There are a host of big-name players in this year’s Best Live Action Short Film Oscar race with Wes Anderson‘s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” Pedro Almódovar‘s “Strange Way of Life,” and the John Travolta-produced “The Shepherd” all in the mix. But Tom Stuart‘s quirky British short “Good Boy” has a big name (and a big performance) of its own: Ben Whishaw.
The short follows Whishaw as a down-on-his-luck man who tries to turn his life around with the help of his anarchic mum (Marion Bailey) but figures from his past and a bygone tragedy threaten to consume and derail him. The short film blends multiple genres including comedy, drama, and tragedy and it is Whishaw’s powerhouse performance that is propelling this little indie film that could into a race full of the big boys.
Indeed, Whishaw’s performance is the film’s Mvp.

Exclusive: Ben Whishaw will reunite with director Ira Sachs to shoot an “intimate” movie about photo artist Peter Hujar.
Until his death from AIDS in 1987, Hujar was a leading figure in the group of artists, musicians, writers, and performers at the forefront of Manhattan’s downtown cultural scene.
The untitled film follows Passages, the acclaimed picture Sachs shot in Paris with Whishaw and Franz Rogowski.
Passages has been enjoying awards season attention with Rogowski bagging the best actor prize from the New York Film Critics Circle — in fact I just saw him the other night at an event for the picture out here in Los Angeles.
Whishaw, Rogowski and the film are in contention for prizes at the Independent Spirit Awards. Whishaw’s also on the BAFTA Best Supporting actor longlist for Passages.

Emma Thompson has boarded Ben Whishaw short film “Good Boy” as an executive producer.
The grief-inspired short was written and directed by Tom Stuart. It tells the story of a young man called Danny (played by Whishaw) who grows increasingly desperate as he finds himself ferrying around his mother and a dead pigeon in the back of his Vw van after a heist goes wrong.
“The Crown” star Marion Bailey plays Danny’s mother.
“Danny’s attempt to rob a bank with his overbearing mum is scuppered by the appearance of their family doctor,” reads the logline. “With his mum in the back of his van, and a dead pigeon on the passenger seat, Danny has a growing sense of desperation. But as more and more figures arrive to disrupt his day, we begin to sense that everything is not as it seems…”

Marion Bailey and Ben Whishaw in Good Boy. Tom Stuart: 'I'd say one thing to Ben or Marion and they'd run with it. I'll probably never have it that good again, because they're such extraordinary actors' Photo: 130 Elektra Films Tom Stuart’s Oscar-qualifying short Good Boy is a tragicomic tale of a man coming to terms with what life has thrown at him. It stars Ben Whishaw as Danny, who starts his day out in his campervan with plans to rob a bank, at least before his mum (Marion Bailey) intervenes from the back seat. What follows is an increasingly surreal tale that considers love, loss and the potential for moving on.
Stuart, who is better known as an actor in the likes of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, says the film presented an opportunity to feel less “boxed in” as an actor.

Love, loss and laughter come together in Tom Stuart's Good Boy, an Oscar-qualifying short that is helped enormously by the presence of Ben Whishaw and Marion Bailey (perhaps best known these days for playing the Queen Mum in the Crown).
Whishaw stars as Danny, a nervous sort who is having a very bad day when we meet him, not least because he's in the early stages of what he hopes will be a bank heist. It turns out that the Vw camper van he's in, isn't just packed with ephemera but also has his mum (Bailey) in the back, a relationship that will bend and flex throughout the course of the film.
Stuart's film feels lived in, not just in terms of the look, although the production design from Paul Zabih and the slightly retro costuming from Gabriela Yiaxis are both excellent, particularly when it comes to the contents of the van,...

A jaunty little crime spree might not be the most conventional mother-son activity but it does make for a glorious opening to writer/director Tom Stuart’s directorial debut short Good Boy. It’s a touching examination of life, love and loss, filmed around the glorious Somerset farms of Glastonbury and featuring a vintage Vw van meandering through country lanes that plays host to an array of colourful characters. Stuart has given the film a vintage lens which speaks fittingly to the surreal emotional exploration of Danny, played by Ben Whishaw, as he goes about his bizarre day kept company by his doting if somewhat overbearing mother, played by Marion Bailey. Good Boy proffers a magically tinged reflection on grief which feels both true and comforting for those of us who can relate to the stabbing reality of loss. As the BAFTA and Oscar qualified short continues to delight on its festival circuit journey,...

Ben Whishaw could propel a charming, British short film to Oscars glory with his star turn in Tom Stuart’s “Good Boy.” The film follows Whishaw — best known for his BAFTA-winning performance in “This is Going to Hurt,” his Emmy-winning turn in “A Very English Scandal,” and his role as Q in multiple James Bond movies — as down-on-his-luck Danny.
Danny attempts to rob a bank with the help of his chaotic mum, played by SAG-winning actress Marion Bailey, but he runs into trouble when memories of a tragic past begin to literally haunt him. As he tries to escape this past, a hopeful future arrives in the form of a potential suitor in a shop.

Back at the Venice Film Festival with Andrew Garfield starrer “Mainstream,” presented in the Horizons section, Gia Coppola took part in the “Life Through a Different Lens: Contactless Connections” talk on Friday – following in the (virtual) footsteps of Demi Moore and Nadine Labaki. During the chat, hosted by the festival and Mastercard, she looked back on her first visit with feature debut “Palo Alto” in 2013. “It feels sentimental,” she admitted. “But hopefully also like a good new tradition!”
“Mainstream,” also selected to screen at the Telluride Film Festival prior to its cancellation, features Maya Hawke, Nat Wolff and Jason Schwartzman, navigating the world of social media stardom. “It was enlightening to work with that level of talent. Andrew is one of the greatest actors of our generation and Maya is a new talent, so to explore that dichotomy was interesting and fun,” she said.

You have to hand it to Andrew Garfield. in “Mainstream,” a vapid social-media satire co-written and directed by Gia Coppola. Garfield, also one of the film’s producers, throws all of his loose-limbed “Amazing Spider-Man” physicality and “Under the Silver Lake” slacker slobbiness into the role of Link, a preening, pseudo-poetic stoner philosopher who could be the grotesque lovechild of Val Kilmer’s Jim Morrison in “The Doors” and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in “Joker.” What’s scary is the degree to which this excruciating film endorses his obnoxiousness. Surely we’re not supposed to like this poser, are we?
To be fair on Garfield, “Mainstream” is already close to unbearable before he appears. Its heroine is Frankie (Maya Hawke), a lonely 20-something who hates her job as a bartender in a scuzzy, magic-themed Los Angeles lounge bar, and who hopes that the videos she shoots around the city will get some likes on YouTube.
