His former partner, Fernando Bengoechea, was killed when the tsunami
hit Sri Lanka in December 2004. The couple were vacationing there at
the time.
He was born in Southern California, but he was raised in
Minnetonka, Minnesota. He went through the Hopkins school district from
kindergarten through high school, and graduated from Hopkins High
School in Minnetonka.
In 1995, he started his own design firm, Nate Berkus Associates.
Has a dog named Henry.
Graduated from Lake Forest College in Illinois with a degree in French
and Sociology.
Named Design Editor of Chicago Social Magazine in 2000.
Has a younger brother, Jesse Berkus, and two nephews.
With husband Jeremiah, has a daughter and a son, both born through surrogacy.
