One of the joys of being a long-time comics reader is coming across ideas that are equal degrees clever and obvious. It’s safe to say Jed MacKay’s idea to pit Moon Knight, the avatar of an Egyptian god, against a vampire pyramid scheme is one of those.
We saw Marc Spector and his gang of misfits from the Midnight Mission take on an Instagram influencer-esque vampire (peddling eternal undeath instead of essential oils) making a play for control of New York at night, and it was great fun. Turns out, though, that it was also the start of something very big. “As I was doing that, I’m like, ‘well, this could be bigger,’” MacKay tells Den of Geek. “So we do dispense with it in Moon Knight,...

When Secret Wars writer Jonathan Hickman relaunched the X-Men line of comic books by sending the heroes to Krakoa and making them immortal, there was one subtle change which generated a lot of discussion.
After decades of the trio being embroiled in a love triangle, it was strongly hinted that Wolverine, Cyclops, and Jean Grey's new life on the island nation had resulted in them taking their relationship down a very...modern...route.
Yes, the insinuation was that they were a "throuple," with Scott and Logan presumably sharing Jean (or vice versa).
The biggest hint in that respect came when the floorplan of the "Summer House" confirmed that their bedrooms were linked, with Jean's in the middle (something unique to their rooms only).
We're sure you don't need us to join the dots there, but Tom Brevoort, Executive Vice President and new X-Men Group Editor at Marvel Comics, has...

After spending years as a respected leader of the sovereign mutant nation Krakoa, Cyclops is back on the run. With Krakoa destroyed and humanity ready to oppress mutants again, Cyclops has gone back home to Alaska to refresh and regroup.
And yet, things have never been better for Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops. The upcoming From the Ashes relaunch will force the X-Men back into the world after the end of Krakoa in the Fall of X storyline, with a new X-Men book with Cyclops in the lead.
“We wanted to start with Cyclops and wanted to bring him back to Alaska,” X-Men writer Jed MacKay tells Den of Geek during an exclusive interview at SXSW. “And from there we started thinking what his mission would be moving forward because he’s Cyclops, he always has the mission.”

I must be honest; I’ve not been keeping up with Moon Knight in his own book at the moment. Only so many hours in the day after all. I love the character, though, and when I saw this Annual it grabbed my attention for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was just Halloween, and Moon Knight is the perfect character for this time of year. Secondly, it guest stars Werewolf by Night, an even more suitable character for this time of year. Lastly, I liked the symmetry.
These two characters have a history that goes way back, 50 years in fact, all the way to Werewolf by Night #32 in 1972. Over the years a real love/hate relationship has blossomed, mainly in the various Moon Knight books. Nice to see writer Jed MacKay and Editor Tom Brevoort love their history.

Fantastic Four No. 1: Panel by Panel
By Chip Kidd, Geoff Spear, Mark Evanier, and Tom Brevoort
Abrams ComicsArts, 240 pages, $40
The first title to usher in the Marvel Age of Comics has been previously annotated in other books, most notably one five years ago. But here, designer Chip Kidd does his usual in-depth look with incredible blow-ups of each panel of each page of the story that introduced us to Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Johnny Storm, and Benjamin J. Grimm.
The vast majority of the book is filled with these detailed looks, shot by Geoff Spear from a 1961 copy of the comic. It’s an interesting look, forcing you to examine things in extreme close-up, so much so that some panels lose detail in the spine.
It’s all too much and somewhat overwhelms you visually. And then, when we get to the meat of the book, Tom Brevoort’s analytical breakdown of the comic,...

Marvel is planning to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Fantastic Four No. 1 with an anniversary tribute featuring some of the team’s greatest stories reimagined by prominent comics artists of today.
The Fantastic Four Anniversary Tribute #1 comes in the wake of similar projects featuring the X-Men and Captain America.
Sixty years ago, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created what was billed as The World’s Greatest Comics Magazine with the release of Fantastic Four #1. Now, Marvel creators will pay tribute to that moment by reinterpreting, page by page, the story from that inaugural release, as well as the wedding of team members Reed Richards and Sue Storm.
“It’s the 60th Anniversary of the Fantastic Four—and that means it’s a good time to assemble the best and brightest that Marvel has to offer to joust with the King,” said a statement from Tom Brevoort, the executive editor.

After an extra month of waiting, we’re finally at the fireworks factory that is Marvel’s Loki. Tom Hiddleston returns, using his time-travel cameo in Avengers: Endgame to sidestep the fact that Loki died a heroic death in Avengers: Infinity War. Despite sneaking away with the Tesseract in a revised version of the first Avengers movie, things don’t work out so well for our easily-annoyed villain.
And now…he’s stuck running suicide missions with the Time Variance Authority. What a way for a god to spend his days.
The show seems to be making its way towards a buddy cop route with the addition of Owen Wilson. It’s the kind of casting that has you saying, “Wait, is this Owen Wilson’s first time in one of these? How has it taken so long for Owen Wilson to get a role in a Marvel movie?”

Among this overwhelming tidal wave of Disney project news that consumed us all Thursday night, we got to see the new trailer for Loki, which will be hitting Disney+ this coming May. As shown, this Loki isn’t the one who got choked to death in the opening moments of Avengers: Infinity War, but the Loki appearing during the Time Heist in Avengers: Endgame. After the events of the first Avengers went awry, that version of Loki was able to sneak away with the Tesseract and create a tangent universe.
And now…he’s stuck running suicide missions with the Time Variance Authority. What a way for a god to spend his days.
Getting away from Tom Hiddleston, the trailer also makes everyone realize, “Wait, is this Owen Wilson’s first time in one of these? How has it taken so long for Owen Wilson to get a role in a Marvel movie?...

The seventh episode of Marvel 616, the Disney+ documentary series promoting the Marvel brand, is titled “The Marvel Method.” It references the pioneering shift in comics work production that came about at the dawn of the Marvel era of comics, and is ostensibly about the fun, wacky way that Marvel comics get made today. What it actually portrays is a high-stress, broken production process.
Also, nothing that happens in it is consistent with the traditional Marvel Method.
The episode opens with Dan Slott, writer of a near-record 180 issues of Spider-Man comics, and currently Marvel’s Fantastic Four writer, sitting down with 12 weeks of lead time to write his first issue of Iron Man 2020. The writer gets one sentence into the script before being distracted by a Twitter notification. The episode goes on to detail the painstaking process that the Marvel team undergoes to put the first issue of Iron Man 2020 on shelves.

Marvel Comics' "Timeless" variant covers, by illustrator Alex Ross, showcases portraits of 'Captain America', 'Iron Man', 'Storm', 'Scarlet Witch', 'Mr. Fantastic', 'Ghost Rider', 'Silver Surfer', 'She-Hulk' and a whole lot more:
"Nobody else embodies the term 'Timeless' quite as well as Alex does," said Marvel's Tom Brevoort.
"His work makes people relate to these fantastical characters in an entirely new way...
"...they become plausible and real without giving up...
"...their larger-than-life qualities in the process.
"He's also just about the hardest-working guy in the business--his output, given its quality, is truly staggering..."
"Marvel allowed me to do a series...
"...of full-length portraits of their most well-known heroes," Ross said.
"I wanted to illustrate timeless versions of these characters...
"...and Marvel fully supported me in that passion.
"It was an honor to be asked to create this artwork for a mural in Marvel’s offices."

One of the basic questions that comes with a fictional world is, “If this exists, then what else?” We accept the Green Goblin because we accept Spider-Man. The Joker is an extension of Batman. If there’s a Green Lantern Corps, then surely there are other colors. Dr. Manhattan may be the only super-being of his world, but the science behind him can be used and abused.
Now Mark Waid and Neal Adams are asking the same kind of question about Galactus. If Galactus exists, then so should the Antithesis. While details are scarce, there appears to be some kind of anti-Galactus and we’ll be seeing his story begin in Fantastic Four: Antithesis #1, coming out in August.
Mark Waid has written a ton of comics over the years and his take on Fantastic Four with the late-great Mike Wieringo is considered defining for Marvel Comics’ First Family. What’s...

Us old fan boys do tend to do a lot of moaning about some of the comics put out these days,, but now and again a little nugget is thrown up that seemingly all fans, young and old, can enjoy. I’ve been so excited waiting for the Marvels Snapshots launch. The original Marvels series, by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, enjoys something of a well deserved legendary status these days, and took the simple idea of using a normal person to document the Marvel Universe. That time round it was a photographer, Phil Sheldon, witness to some of the iconic moments in Marvel history. Marvels: Eye of the Camera followed a few years later, not as good but still a fun return to the concept. Now we have a similar return, but this time looking at different eras and characters every issue.

With 2019 now coming to a close – I know, it’s hard to believe – the more avid collectors among you are likely beginning to plan out which comic books you’ll be adding to your pull list come 2020. And while there are certainly a lot of good options already beginning to emerge, one of the most enticing comes from the House of Ideas.
Yes, as you surely know by now, Marvel have begun teasing the major story arc that is Iron Man 2020. Essentially, it’ll see Tony Stark’s brother, Arno Stark, stepping into the armor following a pivotal development involving the hero who everyone seems to love 3000. And if you simply can’t wait until the New Year to learn more about what’s coming our way, we’ve got some good news for you, as the company has now offered up the first trailer for the book.

Iron Man 2020 launches in January from Dan Slott, Christos Gage, and Pete Woods.
Tony Stark: Iron Man has been hinting at two things for almost its entire run: something bad is going to happen to Tony, and the robots are coming for us. In 2020, Marvel is going to look at both outcomes with Iron Man 2020, the next step in the story Dan Slott has been telling with Tony since last year. Slott and Christos Gage (the incredible G.I. Joe: Cobra) are writing, with Pete Woods (Robin) on art duties.
The new series starts with Arno, Tony's brother, in the armor. Conveniently enough, Arno is Also the Iron Man from 2020 who went back in time to 1984's Machine Man #2. While there, he was mostly an amoral jerk, collecting bounties and generally smarming all over the place. He was, however, drawn by Herb Trimpe and Barry Windsor-Smith, so...

Those of you who’ve been keeping up with comic book news this week should be aware of how Marvel dropped that cryptic teaser for Iron Man 2020 a few days ago. We all said goodbye to a true superhero this week and Marvel Studios is paying tribute with a touching video that celebrates the legacy he leaves behind. The tribute - posted on Tuesday from Marvel Entertainment's official YouTube page - features footage of Lee throughout the years, as well as interviews with those who are part of the Marvel Comics brand.
Lee, who died at age 95 on Monday, co-created some of the most well-known comic heroes in the world and was one of the most influential voices in the comic book industry. Working with various artists, including frequent partner Jack Kirby, Lee co-created characters such as the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and more. As the tribute explains, Lee's comic creations did more than just introduce exciting characters and storylines to Marvel Comics.

Stan Lee was a unique creative force and his characters are famous worldwide, adored by practically every living generation and currently the biggest box office draw on the planet. With his death yesterday, many are taking stock of the total creative output in his lifetime, concluding that perhaps not since Walt Disney has one man’s creative vision influenced the world of entertainment so greatly. And now, in one of the best tributes I’ve seen to date, Marvel Entertainment has released a video explaining exactly what he meant to the company.
Opening with footage of Stan Lee speaking to the camera in 1968 (it’s surreal seeing him this young), we gradually move through photographs and videos of his life while contemporary forces at Marvel talk about their experiences with Lee, including Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, Senior Vice President Tom Brevoort, President of Marvel Entertainment Dan Buckley and Sana Amanat,...

The year is 2134, and the legacy of Captain America lives on…not only shaping the future of the country, but the future of Steve Rogers’ family! This May, series writer Mark Waid will be joined by Leonardo Romero (Hawkeye) and a host of superstar guest artists such as Adam Hughes, Jg Jones, Chris Sprouse and Howard Chaykin, as Captain America’s storied history in the Marvel Universe is spotlighted in an all-new adventure told through the eyes of Steve Rogers’ grandson. But this seemingly perfect utopia isn’t exactly the America Steve Rogers dreamed of…

This June, The Sentry is returning to the Marvel Universe, along with writer Jeff Lemire (Moon Knight) and Kim Jacinto (Avengers: No Surrender) in an all-new story!
“Having made his dramatic and unexpected return in Donny Cates’ Doctor Strange story, it was a no-brainer for us to move ahead on an actual Sentry series! And it was my great fortune that Jeff Lemire was eager to lend his talents to the project, as it will live in the sort of off-kilter headspace that his Moon Knight and Black Hammer projects exist in,” said Svp and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “And Kim Jacinto, fresh off of Avengers: No Surrender is the perfect artist to help visualize the worlds of this shining champion who’s also got a dark underbelly.”

New series. New directions. New beginnings. It all kicks off this July with The Life of Captain Marvel #1 – from the creative team of Margaret Stohl and Carlos Pacheco.
“Life presents the origins of Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel in one place, and in a way we haven’t seen before,” said Svp and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Margie’s pulled together all of the strands of Carol’s backstory to craft a tale that will no doubt become a seminal story about the character, and set her in place for her role in Avengers and elsewhere throughout the Marvel Universe.”
“It’s nothing you’ll expect and nothing you’ve seen happen but there will be parts of her life that change the context of what you’ve seen before, so it’s telling the other side of the story, of how she came to be,” Stohl said of Carol’s new story.

With relaunches already announced for both Avengers and Venom, you probably figured that more #1’s would be named as part of Marvel’s upcoming “Fresh Start” initiative. Actually, the two series we’re talking about today come as a no-brainer, with both headlining heroes being recent box office successes.
Of course, with Black Panther becoming a powerhouse at theaters the world over, T’Challa was among the first to spring to mind when it came to heroes to be given this treatment. And with such mainstream exposure being enjoyed, one can only hope that translates into more interest in his comics.
When it comes to who’ll be at the helm, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates will still be the guiding hand, with Daniel Acuna tapped to provide art and covers. Normally, you’d figure a clean slate to be in order, but Coates has garnered so much praise for his work...

With a solo Venom movie finally being made a reality this coming fall, it only makes sense that Marvel place as much focus as they can on one of their most popular anti-heroes throughout 2018. And with a boatload of curious new readers sure to venture out to comic shops and bookstores, it’s not a bad idea in the slightest to provide them with a friendly jumping on point.
Much like the recently announced new Avengers series, the House of Ideas will be rolling Venom back to issue #1, which you may have seen coming. Set to be written by Donny Cates (God Country) with art and covers provided by Ryan Stegman (Superior Spider-Man), this looks to be a creative team capable of making new fans and satisfying old ones. In fact, we invite you to look at some of Stegman’s pencils for the first issue in the gallery below.

Whenever the next big superhero movie comes around, you tend to see the comic book publishers place more focus on characters set to appear on the silver screen. In fact, the House of Ideas fully intends on starting 2018 with a bang, thanks in no small part to Avengers: No Surrender.

Debuting in the pages of Avengers #675, the Avengers-verse changing Avengers: No Surrender storyline is a weekly saga that unites the casts and creative teams of three titles into an epic tale of heroic action, jaw-dropping cliffhangers, and drastic adventures! The Avengers, Uncanny Avengers and U.S. Avengers come together in a powerhouse of an event that will be unleashed in a story as, and I quote: “spectacular and epic as the Marvel Universe itself”. Hmmm, where have we heard That before?
Featuring one of Marvel’s biggest collaborations to date, each issue will be co-written by superstar writers Mark Waid, Al Ewing and Jim Zub with art by Pepe Larraz for the first month,...

For some time now, we’ve been talking about the Marvel Legacy one-shot slated to arrive in comic shops this September and understandably so. Spanning fifty pages, this oversized issue set to be written by Jason Aaron (Mighty Thor) and illustrated by Esad Ribic (Secret Wars) should not only make for a definitive read, but will also set the tone for the next year of story arcs planned by the House of Ideas.
One aspect about this standalone tale that caught our attention is that it’ll reveal the group that essentially served as the first Avengers, whom existed back in 1,000,000 B.C., to be exact. While it’s currently unknown if they’ll come across anyone resembling Raquel Welch, Marvel has released a pretty nifty trailer in the interim in order to get us geeked.

Now that we have the epic battle that was Steve Rogers versus Steve Rogers which took place in Secret Empire #10 behind us, we can look forward to something a little more uplifting. As it turns out, it’ll come in the form of a Generations one-shot that’ll unite Captain Americas Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson. Yes, after a year or so of all that Hydra jazz, the American Dream is finally alive and well.
By now, you’re probably aware of what the Generations concept is, but just in case you’re not, we’ll give you the gist of it. Basically, fan favorites past and present have been brought together via the Vanishing Point, thereby allowing team-ups of heroes who’ve adopted various mantles to take place. Aside from the one being discussed today, other noteworthy one-shots in this line include Thors Jane Foster and Odinson, Wolverines Logan...

By now, those of you who closely follow news related to comic book movies are well aware of how most Marvel characters fall under Disney’s “Marvel Studios” umbrella when it comes to the world of cinema, with Fox still laying claim to properties like X-Men and Fantastic Four. But what you may not be aware of is the strange saga that’s endured for the past few years that’s seen the publisher sideline some of its most beloved characters due to who’s in charge of film distribution.
At a time when you can walk down a toy aisle at any given retailer and see a myriad of Marvel action figures, odds are you won’t see much of the X-Men or Fantastic Four. Basically, this is a conscious effort to steer consumers of various age groups toward characters appearing in Disney movies. Sure, you may come across...

Marvel Comics' "Marvel Legacy" #1, written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Esaid Ribi, with a cover by Alex Ross, is set in 1.000,000 BC, introducing superhero characters that formed the 'Marvel Universe':
"'Marvel Legacy' #1 isn't simply a history lesson," said editor Tom Brevoort. "Rather, it's the starting gun to a bevy of mysteries, secrets and revelations that will reverberate across the 'Marvel Universe'...No character, no franchise will be untouched by the game-changing events that play out across its pages..."
"'Marvel Legacy' #1 will present all fans, new readers and current readers, the very best jumping on point in the history of comics," said Axel Alonso, Marvel's editor-in-chief. "What Jason and Esad have crafted is more grand and more gargantuan than anything we have ever seen before and introduces concepts and characters the 'Marvel Universe' has never encountered.
"Fans are going to witness an all-new look at the 'Marvel Universe' starting at one of the earliest moments in time carried all the way into present day. Not only will this be the catalyst for Marvel evolving and moving forward, but expect it to be the spark that will ignite the industry as a whole..."

“An Asgardian titan. A Wakandan warrior bred to be a king. The very first Sorcerer Supreme.”
When you read a teaser as cryptic and powerful as that, you know you’re in for something special. But when you also consider that the story its hyping up will be written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Esad Ribic, with a double gatefold cover provided by the legendary Joe Quesada, then you truly know the House of Ideas isn’t messing around. Such is the case with Marvel Legacy #1, a monumental one-shot slated to hit shelves this fall that intends on showing us how it’s “all connected.”
I say that because the publisher intends on taking us back to 1,000,000 BC, when “when iconic torch-bearers such as Odin, Iron Fist, Star Brand, Ghost Rider, Phoenix, Agamotto, and Black Panther come together for the startling origin of the Marvel Universe.” From the sound of that,...
