The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and ABC are determined to present a shorter Oscarcast on Feb. 24. One of their ideas: present several below-the-line awards during commercial breaks.
Apparently they think audiences don’t care about those categories. Here’s a better idea: Explain this work to TV audiences, and get them involved with these artisans, who are often the most interesting and valuable contributors to a film.
Exhibit A: Ruth E. Carter, nominated for her costume design on “Black Panther.”
Carter was an honoree this month at Variety’s fifth annual Artisan Awards at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. She spoke of her work as “an exploration of culture and color” as she created distinct costumes for various tribes of Wakanda, carefully choosing textiles, accessories and jewelry.
She wanted the costumes to reflect the fact that Africa and Asia shared cultures for many centuries, plus another factor: “Wakanda...

Variety’s fifth annual Artisan Awards Feb. 4 featured nine behind-the-camera artists trying to explain how complicated their work is, but all admitted that it isn’t easy.
“Even my children don’t understand what I do,” deadpanned “The Favourite” production designer Fiona Crombie.
“BlacKkKlansman” editor Barry Alexander Brown agreed that it’s often hard to describe, but he saluted his fellow honorees by saying, “You’re creating a world, with minute details. There are an endless amount of choices you have to make; yet what you do, whether it’s in sound or visual effects — it’s a mystery to most people.”
The event, held at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, Calif., was part of the 34th Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
The format was the same as in past years: A clip was shown from each of the films, then each honoree took part in a brief Q&A about their work.

“Ready Player One” also landed five nominations, while “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and “Welcome to Marwen” each earned three. “Christopher Robin” and “First Man” picked up a pair apiece, while “Ant Man and the Wasp” landed one. While “Avengers: Infinity War” topped the 17th annual Ves Awards (to be held February 5th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel) with six nominations, “Black Panther,” Marvel’s other Oscar frontrunner, was shut out. And Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed “First Man,” another frontrunner, was included in the supporting category as a result of its invisible VFX. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” meanwhile, was also snubbed.
However, joining “Infinity War” in the top VFX category were a surprising list: “Ready Player One” (with five nominations), “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin” and “Welcome to Marwen.” Joining “First Man” for supporting VFX were “12 Strong,” Bird Box,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Outlaw King”.
In animation, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” with four. They were joined by Illumination’s “The Grinch” and Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs.

For Industrial Light & Magic, realizing the virtual reality of The Oasis from “Ready Player One” became an eerie trip down memory lane, as they recreated the “Back to the Future” DeLorean and the “Jurassic Park” T-Rex, among other iconic ’80s goodies.
And while it was extremely difficult building the virtual worlds of the Oasis and animating the avatars so they believably resembled their real-world counterparts (who were motion captured), the geekiest part was reconstructing the interior of The Overlook Hotel from Stanley Kubrick’s horror fave, “The Shining.” It was a Steven Spielberg masterstroke, a virtual thrill ride, in which the High Five enter the Overlook in search of the Jade Key, with Aech (Lena Waithe) stumbling through the movie within the movie, having never seen “The Shining.”

The 40th Annual Saturn Awards were held this past Thursday, June 26th, and a what great show it was from (as Johnny Carson used to say) "beautiful downtown Burbank"! Here's the full list of winners and more.
Actually, we were high above the city at the famous Castaway restaurant and banquet hall. The Saturn Awards has been held here for the past few years, and it really is a fabulous venue with the best views of the San Fernando Valley anywhere.
Among the winners are Dread Central favorites "The Walking Dead," "Hannibal," The Conjuring, and Vera Farmiga's no holds barred performance as Norma Bates in "Bates Motel." The eye candy and updates from the carpet come from director Neil Marshall; the Curse of Chucky crew - Don Mancini, Brad Dourif, and Fiona Dourif; Insidious 3's Lin Shaye; and more. There's even some Ghostbusters 3 non-news!

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

While live-blogging the Oscars you really don't get too much of a chance to take in all the acceptance speeches. I catch a few moments here and there, and I can pretty much tell when the air is being let out of the room as well as those moments where someone is really capturing the moment. What I've put together below are the five speeches where I think the winner really managed to stand-out. I also love the true excitement coupled with the words chosen in these speeches. Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave, especially, seemed to capture the room with her infectious smile as much as Jennifer Lawrence a year before, not to forget her brother, Peter, who photobombed Ellen's Twitter-breaking selfie and is clearly someone very special in Lupita's life and she in his. 2013 was an unusually rich year for movies. I felt strongly about both my top ten choices of the year and the runners-up, and I still left off a ton of movies that I enjoyed completely and that I'd recommend to audiences. One of the things that is hardest for me to get my head around when contemplating the Oscars is the idea of picking one thing to represent the year in each of these categories. Still, if I were told today that I had an Oscar ballot and I was asked to vote, the only way I could do it would be operating from pure gut feeling. I wouldn't worry about trying to predict anyone else's response. This was an annual exercise for Siskel and Ebert for years, and they always seemed to use the opportunity to champion what they felt were the underdogs of the nominations. We'll run down every category here.

In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! The season of Oscars Lowdown (née Oscar Guide) might as well begin with the biggest no-brainer category of the bunch, just to go ahead and get it out of the way. But it's worth pointing out that it's always unfortunate when there's an obvious winner in any category, particularly Best Visual Effects as it seems a number of times over the last few years — "Avatar," "Life of Pi," etc. — there has been a clear dominant player and all other nominees are just along for the ride. Still, this year's likely victor is a landmark every bit deserving of the trophy coming its way.

Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor. As for the BAFTA Awards, it was Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) taking Best Supporting Actor and while Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) added another Best Actress award to...

Last night, lots of people headed off to London's Royal Opera House, where Stephen Fry hosted the British Academy Film Awards. That's the BAFTAs to you and us.
The BAFTAs used to be one of those ceremonies where people sent speeches to be read by other people, but these days, it seems really quite posh. Most of the nominees seemed to be in attendance, even those who didn't win, and if it carries on at this rate, the BBC may actually show us the whole event, rather than editing it down to two hours, to be shown a further two hours after it actually took place.
Anyway, the big winners turned out to be Gravity, which snared six gongs, American Hustle, which got three,...

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" led the pack with 11 nominations including Best Film, British Film (who knew "Gravity" was a British movie?), Director for Cuaron, Screenplay for Cuaron and his son Jonas, and Actress for Sandra Bullock.
The biggest snub in my humble opinion was "Dallas Buyers Club" which appeared nowhere on the nominations list. Apparently, the British Academy did not deem Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto award-worthy!
The BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera house in London. Will "Gravity" emerge as the victorious movie that night? And by the way, "Gravity" was my No. 1 favorite film of 2013!

Early this morning saw the announcement of the nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards for 2013. For the most part, they look like all of the other guild nominations we’ve seen over the past month or so (including all five director nominees who were just nominated for the DGA’s top award), but there are a few interesting differences to take note of.
First off, Philomena has a much stronger presence here, but given that it is a British film, it’s hardly surprising. You may also notice a lot of love for Behind the Candelabra, a film that was only shown on TV in the States, making it ineligible for theatrical awards.
However, aside from that, just about all the major players are here. Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. 12 Years a...

It’s already an amazing awards show season, and the 2014 BAFTA Awards just released their own list of worthy contenders.
Not surprisingly, George Clooney and Sandra Bullock's “Gravity” is at the front of the pack with a whopping 11 nods including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Original Music.
Following close behind, “American Hustle” and “12 Years A Slave” each have 10 chances at glory, and “Captain Phillips” will compete in nine categories.
Meanwhile, Michael Douglas and Matt Damon's flamboyant flick “Behind the Candelabra” is tied with Tom Hanks’ “Saving Mr. Banks,” each receiving five mentions.
And of course, everyone has been talking about the previously announced hopefuls for the fan-voted Ee Rising Star Award- Dane DeHaan, George McKay, Will Poulter, Lea Seydoux, and Lupita Nyong’o.

BAFTA Awards 2014: ‘American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity,’ and ’12 Years a Slave’ tops (photo: BAFTA 2014 nominees Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence in ‘American Hustle’) Nominations for the 2014 BAFTA Awards were announced a little while ago. In a live broadcast streamed this morning, the British Academy announced its nominees for this year's BAFTAs. We didn't have the time or the money to get hold of a tuxedo in time for the event, but we did manage to put on an extremely posh dressing gown.
The winners of the coveted metal BAFTA face will be announced next month, but for now, take a look at the list of nominees below, and see how your favourite films, actors and filmmakers of last year tallies with the Academy's. There are few genuine surprises among the choices, but we're guessing that Frozen's a shoo-in for best animation.
