George R. R. Martin’s ‘A Song Of Ice And Fire’ sequence of fantasy novels were one of literature’s best kept secrets for nearly fifteen years… that is, until the premier episode of HBO’s cable television adaptation Game Of Thrones was broadcast in April 2011 and blew poor George’s comfortable life to smithereens.
There’s no question that Martin’s been fortunate with HBO’s treatment of his novels – and, by extension, so have his fans. Game Of Thrones has only started significantly deviating from the story being told in Martin’s ongoing novels in the latest season: True Blood only used Charlaine Harris’ ‘Southern Vampire Mysteries’ as a starting point, and Dexter treated Jeff Lindsay’s original novels more as a loose guideline.

Three images have popped up from EW offering us an early look at Shadowhunters, the upcoming ABC Family show based off of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments book series.
The pics, which are from the second and third episode of the 13 episode first season, feature Clary, played by Katherine McNamara, and Jace (Dominic Sherwood), as well as Alec (Matthew Daddario) and Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia), who looks amazing.
People may recall 2013’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie, an adaptation of Clare’s first novel in Mortal Instruments, which did not perform. McG is directing the first episode and that’s not really a deterrent to me, I really dig Supernatural and Chuck, and McG shot the latter’s pilot.
Personally, I think ABC Family really gets current marketing and the youth/tween and I think they can get something out of Mortal Instruments/Shadowhunters that may have been too...

Studio Babelsberg’s co-production of the upcoming Captain America sequel and Steven Quale’s action film The Lake are to benefit from new German funding specifically targeted at VFX studios.
The new opportunities came after the Munich-based regional film fund Fff Bayern extended its dedicated international co-production funding programme to include support for VFX producers based in Bavaria.
According to Ilse Aigner, Bavaria’s Minister for Economics and Media, Energy and Technology, the additional funding would support local companies “in this difficult international competitive market”, bolster Bavaria’s position as a VFX hub and, simultaneously, benefit the overall sector as the measure will bring additional productions to Bavaria.
VFX studio Trixter was awarded $495,000 (€450,000) for the virtual shoot of Captain America: Civil War in order to begin work on the production from the end of August.

Jon Favreau and Smallville duo Al Gough and Miles Millar will produce the show, which is based on the 20-strong series of novels (there has been one graphic novel also - The Dark Wraith Of Shannara - published back in 2008) in Terry Brooks' Shannara saga. The story is set after the destruction of our civilization in the "great wars", with the world reverting to a medieval state and magic re-emerging. Many of the protagonists in the story are descended from the Eleven noble family of Shannara. Apparently the TV show will begin by adapting the second novel in the series, The Elfstones Of Shannara. The first two episodes will be directed by Tmnt's Jonathan Liebesman.

George Clooney is rejecting the apology of the Daily Mail for what he says was inciting religious hatred over his upcoming wedding. Why is the affable Clooney taking such a hard line? Because he says they know they’re lying about how the article happened. “The coverup is always worse. In this case, the Daily Mail has printed an apology for insinuating religious tensions where there are none. In the apology, managing editor Charles Garside claims that the article was ‘not a fabrication,’ but ‘based the story on conversations with senior members of the Lebanese community.’ The problem is that none of that is true. The original story never cites that source, but instead goes out of its way to insist on four different occasions that “a family friend” spoke directly to the Mail.

MTV is looking to get into the Game of Thrones business. The Wrap reports thatthe network has made a full-season commitment to a live-action television show based on Terry Brooks' Shannara fantasy series. Back in December, it was reported that Iron Man director Jon Favreau would direct however, that appears to not be the case as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles helmer, Jonathan Liebesman will direct the first two episodes. Favreau is still working on the project as an executive producer so it's not out of the realm of possibility that he'll direct one of the other episodes. The first season has received a 10 episode commitment. The series is a very traditional sword and sorcery, fantasy series - with an added twist that the novels are set in a post-apocalyptic, medieval setting of a far-flung future where the Earth has been radically altered due to Chemical Warfare. In this setting,...

AMC has given a direct-to-series order to "Badlands," a new martial arts drama that has absolutely nothing to do with the classic Terrence Malick film featured in the picture accompanying this story. Actually, "Badlands" is based very loosely on the Chinese tale "Journey to the West." AMC describes thusly: "In a land controlled by feudal barons, 'Badlands' tells the story of a great warrior and a young boy who embark on a journey across a dangerous land to find enlightenment." The "Badlands" order is for six, one-hour episodes that will premiere either in late 2015 or early 2016. The project comes from writer/producers Al Gough and Miles Millar. For the purposes of the release, AMC has their credits as "Shanghai Noon" and "Smallville," but for purposes of today's news cycle, Gough and Millar are also behind MTV's Terry Brooks adaptation "Shannara," which received a straight-to-series 10-episode order this morning.

Terry Brooks' beloved Shannara series has been on the table for adaptation for years now, but MTV have picked up the gauntlet, green-lighting a 10 episode first season. I can only assume the decision to finally invest in the sprawling post-apocalyptic/Fantasy series is due to the popularity of HBO's Game of Thones, but who cares, I honestly never thought we'd see this day.
Shannara is unique to epic fantasy in that it's still earth as we know it, but the world is a post-nuclear future version of Earth where humans have mutated into elves and dwarves and the land mass of the planet is all swapped around.
Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: La, Wrath of the Titans, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) has been tapped to direct the first two episodes while Iron Man's John Favreau will produce.

MTV kicked off its Television Critics Association press tour day on Friday (July 11) with a big series pickup, a big renewal and a slew of premiere dates. The renewal is, if my Twitter feed is any indication, an important one: "Catfish: The TV Show" has been picked up for a fourth season. The adaptation of the hit Sundance documentary, "Catfish: The TV Show" is Wednesday's top original cable series among viewers 12-34. Shouldn't the ongoing existence of "Catfish" make it harder and harder for the obfuscations necessary for the ongoing existence of "Catfish"? I would thing so. But I would apparently be wrong. MTV also gave a series order to "Shannara," based on the Terry Brooks fantasy series. "Smallville" veterans Al Gough and Miles Millar are serving as writers and executive producers on the 10-episode first season, with Jonathan Liebesman ("Wrath of the Titans") directing the first two episodes. Given the popularity of HBO's Game of Thrones, I'm surprised more popular fantasy series haven't been scooped up already. I suppose budgets of these types of things are a concern, as there have been plenty of fantasy-themed shows in the past, but without strong writing and direction, as well as competent effects, it comes off as super cheesy. With that in mind, it may surprise you to know that author Terry Brooks is the second-highest selling author of the fantasy genre (that is living),...

Ridley Scott Goes Young Adult With 'Fae' & Jon Favreau To Direct Pilot For Fantasy Series 'Shannara'
Young people have disposable incomes. Lots of it. So is it any wonder that Hollywood is eager to keep the Ya adaptation train rolling? Even though for every "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games" smash hit there have been roughly two or three more big misses, it seems the dice will keep being played and today two more projects are brewing. First up, Ridley Scott has snatched up the rights to "Fae" by Colet and Jasmine Abedi. The first in a trilogy (of course), the story centers on sixteen year old Caroline Ellis who is tossed into a "battle fated for centuries between the Dark and Light Fae, forcing her to confront who she is and discover whether her tumultuous relationship with Devilyn Reilly, who’s battling the power of the Dark within him, will destroy them both along with humanity." Yeah, basically the same plot as every other Ya book.

If HBO can adapt George R. R. Variety is reporting that Terry Brooks' "Shannara" books have been acquired for a potential TV adaptation by Sonar Entertainment in partnership with Farah Films, with Brooks to serve as an executive producer. Set in the far future, after civilization has been destroyed in a series of wars, leaving the planet in a medieval state in which magic has become possible and there are elves, trolls, dwarves and such, the Shannara books are fantasy with a touch of sci-fi. Brooks has written around two dozen novels set in the universe, 20 of which have ended up bestseller lists, so this material is not short on fans. The TV adaptation...

Warner Bros. is hustling and bustling on the business front this week — and it’s only Monday! For one, Variety tells us that the studio has, yes, bought yet another fantasy story for the film treatment; this time around, it’s Magic Kingdom of Landover, based on Terry Brooks‘ Magic Kingdom for Sale — Sold! Akiva Goldsman‘s Weed Road Pictures and Grade A Entertainment will produce the picture, which Universal took an unsuccessful stab at back in 2005; Stephen Sommers was tapped to direct at the time, though I imagine he’s gone by this point. (Don’t complain.)
The book, first in a series of six, centers on “a recently widowed lawyer who finds an advertisement in an upscale Christmas catalog claiming to offer a magical kingdom for $1 million by a man named Mr. Meeks. Warner Bros. Pictures has optioned the film rights to Terry Brooks' "Magic Kingdom of Landover" book series says Variety.
Based on the first book in the series, 1986's "Magic Kingdom for Sale -- Sold!," the story follows a recently widowed lawyer who finds an advertisement in an upscale Christmas catalog claiming to offer a magical kingdom for $1 million by a man named Mr. Meeks.
After he purchases it, he discovers he must unite the kingdom's denizens and creatures to stop an evil demon bent on destroying the realm.
Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road Pictures, Andy Cohen's Grade A Entertainment, and Weed Road's Kerry Foster and Alex Block will produce.
Universal previously tried to adapt the property back in 2005 with a script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel while Stephen Sommers was attached to direct.
