Practical-ly Perfect: Pennywise, Past and Present with Alec Gillis, Tom Woodruff Jr., and Bart Mixon
Over the weekend, Creature Features in Burbank, California played host to an amazing panel called Creating Pennywise, which featured Tom Woodruff, Jr. and Alec Gillis from studioADI, as well as fellow legendary effects artist Bart Mixon, who was responsible for bringing the Tim Curry iteration of Pennywise to life for the 1990 It miniseries.
And even though we have already celebrated Bart Mixon’s iconic design and his ambitious efforts from over 27 years ago just a few months back (which you can read about Here), the discussion held during the Creating Pennywise panel was just too good not to share as part of Daily Dead’s "Practical-ly Perfect" series.
Read on for highlights from the panel, and be sure to check out some of the photos below, which feature an amazing Pennywise bust as well as some of his various sets of teeth and more.

Archie Comics continues experimenting with their roster of wholesome characters, planting them into ghastly horror comics similar to the company's output in the 1950's, with the new, 'werewolf story arc, "Jughead: The Hunger", that started with a 'one-shot', written by Frank Tieri and illustrated by Michael Wals:
"...'Jughead Jones' has always had an insatiable appetite. But what if his hunger came from a sinister place?
"When a murderous menace is on the prowl, taking the lives of some of the most well-known and esteemed inhabitants of 'Riverdale', Jughead and his family's dark legacy comes to light..."
"Jughead: The Hunger" #1 is written by Frank Tieri and illustrated by Pat Kennedy, Tim Kennedy, Bob Smith, Jim Amash, Matt Herms and Jack Morelli, with covers by Francesco Francavilla, Robert Hack and Michael Walsh:

Next Monday sees the home entertainment release of Underworld Blood Wars, the fifth film in the ever-evolving franchise which has taken over $500million at the box office and spawned a number of multimedia spin offs. Our review of Blood Wars called it ‘the best in the series’ and there are plans for another film, with series figurehead Kate Beckinsale back as Selene. Underworld as a franchise has never been in better shape.
The turn of the century presented a number of challenges for movie studios. As big a fan of Titan Comics as I am, and I love 95% of their output, I have struggled a little with the Dark Souls books they have put out. The format may vary, as may the creative teams, but Dark Souls in comic book form has too often seemed too fantasy generic to me. They’ve not been terrible or even bad, and I know there is a huge fan base out there, but for me they have at times come up short as good adaptations of the property they are licenced from. The Titan Comics Deus Ex book was good, the Assassin’s Creed books have been excellent, but the Dark Souls books have lacked the same spark. Maybe too much freedom in adaptation is a bad thing?...

Have you ever wondered if there was ever a mutant who failed at Xaviers School for the Gifted. Marvel has announced that they are going to explore this idea in a five part series starting in January.
Marvel is pleased to present your first look inside X-men: Worst X-man Ever #1, the new series written by Say Anything frontman Max Bemis (A+X) with artist Michael Walsh (Secret Avengers, Hank Johnson: Agent of Hydra)! Ales Kot is one of the freshest, most cerebral voices in comics. He cut his teeth on DC Comics’ Suicide Squad with a run focused on the demented serial killer Jim Gordon Jr. before taking his talents to Marvel. Kot wrote two of their quirkiest titles, namely, Secret Avengers, which made supervillain Modok a full-fledged Avenger and had a good mix of references to Jorge Luis Borges and Nick Fury Jr. and Agent Coulson having existential crises in the middle of space. Speaking of space, he has also written Bucky Barnes, Winter Soldier, which followed the titular character’s trippy adventures on distant planets depicted in the style of Heavy Metal by artist Marco Rudy.
But Kot has also worked on creator owned comics as part of the Image Comics renaissance. Zero is an espionage series created by him and his Secret Avengers collaborator Michael Walsh and has found critical and commercial success.

He has approached relevant topics such as the age of heavy surveillance that we currently live in to the difficult question of trying to understand the individual self. He has worked alongside some fantastic artists to breathe life into the perspectives Kot has and continues to tackle. From Michael Walsh to Marco Rudy and an array of collaborators from Zero alone, Kot firmly stands tall next to these great artists. This issue of The X-Files Conspiracy crossover features the biggest potential breaking point of the concept yet. Whereas the Ghostbusters in the previous issue, handled correctly, could fit easily enough into the X-Files milieu, giant mutant turtles with a penchant for pizza and ninjitsu are a pretty fantastical concept even for the conspiracy-minded Lone Gunmen.
Yet, as with the presence of ghosts in the previous issue, the Lone Gunmen react far too casually when coming face to face with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this issue. Understandably, some of this lack of reaction can be chalked up to space: with only one issue to work with, and the overarching narrative of the crossover to be serviced, no one wants to...

It seems almost inconceivable that it’s been twenty years since The X-Files first graced our screens, and that the final episode aired over a decade ago. Back then there wasn’t the rich banquet of science fiction shows on television and so Chris Carter’s creation wasn’t so much a breath of fresh air as a bolt from the blue as we were introduced to Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
2008’s The X-Files: I Want To Believe movie was a welcome return to Mulder and Scully’s world, but there wasn’t enough of the old mythology that made the show such compelling viewing in its heyday to satisfy the true X-Philes among us. It’s a pleasant surprise, therefore, to find that Idw Publishing’s new X-Files Season Ten comic has taken all of the elements of the TV show and created a five issue arc that really hits the spot.

Directed by Jonathan Shahan and Mike Walsh, who employ a chilling, desaturated color scheme, the full-footage video for "The Crazies" (which premiered last week on Bloody Disgusting) focuses on an intense performance by the band disrupted by a horde of zombies, who have much more than moshing on their minds. “Visualizing the music for Beauty In The Suffering has been a primary goal of this project from day one,” says Thrall. “For my band's first videos it just so happens the first couple of songs took a zombie apocalypse turn.

It was a big night for "Glee," but also an emotional one, as the show took four big awards at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards on Sunday, August 21 in Universal City, California. Lea Michele, in her first public appearance since the death of her co-star and boyfriend Cory Monteith in mid-July, accepted the award for "Choice TV Actress- Comedy." The show also won "Choice TV Comedy," "Choice TV Breakout Star" (Blake Jenner), and "Choice Male TV Scene Stealer" (Chord Overstreet).
Speaking on behalf of the show after "Glee" won its first award of the night for "Choice TV Comedy" were co-stars Kevin McHale, Amber Riley and Jenna Ushkowitz. The actors dedicated the award to their "brother and castmate" Monteith, and thanked the fans for their support. Shortly thereafter, emotions were even higher when Michele took the stage for her big win.

Valiant is proud to present the first look inside Archer & Armstrong #14 – the First Issue of Sect Civil War, an all-new, four-issue mini-event from New York Times best-selling writer Fred Van Lente (Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Zombies) and Harvey Award nominee Khari Evans (Harbinger)!
For centuries, the cloak-and-dagger coalition of conspiracies collectively known as The Sect has worked together to bring silent oppression and undercover tyranny to a world that thought it was free. But, now after centuries of profit sharing and uneasy alliances, the factions of The Sect are about to erupt into open conflict…and the only men that can end the insanity are Archer & Armstrong! Too bad they’re fighting for different sides! Why? How? And will either survive?

After coming in on issue #20 with a bang, Ales Kot has announced that he is officially done with DC Comic‘s Suicide Squad. The writer, best known for his work with Image Comics, is being replaced by Matt Kindt for this October’s issue #24.
Kot made the announcement on his Tumblr account, stating the following:
Dear readers —
Since the solicitations for October’s DC titles came out, I was repeatedly asked if I am no longer writing Suicide Squad. Yes, Matt Kindt is writing SS #24 and I am no longer writing Suicide Squad. Matt’s “3 Story” is one of my favorite graphic novels I read in the last few years and I look forward to reading “Mind Mgmt” when I finally find the time to buy the first hardcover collection, which you can find here. Matt Kindt is a very capable storyteller who is doing exciting things in the comics...

After nine seasons on television and two movies, The X-Files have moved to the printed page, with Idw Publishing bringing us the next “season” of adventures for FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Written by Joe Harris with art by Michael Walsh and Jordie Bellaire, the new comic follows in the footsteps of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville, telling new stories “in canon” about characters we thought we might not see again after the show was cancelled or the films ended. So how does the first issue stack up? Here area few thoughts from around the web: ***** James...

The X-Files Season 10: Issue #1 “Believers” Part One of Five
Story: Joe Harris with Chris Carter
Writer: Joe Harris
Art: Michael Walsh
Colours: Jordie Bellaire
Editor: Denton J. Tipton
Letters: Robbie Robbins
Executive Producer: Chris Carter
Publisher: Idw Publishing
Nine seasons, two movies, a video game, a spin-off, toys, comics and if that weren’t enough, we now have a new season from creator Chris Carter himself. Yes, The X-Files is back and the fact that there are still fans, even after all the pop market saturation, is a testament to the staying power of the brand. While there have been X-Files comics before, this is a true continuation of the story we have come to know and love. Idw and series creator Chris Carter have followed in the trend of continuing cancelled shows in comic book form a la Dark Horse’s Buffy and DC’s Smallville. But it...

To say that writer Joe Harris (“Great Pacific”) has his work cut out for him on “The X-Files Season 10″ is the understatement of the year. The man has been tasked with leading a new series of adventures with two of the most recognized and respected characters to come out of one of the most popular sci-fi series in the last 20 years. Tasked with both honoring and continuing the extensive canon that “The X-Files” has already established, Joe Harris takes us forward with Mulder and Scully following the events of the second X-Files film, I Want to Believe.
And you know what? The man knows what he’s doing.
Developed with the help of series creator Chris Carter, the first issue of “The X-Files: Season 10″ eases us into the newfound lives of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who are living their new lives under secret identities, far away from any...

I guess the key to enjoying anything dealing with time travel is to not overthink it, as you’ll only hurt your fragile little brain. As a fan of time travel stories from the fun (Back To The Future) to the complex (12 Monkeys) to the downright over my head (Primer), I was looking forward to Comeback’s five issues being collected as I’ve yet to read a decent comic dealing with time travel (feel free to throw some recommendations my way in the comments).

(Rns) The third season of the megahit PBS series "Downton Abbey" wraps up on Sunday (Feb. 17), capping another must-see run of ruin and redemption at Lord Grantham's stately English manor. Yet some are still left puzzled over the absence of what should be a leading Upstairs player in this colorful cast: God.
Writing last month in the flagship evangelical magazine Christianity Today, Todd Dorman wondered why -- despite the heart-rending melodrama and all the "divine trappings" that gild the 1920s scenery -- "God is a peripheral presence at best."
"There are numerous fascinating blog posts ... that search for implicit Catholic and Christian themes in the show -- good and evil, suffering for cause, various types and grades of love and devotion," Dorman wrote. "At some point, though, especially with a vicar in the family's employ, it seems odd for such connections to remain unnamed, unspoken, and, for all we can see,...

The second jaunt in our series of cinema reviews takes us all the way to Australia for an offbeat art deco charmer. Tell us your verdict, and where we should go next
On location: On the main drag in Cremorne, a well-heeled north shore suburb not far from Sydney harbour.
Crowd scene: Mostly swarms of local teenagers interspersed with comfortably-off retirees, so prepare to feel either decrepit or broke.
Back story: First opened in 1935, the art deco Orpheum remained virtually untouched until its closure in 1979. Re-opened in the mid-80s after a $2.5m makeover (courtesy of local TV personality Mike Walsh), the cinema has grown to six screens, and is a monument to art deco design, both classy and kitsch. Highlights include original glass light fittings and the baby grand in the bar upstairs (complete with ageing pianist).

Mississippi River flooding is at its worst in decades. With thousands evacuated and the levees breaking, the Army Corps of Engineers has begun an audacious Facebook initiative to keep the public informed.
Thousands of Americans are currently at risk from some of the worst Mississippi River flooding in decades. This past Sunday, 17 million gallons of flood water per second walloped residents of the city of Vicksburg, Miss. The Army Corps of Engineers, which has been helping to stem the floodwaters, is also embarking on another project--an ambitious real-time social media clearinghouse for flood victims.

Psychological research suggests the new look was designed with an eye on China--and beyond.
Was last week's redesign of the Starbucks logo an unmitigated disaster (cf. Gap, Tropicana), or a surprisingly canny move? There's always the hue and cry of the blogosphere to gauge a quick reaction, but for a more measured approach, we have something called science. Professors of marketing at several U.S. universities have been studying the effects of redesign--and on certain types of redesign--on committed and non-committed customers, and what they've found suggests that Starbucks might succeed where Gap and Tropicana failed.
The researchers have recently conducted two studies, the first of which was published last year, the second of which is forthcoming this spring. The first study, from Michael Walsh of West Virginia University, Karen Winterich of Texas A&M, and Vikas Mittal of Rice University, asked broadly: "Do logo designs help or hurt your brand?...

David Zucker, the director of "Airplane," "Ruthless People," and "BASEketball," became a Conservative only a few years ago, and instead of making movies he's now focusing more on kicking the Democrats out. Today we have a new ad by Zucker that highlights the ridiculous request by California Senator Barbara Boxer to Army Brigadier General Michael Walsh when he referred to her as "Ma'am." Boxer replied: "Could you say 'Senator' instead of 'Ma'am?' I worked so hard to get that title, so I'd appreciate it." Watch the ad below that's reminiscent of the gags in "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" movies. Video:...
