Today, Netflix announced that the series America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will premiere this summer on the streaming service. The series follows the 2023-24 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders squad from start to finish — kicking off at auditions and training camp and continuing all the way through the NFL season.
From Emmy Award-winning director Greg Whiteley and the team behind Cheer and Last Chance U, the seven-episode series will give viewers unfiltered access to this iconic team and franchise.

Led by longtime director Kelli Finglass, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders open their doors to document the personal stories behind the uniforms, revealing the drive, hustle, and drama among the cheerleaders and coaches. For many, making the team is a dream—but that’s only the beginning.
The seven-episode series is a production of One Potato Productions and Boardwalk Pictures in association with Campfire Studios.

The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders once again will be the subject of an unscripted series — this time at Netflix.
The streamer says its show, titled America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, will premiere in the summer and counts Cheer and Last Chance U’s Greg Whiteley among its executive producers (he also directs). The Netflix series will debut some two-and-a-half years after the long-running Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team ended after 16 seasons on CMT.
Where the latter show often had the structure of a competition series, America’s Sweethearts — at least based on a brief teaser — looks to bring more of a polished, behind-the-scenes feel to its seven episodes. The show will chronicle the 2023-24 season for the cheerleaders and will “document the personal stories behind the uniforms,” according to Netflix’s description.

Hunter Schafer and Noomi Rapace will star in “Palette,” a psychological horror film directed by Zach Strauss (“Smilf”) in his feature debut.
Strauss penned the script for “Palette,” which was featured on the 2023 Black List. He is also a writer on Spike Lee’s upcoming feature “Da Understudy.”
“Palette” follows Dolly (Schafer), “a woman suffering from extreme synesthesia, a rare condition where she is able to hear colors,” according to the film’s synopsis. She is soon “recruited into a secretive, cult-like industry of color design, uncovering the dark reality of what it takes to make the world’s greatest hues.”
Rapace is set to play Latrice, the company’s enigmatic executive. Frankie Shaw is also in the cast as Sidney, Dolly’s cutthroat rival.
Schafer is starring in another horror film, Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo,” which is set to have its world premiere at Berlin Film Festival this month.

Exclusive: Prime Video has greenlit The Money Game, a docuseries tracking the revolutionary impact of “name, image and likeness” (Nil) policies on college sports.
Campfire Studios, Axios Media, and Shaquille O’Neal’s Jersey Legends, a division of Authentic Studios, are producers on the project, which will stream exclusively on Prime. It follows a number of notable sports docuseries and doc features on Prime Video, including Coach Prime, an inside look at Colorado’s football program under Deion Sanders, and Kelce, about Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce. On a broader level, sports has become a cornerstone of the Amazon-owned streaming service, notably NFL Thursday Night Football. That regular viewership for live sports provides opportunities for related shoulder programming.

Among other consumer benefits, one major upside to the increasing niche-ification of popular culture has been the continuing emergence of esoteric micro-genres of film and TV. Twenty years ago, you might not necessarily think of “horror documentaries” as its own subgenre. Sure, there were documentaries that maybe fell a little more on the creepy/unsettling side, but it was rare that a nonfiction film would be tailored to appeal to a horror-first genre audience. Now, of course, things are different. In recent years, a robust tradition of terrifying nonfiction films have emerged, many as terrifying – or even more eerie – than their traditional narrative counterparts.

Produced by Ross Dinerstein’s Campfire Studios, Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions, David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants Incorporated and Fifth Season, the film reps the first doc authorized by the Kaufman estate.
Fifth Season (“Being Mary Tyler Moore”) is fully financing the project, which will be overseen by Mary Lisio, executive vice president of non-scripted and documentary, and produced in partnership with the Andy Kaufman estate.
“I’ve always loved Andy because he was able to elicit such emotional reactions to his performances by using both the poignant and the absurd to keep his audience off balance. I hope we can honor his legacy in that way with our film,” Tweel said.

The fascination over American Gladiators isn’t over just yet: Three weeks after ESPN aired 30 for 30: The American Gladiators Documentary, Netflix is now shining a spotlight on the inimitable ’80s competition show that gave us Nitro, Gemini and thrilling jousts with what looked like giant, padded Q-tips.
Like ESPN’s penetrative two-parter from director Ben Berman (The Amazing Jonathan Documentary), the new Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators (dropping June 28 on Netflix) reminds us that TV’s first big reality show stars weren’t privileged women who throw wine in fits of rage. They were pumped-up athletes who donned patriotic colors while playing Goliath to some poor civilian’s David in a makeshift battledome.
But while ESPN’s documentary from Vice Media focuses more of its narrative on Johnny Ferraro, the infamous figurehead behind the memorable franchise, Muscles & Mayhem keeps the attention on the gladiators and how,...

Campfire, a producer of scripted and non-scripted content, has been on a tear.
The company debuted three films at this year’s SXSW, the buzzy documentaries “WeWork: Or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn,” “Hysterical,” and “The Lost Sons,” and also fielded “A Glitch in the Matrix,” which scored rave reviews at Sundance. All told, the company will have nearly a dozen movies and shows scheduled to premiere in 2021, a remarkable burst of productivity given that Covid-19 has slowed production for the past 12 months.
“The pandemic didn’t really impede our growth,” says Ross M. Dinerstein, the company’s founder and CEO. “We were able to pivot quickly and figure out how to move much of our post-production remotely.”
The explosion of content is also being fueled by a key investor. In 2019, Wheelhouse Group, the media and investment firm created by Brent Montgomery and late night host Jimmy Kimmel,...

The Sundance Film Festival only just announced its lineup on Tuesday, but we already have a sale. Magnolia has acquired the worldwide rights to “A Glitch In The Matrix,” a sci-fi documentary from director Rodney Ascher that is set to premiere in the Midnight section of the festival.
Ascher is the director of “Room 237” and “The Nightmare,” and his latest film examines the idea that maybe we’re all living in a simulation as presupposed by “The Matrix.”
Magnolia will launch “A Glitch In The Matrix” in theaters and on demand on February 5, immediately following its Sundance premiere. This is Ascher’s third film to premiere at the festival.
Ascher’s film poses a red pill/blue pill scenario and asks the question, “What if we are living in a simulation, and the world as we know it is not real?”
To tackle this wild idea, Ascher uses a...

Stephen King loves to write about killer cars, and producers love to adapt those tales into movies. The latest is Mile 81, based on a King short story about a station wagon that eats people (I’m serious). The adaptation will be produced by Ross M. Mile 81, a Stephen King novella about a killer car, is another movie project on the growing docket of adaptations of the author’s work.
One may be forced to feign surprise when hyping the news that another Stephen King literary work – this time novella Mile 81 – is getting a movie adaptation.
Indeed, the entertainment industry’s “Kingaissance” that, for the past few years, has been flooding studio backlogs across the film and television industries, can add yet another entry to the list of developing projects with a film adaptation of Mile 81, reports Deadline. The King story, which first arrived as a 2011 novella, was later released in the author's 2015 The Bazaar of Bad Dreams short story collection.
A simple plot description of Mile 81 might make one dismiss it as “the other Stephen King story about an evil car.” However, unlike Christine, the popular 1983 novel and same-year film about a malevolently possessed 1958 Plymouth Fury,...
