Willem Dafoe will star in Disney’s “Togo” live-action movie about two of the key figures in the 1925 Nome Serum Run — sled dog Togo and sled driver Leonhard Seppala.
Disney is developing “Togo” for its streaming service, which will launch late next year. Ericson Core, whose credits include “Invincible” and the remake of “Point Break,” is directing.
Nome, Alaska became famous in 1925 as the destination of the serum run, also known as the Great Race of Mercy, in which dog sleds played a major role in transporting diphtheria serum through harsh conditions over nearly 700 miles to save the city from an epidemic. Gunnar Kaasen and his lead sled dog Balto became known for running the final leg of the run while the 12-year-old lead dog Togo and Seppala ran the penultimate and longest leg in temperatures that were 30 degrees below zero in gale force winds.

Get used to hearing Niki Caro’s name. As the only female director to have not just one, but two studio pictures hitting the big screen over the next two years, including Disney’s much-hyped live-action remake of “Mulan,” the filmmaker is about to be catapulted to a rarefied position in an industry that is not always friendly to placing women behind the camera. That doesn’t mean she’s entirely happy about it.
“That just depresses me,” Caro told IndieWire when asked about her unique upcoming slate. “It’s wonderful for me, but God, I have survivor guilt over this. The fact that I’m working is great and I feel very fortunate, but the fact that so many highly skilled, gifted women are not, it’s shameful.”
But Caro has a plan to combat Hollywood’s gender imbalance behind the camera, and it’s one she’s already putting into action.

The Santa Ana winds may have brought down Jessica Chastain’s intended hair-do, but an abundance of hot topics were brought up at The Zookeeper’s Wife L.A. premiere Monday night at the Arclight Hollywood.
"Well you know, it’s interesting, at the time that we were making this, we anticipated that Hilary Clinton was going to win the presidency," producer Kim Zubick told The Hollywood Reporter. "So we were excited because we were going to be releasing a film that was about the empowerment of women."

Everyone goes through a midlife crisis eventually. Some people will resolve it with purchasing a new car, getting a new career, or even obtaining a new wardrobe.
Not for Burt Squire. He goes on an adventure in the middle of the ocean.
Ld Entertainment recently acquired Ben Bolea’s script The Miserable Adventures Of Burt Squire Aboard The Horn High Yo.
The misadventures follows a family man as he embarks on a dream sailing vacation, but ends up shipwrecked in the Atlantic Ocean with a charming, but unhinged sea captain who’s off his meds.
Wme represented Bolea and brokered a mid-six figure deal.
Ld’s Mickey Liddell, Pete Shilaimon and Jennifer Monroe will produce the project along with Kim Zubick (The Zookeeper’S Wife).
“Ben’s script is riveting. This story is incredibly funny and smart, reminding me of classic 1980s buddy comedies like Planes, Trains And Automobiles and Midnight Run.

Are you having a good week at work? Maybe your boss said something nice to you, or your Q4 self-eval went well, or you hit those new sales targets — either way, that all sounds absolutely miserable compared to the wonderful experience had by Jessica Chastain on the Holocaust zoo drama The Zookeeper's Wife. Why was it so great? As the actress wrote in an essay about the shoot for THR, unlike other film sets, there were women everywhere: "There are female producers (Diane Levin, Kim Zubick and Katie McNeill), a female screenwriter (Angela Workman), a female novelist (Diane Ackerman), a female protagonist and a female director," to say nothing of the female camera operator and female stunt coordinator. Though men still made up the majority of the crew, having so many women in positions of power was great for everyone, Chastain reports. "When you have both genders represented, then you...

The place is Poland, homeland of Antonina Żabiński (portrayed by Ms. Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh, a European Film Award nominee for the Academy Award-nominated The Broken Circle Breakdown). Comedies don't get much lamer than License to Wed. Working from a flawed premise with characters lacking credibility and plot turns more moronic than funny, the movie flatlines in about five minutes. Yes, it does star Robin Williams, but this is the cloying Williams who turns up in such movies as Patch Adams and Jack. And for Mandy Moore, the film reps a step backward into nondescript fluff after proving herself capable of sterner stuff in Dedication at January's Sundance Film Festival. This License should expire a week after opening.
Williams plays an overheated if not mentally unbalanced minister who puts engaged couples through a relationship torture test before he will agree to marry them. So the movie asks us to accept a man of the cloth illegally bugging a couple's bedroom with minimicrophones, having the bride drive down a street blindfolded and encouraging the groom to pick fights with his future in-laws. Another of his great ideas is twin robotic babies that scream and defecate to simulate what having children is like. (Which, of course, ignores all the joys of real parenthood.)
Moore and John Krasinski of NBC's The Office play the put-upon couple, but nothing in Kim Barker, Tim Rasmussen and Vince Di Meglio's belabored screenplay (from a story by Barker and Wayne Lloyd) explains why they put up with any of this nonsense. Moore is therefore forced to play her character as too dumb and insensitive to notice, and Krasinski is a guy who will go along with anything including allowing the reverend to break his nose.
The most obnoxious character -- though just barely -- belongs to child actor Josh Flitter, who plays the reverend's henchman, Choir Boy. He does all the breaking and entering, electronic spying and remote controls on the berserk Robo Babies. He is made to look positively evil and is, we are told, a "minister in training." God help the parishioners of that church.
Christine Taylor and DeRay Davis play the thankless roles of Moore's divorced sister and Krasinski's best friend, respectively, each charged with delivering nothing but bad advice. Meanwhile, Peter Strauss looks stiff and unhappy as Moore's aloof dad.
For the record, no less than a dozen people took some sort of producing credit on this film.
