Finland has responded to a spike in demand for its content with a slew of new series. As revealed by Laura Kuulasmaa, executive director at Audiovisual Producers Finland (Apfi), over 30 will be released this year alone, a 20% uptick on 2018.
“Compared to eight, ten years ago, when there were maybe only five scripted series per year, the increase has been huge,” she tells Variety ahead of French TV festival Series Mania’s “Focus on Finland” showcase.
The Film in Finland cash rebate has facilitated international investments and growth of the budgets, she notes.
Matti Paunio, head of production at the Finnish Film Foundation, adds:
“I think the biggest trend overall is the diversification of subjects and points of view. Scripts and series are more courageous, they take on different genres more often than ever. Production is booming, but apart from the quantity, we are also providing quality.”

Tagline: "No Happy Campers Here..." Director: Taneli Mustonen. Writers: Aleksi Hyvärinen and Taneli Mustonen. Cast: Mimosa Willamo, Nelly Hirst-Gee, Mikael Gabriel and Santeri Helinheimo Mäntylä. Before Lake Bodom, there has only been one Finnish slasher film ever made. And, outside of 2008's Dark Floors and Tero Molin's Skeleton Crew (2009), there have only been a half dozen Finnish horror films ever created. Now, Lake Bodom can be added to both of these short lists! In the film, an ancient murder is revisited, in which three campers were killed and one person survived. Hmm, this critic has an idea as to who the killer was. But, director Taneli Mustonen and writer Aleksi Hyvärinen have their own ideas as to the killer's identity. And, there are a few twists and turns, to experience, before finding out who that is. Reminiscent of another film, Awakening the Zodiac, a killer is brought back to life,...

Going on a remote and bucolic holiday can be a risky business if you’re a movie teen feeling the first throws of love and, let’s be honest here, just plain thirsty. Sooner or later, that young and supple flesh will attract the unwanted attention of a hulking masked serial killer, and sure as eggs are eggs, by hook or machete, adolescent blood will be spilt by the gallon. Until one blue-eyed, blonde and always celibate girl is left standing, half-naked and traumatised. It is a gory and titillating premise hacked into the teen slasher genre, which had its heyday in American cinema in the early 1970s with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, ending in the mid-1980s with Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. They, and imitators alike grossed billions and billions of dollars at the box office.

This year’s South by Southwest lineup was surprisingly vacant of scare-focused horror – Midnighters selection included – but Lake Bodom lessened the sting of such programming. Taneli Mustonen’s Finnish thriller is an old-school slasher turned upside-down, happily defying perceptions that drive generic genre constructs. It’s based on an actual 1960s cold-case, where four campers were carved up in their tent (three died, one lived) – yet this is no retelling. Mustonen and co-writer Aleksi Hyvärinen adopt one of many floated media theories as fact, and mold a hellish camping trip around the discussed hypothesis. Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s not. That doesn’t make Lake Bodom any less interesting.
It all starts as many teenage slashers do. Two boys – Elias (Mikael Gabriel) and Atte (Santeri Helinheimo Mäntylä) – and two attractive females – Nora (Mimosa Willamo) and Ida (Nelly Hirst-Gee) – head off on a weekend getaway. The girls think they...

The director of the Finnish-language elevated horror, Taneli Mustonen, is currently shooting a sequel to his hit local comedy The Reunion, the most successful Finnish movie at the local box office in more than a decade.
The film is co-written by Mustonen and Aleksi Hyvärinen, both of whom are repped by Magnolia Entertainment. Hyvärinen also produces.
The team is aiming for a fall festival premiere.

Set in the present day, the film is about two couples who go to Bodom to reconstruct the events. It goes badly. “We aim to bring down the whole camping industry in Finland,” production company Don Films' Aleksi Hyvärinen chuckled to Empire last autumn. Mustonen's most recent film, The Reunion, was the biggest homegrown box-office hit in Finland in more than a decade.Oie's Villmark...

Some people make fun of me for my aversion to camping, but the joke's on them! I've seen way too many movies to not know that no good ever comes from poking around in the woods where you do not belong. At the very least shitting behind a tree sucks. Need another example to embrace civilization?
