- He had two sons and a daughter. Both of his sons, John and James, enlisted in the British Royal Navy and joined the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. John died in 1975 from a fall and James in 2024 from mesothelioma.
- In 1964, he was appointed the position of Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff for Intelligence. He retired from the Royal Navy in 1967.

- In 1939 with James Troup and John Henry Godfrey, he helped establish the Operatonal Intelligence Centre.
- He and his brother, Norman Denning, signed up for the Royal Navy after World War I. He served in Singapore in the 1930s. In 1937, he was appointed a position to the British Naval Intelligence Division.
- He was son of Charles Denning and Clara Denning. Brother of Alfred Thompson 'Tom' Denning, Reginald Denning, and Norman Denning.
- He was also awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1945 King's Honours List for his services during World War II.
- He was awarded the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1963 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to the military. He was also awarded the Companion of the Order of Bath in the 1961 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to the military.
