Vladimir Putin pulled off one of his most audacious pieces of stagecraft, attending a ballet with his rarely seen wife, then emerging smiling and announcing their marriage is over. The end of the marriage of the Russian president and Lyudmila Putina less than two months shy of their 30th anniversary came on state television after a Thursday evening that started out like a model of domestic contentment - a devoted husband taking his wife out for an artsy interlude. After the performance of Esmeralda at the Great Kremlin Palace, the two came into a luxurious room to speak to a reporter.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is back on the market, ladies. It was announced Thursday (June 6) that Putin and his wife of nearly 30 years, Lyudmila Putina, are seeking a divorce, the Associated Press reports. They broke the news during an address on state television.
"It was our joint decision," Putin says. He also points out, "We practically never saw each other." Lyudmila rarely joined her husband on the long trips he made as president, explaining, "I don't like publicity and flying is difficult for me."
Even without a marriage, the two are linked by their daughters, Maria and Yekaterina. "We will eternally be very close people," Lyudmila says before adding she's thankful for the support she received from Vladimir. The could married on July 28, 1983.
