a rash of werewolf murders. It stars an impressive cast of genre veteran's such as Maria Conchita Alonso, Chris Mulkey, Sid Haig, Lin Shaye, and Billy Drago; alongside up and comers Max Ryan, Ginny Weirick and Chris Divecchio. Horroryearbook was excited about possibly meeting some of our genre heroes, like Mulkey, Shaye and Haig in person.

Fango got ahold of a new photo of one of the lycanthropes from the indie feature Dark Moon Rising, which is currently being sold for U.S. distribution by Centennial Pictures. Check out the image below.
Directed by Dana Mennie from a script he wrote with Ian Cook, Dark Moon Rising stars Ginny Weirick as Amy, a small-town girl who falls for Dan (Chris Divecchio), a drifter troubled by a hairy secret. The arrival of Bender (Max Ryan), who’s afflicted with the same curse and not so nice, leads to a confrontation that also involves Amy’s father, the local sheriff and others. The supporting cast includes genre vets Sid Haig, Lin Shaye and Billy Drago, along with Chris Mulkey and Maria Conchita Alonso; Alahouzos Studios FX did the creature and other special makeup work. Go here to view the trailer, and see Dark Moon Rising’s official website here,...

Vegas, baby! Even the city's airport is a gaudy slice of neon depravity.
Everywhere you look are slot machines, even in the bathroom. I'm sorry, but I already have my hands around a one-armed bandit. Don't need sirens and bells going off while I'm peeing. Anyway, it was around one in the afternoon, and Debi and I had just gotten to Sin City for our set visit to the new creature feature Dark Moon Rising, starring Max Ryan, Maria Conchita Alonso, Chris Mulkey, and Billy Drago; genre royalty extraordinaire Sid Haig and Lin Shaye; and newcomers Ginny Weirick and Chris Divecchio. From the second we were picked up from the airport, we knew there was going to be some mayhem afoot.
It was a two-hour ride out to the set in Beatty, Nevada. A little town nestled right between Death Valley and Area 51. If we got bored, we could always...

Out in the dark somewhere between Death Valley and Area 51, things were going bump in the night. Good thing for you, yours truly was there to investigate. Luckily the only real demons I’d have to face that night were of the windblown dust storm variety.
Recently I spent a night on the set of the new creature feature Dark Moon Rising, and so far I have to say this up-and-coming flick looks to be the real deal in terms of an indie horror showcase!
With an ensemble cast that includes Max Ryan, the still very-much-too-hot Maria Conchita Alonso, character actor aces Chris Mulkey and Billy Drago, genre vets Sid Haig and Lin Shaye, and newcomers Ginny Weirick and Chris Divecchio, Dark Moon Rising is sporting an impressive acting pedigree for a low budget genre flick.
Having been on the set, I can tell you this: Every bit of the...
