Rick Riordan's middle-grade book series "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," and its larger universe of ancient mythology-based books, is arguably one of the few franchises that could legitimately be considered the heir to the "Harry Potter" phenomenon — but with way fewer scandals. Like the magical teenage boy, Percy Jackson also got a big-budget theatrical film adaptation (one directed by "Harry Potter" alum Chris Columbus and starring Logan Lerman and Alexandra Daddario). It made decent money but was so horrendous the author still talks trash about the two movies today.
The story follows a tween boy who discovers he is the son of the actual Greek god Poseidon and a human woman and is tasked with going on a road trip across the United States to find Zeus' stolen lightning bolt or risk a war on Olympus. Now, fans of the books will get a second chance at seeing the story play out on screen.

Writing for New Scientist magazine (paywalled), Christopher Paolini – author of 2002 fantasy novel Eragon, which was adapted for the big screen by 20th Century Fox in 2006 – cites Babylon 5 as a major influence on his new science fiction novel, Fractal Noise.
Fractal Noise is a prequel to Paolini’s first Sf novel, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, which was published in 2020. It is the third book in his Fractalverse series.
Paolini told New Scientist:
Although the CGI is pretty janky, as a result of a number of unfortunate studio choices over the years, the writing and storytelling of this series remain incredibly solid. One of the first TV shows to tackle multi-season arcs… and to make them work. Babylon 5 has some of the greatest characters found in science fiction, and some of the most moving and epic moments.
Can’t argue with that. Paolini has always been open about his influences,...

Of late, Disney+ has been setting its sights on adapting live-action versions of some famous fantasy genre novels. From Christopher Paolini's "Eragon" to Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book," the streamer knows what young adult audiences are looking for. One of Disney's latest fantasy ventures is an adaptation of "The Spiderwick Chronicles," a series of fantasy-adventure children's books from authors Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi.
The streamer made the announcement in November last year, to a thrilled response from fans of the books, who cannot wait to see another generation of kids face off against faeries, goblins, and other magical beasts. The books have previously been adapted into a 2008 feature film featuring Freddie Highmore, Seth Rogen, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Short, and others, and Disney+ has finally announced its entire cast for the televised version as well! Disney+ is developing a live-action television series adaptation of Eragon, based on Christopher Paolini’s popular YA book series The Inheritance Cycle. Eragon is the first book in the series.
Paolini will co-write the series and executive produce with Bert Salke executive producing via his Co-Lab 21 banner as part of his deal with Disney Television Studios. 20th Television is the studio.
In the series adaptation, a teenage boy becomes magically joined with a newly-hatched dragon. Together, they must learn what it means to be dragon and Rider as they fight in the resistance against a tyrannical king.

After a failed attempt to launch a franchise in 2006, Eragon has another shot at an on-screen adaptation with a TV series coming to Disney+.
“An Eragon live-action TV show is currently in development for Disney+. According to Variety, the upcoming Eragon series will adapt the popular fantasy novels, The Inheritance Cycle, by author Christopher Paolini. Eragon is the first novel in the series, forming a basis for the new show. Of course, it’s not the first time Eragon has been adapted. A live-action Eragon film debuted in 2006 but was critically panned. The film starred Ed Speleers as Eragon, Rachel Weisz as Saphira, Jeremy Irons as Brom, and John Malkovich as Galbatorix.”

Eragon is the first installment in the four-part novel series, which tells the story of a farm boy named Eragon, who discovers a dragon egg. “Eragon” is soaring back to screens, with a new live-action series in the works for Disney+ that would recruit author Christopher Paolini as the co-showrunner and co-writer.
Paolini confirmed the news on Twitter, saying “Y’all are the best fans.” Paolini last year called on fans to push Disney for a “proper” adaptation of his books after the 2006 film based on “Eragon” flopped.
The “Eragon” series would focus on the four young adult and fantasy books as part of Paolini’s “The Inheritance Cycle” of novels, with “Eragon,” first published by Knopf in 2003, being the first in that franchise. The series also includes the books “Eldest,” “Brisingr” and “Inheritance.”

It’s not often that it’s hard to say that a story should be adapted, but perhaps it’s due to the idea that Christopher Paolini’s book Eragon was kind of like a combination of The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, a barely hidden combination that drew too heavily from both stories to really be called anything but a shadow of a story. Seriously, as much as I like to state that every story has validity, there wasn’t quite enough originality poured into this particular story and as a result, the critics saw it, the fans saw, and they couldn’t

When “Eragon” was first released by 20th Century Fox in 2006, it was met with a, well, less than warm welcome. So Christopher Paolini, author of the best-selling trilogy, is hoping to see his work get another shot on screen with modern technologies, and he’s getting fans involved to make it happen.
Today, that 15-year-old film has a score of just 16% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and notched a 46% fresh rating from audiences. On the whole? Decidedly rotten. Of course, for most fans, that’s because the film adaptation strayed just a bit too far from the story told in the books.
Now, Paolini wants his series to get another shot with Disney. Taking to Twitter on Sunday, the author joined in on a fan-created campaign to push for a remake. Paolini encouraged his fanbase in their use of the hashtag #EragonRemake and noted that they should tag Disney to get their attention.

The holiday season is probably going to look very different this year, but there’s one thing that hasn’t changed: the sacred ritual of gift-giving. While we might not be able to gather in the same way for the 2020 holiday season, we can still let the people in our lives know how much they mean to us with the perfect gift (and maybe get ourselves something nice while we’re at it—we deserve it).
We here at Den of Geek believe there is no better gift than a good book and, with nerd culture still very much mainstream culture, there is no shortage of geeky books to get the nerd in your life. From Star Wars and Star Trek to Outlander and Wheel of Time to those speculative fiction books that broke into the zeitgeist this year without a franchise to support them, here’s a list of...

Video game actress Jennifer Hale, best known for her starring role as the Mass Effect series’ Commander Shepard, has been attached to Christopher Paolini’s next audio book.
Author of the wildly popular Eragon series about a boy and his dragon, Christopher Paolini became a household name in the early 2000s. Now he’s venturing into a new and unrelated science fiction universe, beginning with To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. An adult novel marketed as “epic”, it has a starting point very familiar to science fiction video game fans, with xenobiologist Kira Navárez finding an alien relic. The publisher’s summary says:
“During a routine survey mission on an uncolonized planet, Kira finds an alien relic. At first she’s delighted, but elation turns to terror when the ancient dust around her begins to move.
As war erupts among the stars, Kira is launched into a galaxy-spanning odyssey of discovery and transformation.

Christopher Paolini has been on the speculative fiction scene since he published his first novel, Eragon, as a teenager in 2002. The Inheritance Cycle series would go on to sell nearly 40 million copies globally. Nearly 20 years later, Paolini is breaking into the science fiction world with To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, his first adult novel. We are very excited to bring you a sneak peak, as part of a serialized excerpt campaign in partnership with Tor.com and The Mary Sue.

We look at how Dragonslayer by Duncan M Hamilton fits into the long-running fantasy subgenre involving dragons.
When Guillot is tasked with slaying the last of the dragons in Duncan M. Hamilton's Dragonslayer, the first in a planned fantasy trilogy, the character is way past his prime. All bets should be on the dragon, but a semblance of that knightly duty remains—even though Guillot struggles with alcoholism and is actively thwarted by someone high in power, there's tension in the narrative. Could Guillot actually win?

Knights and dragons -- it’s a tale as old as fiction and mythology. The traditional sort of dragon—winged, fire breathing—was popularized in the Middle Ages, the most famous story being St. George slaying the dragon. That story was immortalized in a Raphael painting, circa 1506, titled "Saint George and the Dragon,...

The story of Nona, the orphan-turned-nun trained for battle, comes to a climactic end in the final Book of the Ancestor.
This Holy Sister review contains spoilers for the previous Book of the Ancestor books, but only minor spoilers for the third book in the trilogy.
First off, if you haven’t read Red Sister or Grey Sister (the first two books in the Book of the Ancestor trilogy), you need to drop everything and read them now. This is my favorite series to come from this author so far. To put that in context, I have already read and loved Mark Lawrence's previous two series: The Broken Empire and The Red Queen’s War.
Here's what you may have missed: Nona was an orphan taken in by the Sweet Mercy convent as a child. The novices at the convent are trained in four different classes and...

Eight years after the last book in the Inheritance Cycle series, Christopher Paolini publishes a new short story collection.
I had a thought last year-- what has Christopher Paolini, author of the Inheritance Cycle series, been up to lately? A quick Google search told me nada. Then, at the very end of last year came a collection of short stories, set in the world of Alagaesia and a brief look at what our main character Eragon was up to, as well as telling some new stories set in that world.
It’s important to understand going in that this isn’t a singular story, and shouldn’t be held to the standards of holding up as a true sequel to the conclusion of the Inheritance Cycle. Holding it to such standards would leave the reader wanting much more from this, rather than enjoying the simple ride this collection presents.

Outlander fans are very familiar with horrifying villains. The antagonist of the show's earliest seasons, Black Jack Randall, was about as bad as a bad guy can get. In the upcoming fourth season, though, a new character might be giving Black Jack a run for his money. Irish pirate Stephen Bonnet, as fans of Diana Gabaldon's books will know, appears charming and handsome on the outside, but it doesn't take long for his awful nature to show itself. It's new territory for actor Ed Speleers, who plays Bonnet, and has previously made a career as fairly heroic characters.
Speleers started his career in a pretty magical way (pun intended). At the age of eighteen, after only appearing in school plays in England, he was plucked from a worldwide casting call to play the lead role in 2006's young adult fantasy epic Eragon. The movie, based on the first novel...

Even if you're not a big reader of young adult fiction, you may have seen the advertisements for the new Chloë Grace Moretz movie The 5th Wave and suspected that it looks like the kind of movie that was adapted from a Ya franchise. All the elements are there: a post-apocalyptic dystopia, a winsome female protagonist who stands up to become the world's champion, an imperiled younger sibling and the winning combination of light science fiction and teenaged angst. The 5th Wave is the first in a trilogy of books by Rick Yancey about a group of underage rebels fighting off an alien invasion.

For every Harry Potter or Hunger Games series, there are those franchises that didn't quite set the world on fire...
Since Insurgent came out, I’ve been thinking about those less fortunate: the franchise wannabes. While Divergent may have succeeded financially, (a film that rode on the coat-tails of the even more lucrative The Hunger Games franchise) there are others who didn’t quite make it into the movie world’s big leagues. These are the franchise-starters that flopped, the films produced with the optimistic hope that they will bring in the readies and kick-start Hollywood’s latest franchise. Worse luck for them, really.
For the sake of simplicity, this list will zero in on Ya franchise-starters, films adapted from a young adult novel or with that audience in mind. There are plenty of more mature films that struggled such as Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time, The A-Team...

A humble farm boy is thrust into a cataclysmic battle between good and evil when he chances upon a dragon's egg. John Malkovich leads this dynamic adaptation of teenage author Christopher Paolini's fantasy saga as the evil King Galbatorix while flaxen-haired newcomer Ed Speleers is the dragon-riding farmhand who could save the kingdom. Less forboding than the tales of Middle-earth, but a visually arresting and fleet-footed adventure none the less.

The film version of The Hunger Games is a fine example of the contemporary Hollywood franchise picture. It features a cast full of next-big-things breakout actors supported by old-pro ringers having a blast with funny wigs. It conjures up an intriguing new fantasy world without overdosing on world-building (like John Carter) or mythology (like Green Lantern.) More importantly, it manages to capture the propulsive energy of Suzanne Collins’ novel. Adapting a great book into a good movie is not an easy task, and the makers of Hunger Games deserve credit just for the bad decisions they didn’t make. (They...

It’s been a long road for Christopher Paolini and Eragon, the Last Dragon Rider of Alagaësia, but the end is finally in sight. Random House has announced that Inheritance, the 4th and last book of the Inheritance Cycle will be released this November.
Not so very long ago, Eragon—Shadeslayer, Dragon Rider—was nothing more than a poor farm boy, and his dragon, Saphira, only a blue stone in the forest. Now the fate of an entire civilization rests on their shoulders.
Long months of training and battle have brought victories and hope, but they have also brought heartbreaking loss. And still, the real battle lies ahead: they must confront Galbatorix. When they do, they will have to be strong enough to defeat him. And if they cannot, no one can. There will be no second chances.
The Rider and his dragon have come further than anyone dared to hope.

It does my heart good going to the smaller panels and seeing these tiny rooms busting at the seams. Sure, while everyone's clamoring for glimpses at the new Tron: Legacy trailer, there's still folks there to hear about the newest issues of Brightest Day or to hear about the latest expansion pack for Magic: The Gathering. But not me, cause that shit's for losers.
Instead, I decided to pile into a crowded house full of my fattest and sweatiest compatriots to hear a panel wax poetic on the state of Epic Fantasy. There were six folks there: Lynn Flewelling, Megan Whalen Turner, Brent Weeks, Christopher Paolini, Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss. I was only there for the last two, but they were all pretty excellent speakers, especially Paolini, who's now an awkward twentysomething instead of an awkward teenager.
It wasn't so much a debate as one person would make a good point,...

Eragon is based off the bestselling book by Christopher Paolini. Fans of the book series will notice that the story in the movie is only very loosely based off the books, but to someone new to the story, it will be an epic movie that is very enjoyable. The movie was released in 2006, making $249 million worldwide in the box offices. It tells the story of a young farm boy by the name of Eragon. He finds a mysterious stone in the mountains and later learns that it is a dragon's egg. After the murder of his uncle, he sets out with the village storyteller, Brom. They plan to reach the Varden, where Eragon can join the freedom fighters and one day take down the evil King Galbatorix. Eragon was filmed in Hungry and Slovakia, home to the stunning views shown on Eragon's travels. The critical response was mixed. Some...

BoxOfficeProphets.com has written an interesting prophecy on how well they think Twilight will do at the box office. They delve into book sales and a few other statistics to make their decision and it seems as though some of their staff has mixed opinions. Some have high hopes and some arent quite convinced yet. Here's a bit of what they had to say
What are you expecting from the box office performance of Twilight?
Jason Dean-As a data point there are more than a few over 18-year-olds that have heard of the Twilight series and are desperately looking forward to the opening.
Jason Lee-A big big big part of me sincerely doubts that this movie takes off at the box-office. I know that David has posted information proving me wrong but I just don't see the audience for this films skewing wider than your typical fan who goes to see teen-slasher films.

Update: I have learned a few facts. First off, "Twilight", the book, has sold 5.5 million copies in the United States and the film is budgeted at $37 million. I wish I had those facts when I wrote the piece as they may have been helpful. Oh, and for Twilight fans a few extra details on the film's appearance at Comic Con have been revealed. Two new articles have prompted me to take another look at Twilight and what appears to be an online acceptance that this film will be a giant hit no matter what. Last night I started a huge rant article, but trashed it as it was going nowhere. I was to be based on the online reactions to the Entertainment Weekly cover featuring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as Edward and Bella from the Twilight film. Will Smith's credentials as a gold-plated draw took on added luster during the weekend as his new drama, Sony Pictures' The Pursuit of Happyness, raked in $26.5 million to take the top spot at the North American boxoffice, according to Monday's final figures.
The victory boosted Sony to a new domestic boxoffice record as its year-to-date grosses passed $1.573 billion, the largest tally by any studio ever in a single year; Sony established the previous record in 2002. As part of its 2006 winning streak, the Culver City studio has fielded 13 No. 1 openings, the most top openers by any studio in a single year.
20th Century Fox also was a big winner on the weekend, earning $23.2 million for the fantasy actioner Eragon, which checked in at No. 2 at the boxoffice. Made for a reported $90 million-$100 million -- the biggest-budgeted project to come out of the studio's Fox 2000 division -- the film adaptation of the Christopher Paolini book performed better then expected, establishing itself as a potential franchise.
No amount of marketing for Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Movies' Charlotte's Web could lure moms away from the malls this pre-Christmas weekend. Debuting at No. 3, the live-action/animated version of the E.B. White children's classic garnered just $11.5 million, less than expected. (By comparison, Sony's Stuart Little, also adapted from one of White's books, bowed to $15 million on the comparable weekend in 1999.)
Paramount, though, is confident that the film will hold steady as moms become available over the holiday and with elementary-aged children out of school for winter break.
Optimism aside, the weekend total for the top 12 films failed to improve over last year at this time, finishing 8% lower with an estimated $112.2 million. That compared with $122.4 million last year, when Universal Pictures' King Kong debuted to $50 million.
In limited release, the debut of the Paramount Pictures/DreamWorks co-production Dreamgirls did phenomenal business in special roadshow engagements at three theaters. With tickets priced at $25 and only 21 shows for the weekend, the Bill Condon-directed musical grossed $378,950 for a per-screen average of $126,317. The film will continue playing this way until Dec. 25, when it expands to 800 theaters nationally.
Most of the holdovers from the previous weekend performed solidly during their sophomore sessions. Sony's romantic comedy The Holiday celebrated a 37% drop, placing fifth overall. The Cameron Diaz-Kate Winslet starrer grossed an additional $8 million to put its 10-day cume at $25.1 million.
