Stx Films is in final talks for director-producer Tim Story to re-team with Kevin Hart on the superhero comedy “Night Wolf.”
Story collaborated with Hart on both “Ride Along” movies and the two “Think Like a Man” titles. Hart came on to the “Night Wolf” project last year and will star and produce through his HartBeat Productions.
“Night Wolf,” written by “Detective Pikachu” screenwriters Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, follows Hart’s character meeting his future father-in-law for the first time only to discover he is secretly the superhero known as the Night Wolf.
Should the deal make, Story will direct and produce through his production company, The Story Company.

There’s no surer ingredient for a feel-good documentary than an inspirational sports story, and filmmaker Dani Menkin (39 Pounds of Love, Is That You?) delivers one in spades with his recounting of the 1977 European Cup victory by the national Israeli basketball team, Maccabi Tel Aviv. Compelling enough to anticipate the inevitable Hollywood dramatization of the story, On the Map will prove fascinating even to non-sports buffs.
The game proved a rallying cry for Israelis who had been buffeted by such events as the 1972 massacre of its Olympic athletes at Munich, the 1973 Yom Kippur War and the 1976...

– “3-D Auteurs,” a 19-day, 34-film festival spotlighting stereoscopic movies by some of history’s most distinguished directors, will run at Film Forum November 11 – 29. The festival spans 3-D’s earliest days (including some turn-of-the-century films by pioneer Georges Méliès) to the present, and represents virtually every genre, including Westerns, Film Noir, and Science Fiction. Hollywood’s first big 3-D craze (sometimes called 3-D’s “golden era”), intended to offset the threat of television, came in the early 1950s, with such movies as Hitchcock’s “Dial M For Murder,” André De Toth’s “House of Wax” and Jack Arnold’s “Creature From the Black Lagoon” (all included in the series).
Hollywood produced roughly 50 movies in the process from 1952 to 1954, before fizzling out and being overtaken by...

"We are on the map. And we will stay on the map! Not only in sports, but in everything!" That was the iconic line spoken by Israeli basketball player Tal Brody after his team won the European Championship in 1977. On the Map is a documentary that profiles the successful victory of the Israeli basketball team in the 1970s, an amazing feat that actually did help put Israel "on the map" - at least in sports history. This looks like it has glorious old school footage from the matches, as well as some great interviews with many of the players who are still alive today. Israeli figures from outside the sports world, including former ambassador Michael Oren, politician Yair Lapid and former refusenik Natan Sharansky, all recall what TV commentator Alex Giladi calls "the end of Israeli sport losing with honor." If you're into sports docs, check this out below. Here's...

Describe Dani Menkin’s new film, “Is That You?,” in one word, and that word might well be “ambitious,” or at least “shrewd.” Instead of just making a quirky road trip movie to delight crowds of twenty-something cinephiles, or a comically bittersweet “road not taken” picture to tickle moviegoers of advanced ages, Menkin made a road […]

Disney Pictures and Mandeville Films have picked up the remake rights to Israeli documentary "Dolphin Boy."
Dani Menkin and Yonatan Nir's doco revolves around a teenager from an Arab village in northern Israel who is traumatized from a violent attack and slowly recovers with the help of dolphins.
"The Bucket List" scribe Justin Zackham will pen the script for a narrative feature adaptation that's expected to be done on a modest budget (ala "The Odd Life of Timothy Green"). David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman will produce.

And now for something entirely different. Variety reports (via ComingSoon) that Walt Disney Pictures have picked up the film rights to Dani Menkin and Yonatan Nir‘s 2011 documentary Dolphin Boy in order to turn it into a narrative feature. Dolphin Boy, you say, that sounds charming! A boy and his dolphins! Swimming free! Free Willy with dolphins, nature’s smartest aquatic creature! Aww! Wrong. The synopsis for the original film doesn’t shy away from tossing out terms that we might necessarily associate with the House of Mouse – terms like “violent attack,” “before hospitalization in a mental institution,” “devastating havoc that human violence can wreak upon the human soul,” and more! I’m devastated just reading about this film. If you’re into having your soul pulled out through your throat, the doc’s full synopsis reads as such: Morad – a teenager from an Arab village in the north of Israel disconnects himself from humans following a...

After dishing out on some of the possible contenders, here's my second entry on the race for this year's Ophir Awards. Here's an overview of some more films up for awards: Dani Menkin's Je t'aime I Love you Terminal Working with a Before Sunrise/Sunset-like template, this is a tale of two young strangers “forced” to spend a short time with one another. Danny Niv (Aka "Mooki") is a well known Israeli rapper, who moonlights as an actor (he had a small part in the 2002's Broken Wings) and despite his good turn here, he is juxtaposed to a female character that is closer to Sally Hawkins's character in Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky than Julie Delpy in Linklater's classic, thus makes this fall into a mouldy sitcom territory. Menkin is best known for his doc film 39 Pounds of Love, but this attempt into the fiction film realm (see trailer) won't gain any traction among voters.
