IFC Make Up with 'Breaking Upwards'

12 November 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- When it comes to release time, Daryl Wein's Breaking Upwards might want to come with the label this ain't Mumblecore. Not that there is a problem with the films, but seeing that IFC Films don't have a problem with inexpensive/low-budget films, I'm afraid that cinephiles might lump this with the Swanberg/Bujalski/Shelton group. Judging by the trailer, this might be low budget and addresses relationship issues head on, but the actors are pro and I'm sure the script was pretty much not invented on the spot. It was announced that IFC Films who've recently picked up the SXSW entry for a springtime, when flowers bloom release of the 2nd of April.  Written by Daryl Wein, Zoe Lister-Jones and Peter Duchan, 'Breaking Upwards' explores a young, real-life New York couple who, fours years in and battling codependency, decide to intricately strategize their own break up. »

The Big Apple Film Festival Begins Tonight!

3 November 2009 1:15 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Attention New Yorkers (or people who live somewhere near New York and from time to time travel to the city for a taste of some quality entertainment): The Sixth Annual Big Apple Film Festival begins tonight over at Tribeca Cinemas and runs through Saturday, November 7th. Named one of the "25 Coolest Film Festivals" by Moviemaker Magazine (partly because yours truly is heavily involved with all aspects of the festival, natch), this year's slate of over 100 different films looks to be their best yet.

Now this isn't some giant big city festival by any means; it's more of a small, intimate slice-of-ny-life sorta festival that supports and promotes homegrown talent. Tonight they're opening the festival with Against the Current, starring Joseph Fiennes, Elizabeth Reaser, Justin Kirk and Mary Tyler Moore -- and if you're one of the lucky ones in attendance, you'll spot a hottie Cinematical stud named Erik Davis hosting the post-screening Q&A. »

Little Rock Film Festival 2009: More Films

20 May 2009 3:09 PM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Lrff organizers say attendance numbers have more than doubled over last year's festival. Part of the reason has to be the high quality of films screening. Here are some of my favorites.

Daryl Wein (Breaking Upwards) & Logan Miller (Touching Home) at Lrff Picnic

Touching HomeThink about this scenario: You've never written a screenplay. You've never directed a film. You've never acted in a film. Heck, you've never even been a grip. Try taking that resume and making a film with it, starring veteran actor Ed Harris. That is exactly what co-directors Logan and Noah Miller have done with Touching Home. Based on the true story of the Miller Brothers' relationship with their alcoholic father (played by Harris) the twin brothers play themselves and are surprisingly good.  Filmed at and around their home in Marin County, north of San Francisco, the story focuses on the boys' attempts to become professional baseball »

Rating: 8.5 out of 10

Breaking Upwards is an effortlessly hip and funny new indie flick that easily ranks among the best films about relationships I've ever seen. For anyone who's ever thought that mainstream romantic comedies are a tad cliched or that the majority of their indie counterparts are quickly becoming limp and ironic flip sides of the same relationship fantasy coin, Breaking Upwards is exactly what you've been waiting for. It captures the modern relationship as it is; complex and not always easy, without painting people or their problems with a black and white brush. I would even go so far as to say it accomplishes for relationships in the new millennium what Annie Hall did in the 70s. Plus, it has great music in it.

Watch Our Movie Or Die

Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein, who used to date, made a movie called Breaking Upwards about breaking up with each other starring themselves.  The fourth of four promos for their SXSW premiere came out today.  The first promo is a rap video with Olivia Thirlby rhyming "SAG Modified Low" to other things, in her bra. Daryl gets naked. Breaking Upwards Rap Video - watch more funny videos  Today's is a horrifying look at a rape on a casting couch. A brain rape. Breaking Upwards. SXSW Preview.

6 March 2009 11:59 AM, PST | Spout.com | See recent Spout news »

Daryl Wein's Breaking Upwards is one of my most personally anticipated films of SXSW 2009. Wein's follow-up to last year's SXSW doc premiere Sex Positive, Breaking is a narrative feature starring Wein and his real-life girlfriend Zoe Lister-Jones as themselves alongside a slightly-starrier supporting cast including Olivia Thirlby. Answering The 5 Questions We Ask Everyone, Wein talks about his film and stuff, but more importantly, he makes our second SXSW-related blow job joke of the day. Tell us about your movie. Who did you work with, why did you make it? Give us the reductive, 25-word or less, "It's like [pop culture reference a] meets [pop culture reference b]!" pitch, then explain what the quick and dirty sell leaves out. Breaking Upwards follows a young, real-life New York couple who strategize their own break-up, in a fictional narrative ... »

Worth Watching - Feb 3: Daryl Wein's Breaking Upwards Trailer

3 February 2009 4:42 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Breaking Upwards is a quirky little romantic comedy about a young New York couple that intricately strategizes their own break up. It looks fun and very entertaining, to say the least, and stars the same guy that wrote and directed it. The film will be showing at SXSW in March, so I'm happy to feature this trailer today (via SlashFilm) well before its world premiere. In addition to Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister Jones, the film also stars Peter Friedman and Olivia Thirlby. It's definitely on my list of films to see at SXSW this year. Let us know if you think it looks good too and look for our review and coverage in March. SXSW 09: Trailer for Breaking Upwards

2 February 2009 3:32 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Forever the connoisseur of weird indy romance flicks, I just couldn't pass this one up. It's a "strategized" breakup with lots of jealousy and humor set in NY. Someone send me a copy!

Breaking Upwards follows a young New York couple who, after four years together, have grown stifled. Desperate to escape their ennui, but fearful of life apart, they decide to intricately strategize their own break up.The film blurs the line between documentary and narrative by casting real life couple (and filmmakers) Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones as themselves. An uncensored look at young love, lust, and the pangs of codependency, 'Breaking Upwards' follows its characters as they navigate each others' emotions across the city they love. It begs the question: is it ever possible to grow apart together?

SXSW 09: Full lineup announced

1 February 2009 9:12 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.

From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.

For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.

I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
