Stars: Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger, Eva Marie Saint | Written by Budd Schulberg | Directed by Elia Kazan
The opening tells us everything. We can visualise the shipyard before we’re shown a single image. Leonard Bernstein’s horn-heavy score sounds like the song of ships. It’s almost peaceful. Then a piano strikes like military drums.
1954’s On the Waterfront is a furious, blue-collar political drama, sandwiched between A Streetcar Named Desire (also starring Marlon Brando) and East of Eden in the filmography of its director Elia Kazan. The film takes place amongst the largely Irish American community of shipyard workers in New Jersey. Manhattan can often be seen, tantalisingly, across the water, visible through prison-like iron railings, or from the rooftop where Terry Malloy (Brando) cares for a dead man’s pigeons, like a form of repentance.
The dead man is Joey Doyle (Ben Wagner), murdered by local gangsters.

Director Ben Wagner does an impressive job of transforming crumbs into a full meal. Thanks to the miserable monetary restrictions we never see any outrageous special effects and we never see hordes of zombies breaking doors down in search of a meal. There arent any examples of mystifying makeup application or grand scenic shots. But what we do see is a character study that received quite a bit of care and genuine effort from two thespians on the rise.

Dead Within is a smallish indie horror feature from first time director Ben Wagner. The film takes place after a viral outbreak, which leaves the world in ruins. Set primarily in one set, Dead Within will release later this year, through Millenium Entertainment. A trailer for the film has just been released. For more on the story, a couple reside within an isolated cabin. Afraid to go outside and afraid to starve to death, this pair must struggle each day, to stay alive. Horrors lurk just outside their door and an airborne virus threatens to end their lives, or change them into something truly monstrous. The trailer for Dead Within is hosted below. The clip takes awhile to gain momentum. But when it does, film fans can see that many of the film's threats are hosted offscreen or within (psychological). Fans of indie horror features are encouraged to take a look below.

“I was repairing a window in my house. I was going to have to break it out of the frame and figured, why not film someone busting through it? I was going to just make a short film about a home invasion, but it quickly grew into something bigger,” director Ben Wagner tells us.
"The majority of Dead Within was shot over a 72-hour period. The actors developed the backstory and the first scenes that establish this new world. After shooting these initial scenes, the actors were isolated in the cabin where they improvised the second act. They did not know how the story would develop beyond the establishing scenes. If you were holed up in a cabin with your loved one during the apocalypse, what horrors would you find outside your long unopened door? That’s the question at the heart of writer/director Ben Wagner’s latest film, Dead Within, which Millennium Entertainment recently picked up.
A release date has not yet been set for this psychological horror film, but we’ll let Daily Dead readers know when one is determined. To get real results out of his actors, Ben Wagner filmed the movie in the tradition of The Blair Witch Project, placing stars Amy Cale Peterson and Dean Chekvala (both of whom helped write the script) in a real locked cabin wherein they had no idea what horror the filmmakers would throw at them. In addition to the film, a prequel comic illustrated by artist Alfonso Ruiz will soon be available, perhaps expanding on the apocalyptic events...

Up-and-comers are a dime a dozen in Hollywood; for every successful director, there are countless hopefuls waiting for their opportunity to shoot a scene, much less an entire film. But Ben Wagner has done both: his directorial debut, Southbounders, made the rounds at film festivals for more than two years, and he has since put together a number of other projects, most recently a short film entitled 6:00 in which a dirty cop fends off a phalanx of gang members in one glorious, unbroken shot.
