Excl: Director Talks Frankly About Poughkeepsie 's Absence

13 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

In response to this week's 2009 Mia list , director Drew Dowdle took a quick break from the production of Devil to weigh in on the absence of The Poughkeepsie Tapes , which he collaborated on with his brother John. "We were hoping that the incredible success of Paranormal Activity would spark MGM to finally release The Poughkeepsie Tapes . The magnitude of MGM's situation has been well publicized in recent days," he says, referring to the studio's recent placement on the auction block. "Sadly, I feel the best chance for our film is if another distributor recognizes the opportunity and makes a move to buy the rights. Otherwise I'm afraid it's going to remain on the shelf. Obviously it's been a very disappointing outcome for my brother and me and everyone... »

Exclusive: Rob Hall is Running with the Devil

21 October 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Last week casting news starting coming in on the upcoming project Devil, which is being helmed by John Dowdle (Quarantine). And now we have some details on just who is going to be bringing the Devil to life.

The special effects for Devil are being created by Robert Hall and Almost Human Studios. Hall, who wrote and directed (and created some pretty badass kills for) recent Grimmy-winner Laid to Rest, previously worked with Dowdle on Quarantine.

Almost Human recently created effects for the upcoming flick The Crazies, as well as for The Burrowers and the FEARNet web series (which Hall also helmed) "Fear Clinic."

"I am thrilled to get to work with the Dowdles again after collaborating with them on Quarantine," said Hall. "Even though I can't really discuss the plot details for Devil, what I can say is that this is one of the best scripts I have read in a while, »

Details on Shyamalan Story ‘Devil’

19 October 2009 5:17 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Last year, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan worked out a deal with Media Rights Capital to turn three of his original ideas into screenplays.  But here’s the twist, Shyamalan won’t be writing the script or directing the movie, just tossing out the premise that will become the thriller and then producing.

The first of those ideas is titled Devil and has been expanded into a screenplay by Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy).  Until this week we didn’t know much about the project, other than it will be directed by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle.  Luckily, Slashfilm has uncovered a few juicy tidbits that should shed some light on the story Shyamalan imagined.

Obviously, there will be spoilers beyond this point:

Devil is basically a supernatural thriller set inside of an office building. There are some people stuck in an elevator, and one of them »

17 October 2009 4:03 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

According to Variety, actor Chris Messina of Julie And Julia has signed on to star in Devil, a script based on an M. Night Shyamalan story.  Devil has some heavy duty genre cred, as it's to be co-directed by Quarantine's Drew Dowdle and his brother, John Eric, from a script by Brian Nelson, who penned 30 Days Of Night.  It will be the first in a three-film deal under the banner Night Chronicles.

If you wonder how Messina will stand up to Satan himself, remember that he battled a bitchy wife who was obsessed with a cookbook in Julie And Julia.  And Hell hath no fury like a Julie scorned.

M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Devil’ Headed for the Screen [Updated]

16 October 2009 8:48 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

[Update: We've now have a synopsis about the plot of Devil]

M. Night Shyamalan is one of those divisive directors in Hollywood - not because of politically controversial film topics like say Michael Moore, or over-the-top art house edge like Lars von Trier. He doesn’t even make it into the mainstream news media spouting off-hand remarks, or getting picked up while driving drunk, flinging anti-Semitic racial slurs. No, Shyamalan divides audiences into those that love his work and those that don’t because of his story telling; there’s no real fence-riding when it comes to his films.

Shyamalan’s next story, Devil, a horror-thriller, is being backed by Universal and directed by brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine) with actor Chris Messina (Julie and Julia) attached to star. Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night) wrote the script based on Shyamalan’s story, the details of which are being kept a tightly guarded secret. I’m not really sure »

Casting Notes: Ryan Reynolds Cross-Dresses, Chris Messina in Shyamalan-penned ‘Devil’

16 October 2009 8:25 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Couple of quick casting notes for you today. First up, Working Title yesterday paid a lot of money for a pitch from Allan Loeb to write an as-yet untitled comedy for Ryan Reynolds. The film is a "dude-in-drag romantic comedy, with Reynolds playing a jilted lover who must disguise himself as a woman and befriend his ex in order to win her back." Had to happen sooner or later, really. All manly actors have to prove their mettle not by blowing away a bunch of other manly actors, but by wearing a dress. But if Wesley Snipes can do it, and Terence Stamp can do it, then why not Ryan Reynolds? Watch this one as a double-feature with Buried to see just how much range Reynolds has got. [Variety] After the break, new casting for Devil, the film M. Night Shyamalan wrote for Quarantine writers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle »

Chris Messina is Shyamalan’s Devil

16 October 2009 6:27 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Chris Messina, recently seen in Away We Go and Julie & Julia, has been signed to star in Devil, based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan (cue warning bells) and directed by Quarantine co-helmers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle.

I’m endlessly surprised by how quickly a film can go into production after a casting decision is made: filming for Devil will start ten days from now, in Toronto, Canada. The film is a product of Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital’s “Night Chronicles,” which will produce one horror-suspense genre film a year. I don’t know if this means they’ll all be from the mind of Shyamalan, but I doubt it.

Brian Nelson, the writer of 30 Days of Night, wrote the script, which is being kept under tight wraps — likely because there’s some sort of twist involved!

We’ll see if Shyamalan’s production deal pans »

Chris Messina Getting Haunted By M. Night Shyamalan

16 October 2009 5:22 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Everyone is excited about seeing a potential career revival for M. Night Shyamalan with The Last Airbender partially because it's not his original screenplay, given him a chance to get away from the twists that at first made him cool, but late made him feel like a one-trick pony. But beware-- Shyamalan is not finished tinkering with the written word, and Chris Messina may be the next person to learn that the hard way. He's set to star in Universal's Devil, a horror thriller that Brian Nelson wrote based on Shyamalan's story. In a big departure from his recent nice-guy roles in Julie & Julia and Away We Go, he's playing a homicide detective recently off the sauce. Variety reports that filming starts in Toronto on the 26th, with Quarantine directors John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle directing. I never really wanted to give up on Shyamalan in the first place, »

Chris Messina Cast in M. Night Shyamalan Produced 'Devil'

16 October 2009 3:56 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Finally Chris Messina gets cast in a lead role! Unfortunately it's for a horror movie and I'm not sure it'll end up being that big. Messina is set to star in Devil, a horror-thriller based on an M. Night Shyamalan story that's being directed by John Erick and Drew Dowdle of The Poughkeepsie Tapes and Quarantine. Devil is the first film in the Night Chronicles series, a trio of thrillers in which Shyamalan will create the premise then pass the idea off to other filmmakers to be developed into a feature. The script was written by Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night writer Brian Nelson. Production begins in Toronto later this month. The plot of Devil is being kept under wraps by Universal at the moment, but word is that Messina will play Bowden, a "sobered-up homicide detective." Not much to go off of.
