As the 1970s gave way to the 1980s, director Lucio Fulci increasingly specialised in the dark, ultraviolent horror movies which would earn him the affectionate moniker “the Godfather of Gore”.
The third and final instalment in his “Gates of Hell” trilogy, 1981’s The House by the Cemetery showcases the malevolent maestro at his blood-drenched best.

After helping to pioneer Italy’s budding giallo genre throughout the 1970s with influential titles like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, and Deep Red, Dario Argento took a brief sabbatical from the lurid thrillers to explore supernatural elements in Suspiria and Inferno. When the latter failed at the box office, he made a triumphant return to gialli in 1982 with Tenebrae (sometimes spelled Tenebre; originally released in the US as Unsane).
While his American contemporaries were trying to come up with inventive instruments of death to propel slasher films, Argento was designing more lavish ways to film his kill scenes. Suspiria remains his crowning achievement, but Tenebrae finds the filmmaker bringing his honed visual panache to the giallo sandbox in which he made a name for himself. The result stands not only as one of Argento’s strongest efforts but also a landmark giallo work.

Since launching in 2020, Cauldron Films has quickly established itself as a boutique label to watch for cult film fans. In addition to unearthing and restoring obscurities like The Crimes of the Black Cat, American Rickshaw, and Frankenstein ’80, they’ve secured a few heavy hitters. Their most recognizable title to date is Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead (originally released in the US as The Gates of Hell). Following an exclusive slipcase edition last year, a standard retail version of the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray set is available this week.
The 1980 Italian horror film is significant for kicking off Fulci’s thematically connected Gates of Hell trilogy, followed by The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery the next year. Developed in the wake of Fulci’s success with Zombie in 1979, City of the Living Dead features more undead ghouls but this time as accoutrements rather than a centerpiece.

As an avid fan of both exploitation and documentary, I could not easily find anything better to watch than a documentary about Hk cinema’s Cat III movies. Even more so, since James Mudge, a personal friend of mine and author of one of the most detailed guides in the category participates in the film, along a number of experts, like the director Calum Waddell and Sean Tierney (aka Silver Spleen), some of the actual protagonists of the films of the category, like Anthony Wong and Josie Ho, and some of their directors, like Godfrey Ho, who talk about both Cat III and their personal experiences.
The documentary starts with the history of the category, tracing it, as usually in Hk cinema, in the productions of Shaw Brothers and the influence of Run Run Shaw that allowed him to “ignore” censorship. The film “Men Behind the Sun” however, is considered...

As someone who grew up reading The Dark Side magazine I was privileged to be made aware of a myriad of genre films that, had I just stuck to the shelves of my local video store, I would never have heard of. Of course this was during a turbulent period in UK cinema history that, much like the video nasties era before it, saw horror films treated with disdain. Which meant that unlike today – where you can walk into HMV and buy former video nasty Anthropophagus on Blu-ray or order films from around the world online – it was a struggle to find a lot of the movies I read about. he United Kingdom has an infamous history when it comes to censorship. The debacle of the eighties with many films, either good or bad becoming the victims of censorship is something that we’d rather forget. Films were looked down on even for having certain words in the title, with one example being Chainsaw which was probably because of the dubious connection to Texas Chainsaw Massacre. One of these movies that dared to test the censors with such a name was Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers which 88 Films have now released on Blu-ray as part of their Slasher Classics Collection.

[Editors Note: Given that we've already reviewed the Vinegar Syndrome release of Graduation Day and both discs are virtually identical bar the extras, we thought we'd review the Major difference between the two Blu-ray releases - the bonus feature on the UK disc, the documentary Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed]
It’s fair to say I’m a sucker for scream queen “documentaries”. Be they the T&A filled features such as Scream Queen Hollywood Hot Tub Party, more amateur-hour productions such as Donald Farmer’s shot-on-video Invasion of the Scream Queens, or the awesome scream queen interviews that featured in Stephen King’s World of Horror – if it features an interview with a scream queen then I’m there. I’m also a fan of the documentaries and Blu-ray extras produced by High Rising Productions – including their previously released slasher movie documentary: Slice and Dice: The Slasher Movie Forever.
Put the two together and… I’m in filmic heaven!
Directed by UK-horror scene stalwart Calum Waddell and hosted by scream queen Debbie Rochon (Terror Firmer, Tromeo and Juliet) Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed features, in a change of pace for horror documentaries, especially those focusing on females in the genre,...

Arrow Video is thrilled to announce the UK Blu-ray and DVD release of Mark of the Devil, once proclaimed as “positively the most horrifying film ever made”. Mark of the Devil finally arrives uncut in the UK on 29th September 2014. With Mark of the Devil, writer-director Michael Armstrong created a bloody and brutal critique of state-funded brutality and religious corruption with a doomed romance at its centre. In America, Mark of the Devil was distributed with a free sick bag provided for every patron. In the UK the BBFC were obliged to sit through the entire uncut film and deemed it “vicious and disgusting.” They recommended that a certificate be refused entirely and provided a list of required cuts to make the film acceptable for an X certificate. This means that finally, after more than forty years, the full-blooded, full-frontal version of Mark of the Devil can be released with...

One of the most fondly remembered eras in fright-film history is the golden age of Italian gore – a prolific period that brought such directors as Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava and Lucio Fulci to international attention and acclaim. Spawning all number of surreal sub-genres, including black-gloved killer-thrillers and stomach-churning cannibal adventures, this is a time that continues to crib a fresh generation of fascinated fans.
As such, 88 Italian have announced the UK Blu-ray release Zombi Holocaust (1980) and Burial Ground aka Nights of Terror (1981) – a pair of plasma-packed pot-boilers that could only have been dreamt up during the bygone boom in Euro-terror eccentricity.

Released in 1981, Graduation Day has become a favourite of slasher movie fans thanks to its plasma-spurting set pieces, maniacal mystery-killer storyline and a cast of cult celebrities that includes Christopher George (City of the Living Dead), Vanna White (Wheel of Fortune) and the perennially topless Scream Queen Linnea Quigley. Ask any self-respecting slasher buff about the genre’s ‘golden age’ and they will doubtlessly wax poetic about the plasma-packed pot-boilers of the 1980s – the decade of destruction that gave us Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and the transsexual teen-tormenter of the Sleepaway Camp series. Given the label’s name, what better way for 88 Films to celebrate this halcyon era of horror than with a series of numbered and collectible sanguine-splashed shockers from the period of VHS and video nasties?

The slasher film does not have that much of a history of being scary. Mostly it’s about some psychopathic killer who easily stalks down his/her victim while they run for their lives but never quite manage to escape. This is of course unless they are pure and virginal deeming them the one to survive for moralistic value. I find that it’s quite rare to find a truly creepy slasher, which is why it was so nice to finally discover Tourist Trap.

In the middle of nowhere on a road that has been made redundant by a new highway is a little museum made up of mannequins and run by a seemingly nice man known as Mr. Slausen. When tourists turn up he...

Featuring one of the best taglines ever: “You have the right to remain silent… Forever”, one of my all-time favourite horror franchises finally makes it Blu-ray debut with this release of the fantastic Maniac Cop from Arrow Video. With Shaft hitting it big in the cinema in 1971, grabbing an audience spanning both age and race, producers scrambled to find the next big blaxploitation franchise and star. In walked Jack Hill with his 1973 effort Coffy. Starring Pam Grier as a vigilante nurse, the film was a runaway hit for American-International Pictures who commissioned Hill to come up with a follow-up. Originally conceived as a sequel to Coffy, Aip decided at the last minute it did not want to do a sequel and thus Foxy Brown was born…
Foxy Brown stars Pam Grier as the street-smart yet intensely sexy titular character, whose undercover-agent boyfriend is gunned down on the orders of evil drug kingpins. Racked with grief and anger she stops at nothing to exact a thrillingly brutal revenge.

Norman Bates once said “We all go a little crazy sometimes,” but never has this been truer than in the genre that spawned everybody's favourite mother's boy. I speak, of course, of the slasher film, the roots of which can arguably be traced back to Psycho (1960), Alfred Hitchcock's monochrome masterpiece.
Though there are cases for other films being the trigger point for the modern stalk and slash movie, notably Mario Bava's Bay of Blood (1971), Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom (1960), and even the various celluloid incarnations of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians, all of which are put forward by the contributors in Calum Waddell and Naomi Holwill's Slice and Dice: The Slasher Film Forever, it was Psycho that brought murder to the masses and opened the vein for what was to follow.
Slice and Dice: The Slasher Film Forever is out on 13th May 2013 in a splatter-packed two disc set.

If you have a hankering for all things slasher, then you're gonna want to grab your machete and get ready to party as 88 Films are poised to unsheathe High Rising Productions' independent documentary Slice & Dice: The Slasher Film Forever in a double-dvd set on May 13th.
Synopsis:
Ever since Alfred Hitchcock created Psycho in 1960, the story of a weapon-wielding madman - stalking and slaughtering helpless victims - has become a fixture of fear flicks and bludgeoned bombastic box office takings worldwide. Slice & Dice: The Slasher Film Forever takes an often irreverent look at this much-maligned, and frequently misunderstood, genre with commentary from some of the form's most celebrated filmmakers. Cutting an immediate presence on the screen, this delirious documentary delves into the history of hack 'em up cinema, investigates the rules of this teen-trepanning terror trend and even gives some pointers into how to survive a stint in the genre.

Say what you will about his recent output, Dario Argento is still a legend in the horror community. The Italian director has released so many quality horror films and has given us so many nightmarish images over the years that I’m surprised that I can sleep at all at night. Two of these classics from the director will be making their way for the first time on Blu-ray in the states. Phenomena and Tenebrae will both be seeing a hi-def release courtesy of Synapse Films later this year. Arrow Video has previously released both of these in the UK and abroad, but U.S. fans will finally get to see the gory details of these two films on Blu-ray. Synapse spoke to Fangoria about the upcoming release of these two films along with a pair of other features you may have heard of:

Synapse Films has recently announced its plans to release new, high-def collector editions of two of Dario Argento's films, and two of Lamberto Bava's films. Tenebrae and Phenomena from Argento; Demons and Demons 2 from Bava should all be available on blu-ray and DVD by the end of the year.
Don May Jr. from Synapse spoke exclusively to Fangoria, and had this to say:
"We’re getting better hi-def masters of Tenebrae and Phenomena, and we’re fixing the timing and color errors that were in the previous Blu-rays of the Demons films. Right now, Calum Waddell and High Rising Productions are working on supplements for Demons and Demons 2. They’re putting together all kinds of stuff for us on those two, with the participation of Simon Boswell, Alan Jones, Federico Zampaglione and Roy Bava, and many more to be announced. We haven’t started on the Tenebrae and Phenomena extras yet.
Don May Jr. from Synapse spoke exclusively to Fangoria, and had this to say:
"We’re getting better hi-def masters of Tenebrae and Phenomena, and we’re fixing the timing and color errors that were in the previous Blu-rays of the Demons films. Right now, Calum Waddell and High Rising Productions are working on supplements for Demons and Demons 2. Don May Jr. of Synapse Films recently gave Fangoria an update on their upcoming Blu-ray/DVD titles:

High Rising’s Calum Waddell tells Fango that Scream Queen: Horror’S Hottest Heroines is on track to come out next year. “It’s an all-female documentary that really espoutes the women’s point of view when it comes to acting within a genre so often associated with masculine dominance or the ‘girl in peril.’ There are no guys in front of the camera; we had no interest in that. If you want to hear the male view on horror cinema, let’s face it, you have plenty of places to hear it! So far we have almost 20 legendary names in the mix; it’s a really exciting project.”
Among those names are (pictured below, top to bottom): B-movie legend Sybil Danning, first and fifth Friday The 13th heroines Adrienne King and Melanie Kinnaman, Patricia Tallman from Night Of The Living Dead 1990, 2001 Maniacs’ Christa Campbell, Splatter University’s Forbes Riley...
