Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi epic “The Creator” opens this week.
It’s his first feature film since 2016’s “Rogue One” and his fourth sci-fi film in a row, following 2010’s “Monsters,” and 2014’s “Godzilla.”
While he previously described “Godzilla” as “a disaster movie meets science fiction” and “Rogue One” as a “war movie meets science fiction,” Edwards tells TheWrap that “The Creator” is really a “father-child love story.”
Edwards also served as a writer along with Chris Weitz for the original film. Here’s how to watch “The Creator.”
When does “The Creator” come out?
“The Creator” had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on Sept. 26.
The film will be released wide on Sept. 29.
Is “The Creator” in theaters or streaming?
Currently, “The Creator” is only available in theaters and IMAX. You can search for theaters playing “The Creator” here.

In the upcoming film "The Creator," John David Washington plays Joshua, an ex-special forces agent who is going through some personal issues. The film is set in the future where artificial intellience and humans are in a war after the former nukes Los Angeles. Joshua is asked to take out the Creator, who 20th Century Studios calls "the elusive architect of advanced A.I.," who has created a secret weapon to stop the entire war and could mean the end of the human race. Joshua is supposed to destroy this weapon as well, however, it appears in the form of a little human child, making his mission rather difficult to follow up on.

The “Old Guard” sequel starring Charlize Theron doesn’t even have an official release date, but a third installment may already be brewing. “There’s an ending to No. 2 that kind of demands a No. 3, which makes me very happy,” producer Marc Evans told me at the premiere of “The Mother,” Netflix’s new Jennifer Lopez action movie.
In “The Old Guard 2,” Theron reprises her role as the leader of a group of immortal mercenaries, and Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli return as gay couple Joe and Nicky. “You’re going to see more story of Joe and Nicky,” Evans assured.
After pandemic delays, filming began on the sequel, with Victoria Mahoney directing, about a year ago. Asked if Theron was contracted for a third movie, Evans would only say, “Charlize is a producer on the movie and deeply supportive of the franchise.”

“From the moment I was born I was destined for darkness” states Bi in the opening voiceover to “Furies”. The Furies were the ancient Greek goddesses of vengeance and so makes for an apt title for this feature that is a loose prequel to the 2019 film “Furie”. This time, star Veronica Ngo takes the directors chair and co stars in a bleak tale of revenge that goes in a different direction to it's predecessor. There has been a trend for villain origin stories but it's rare to see one in East Asian cinema, especially given the character it chooses to focus on. Given how Thang Soi made her living in the original, gaining empathy for such a character could prove a challenge.

Veronica Ngô presents “Furies,” a prequel to the 2019 Vietnamese-language film “Furie.” Although a prequel, the film follows an entirely different pattern and moves to Ho Chi Minh City in the 90s. Violent and savage, the film is just over two hours long and packed with fight sequences that will leave your jaw on the floor and sometimes have you leave your brain behind too. It also releases at a great time to accompany “John Wick 4” for a weekend full of fury and bloodshed.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In ‘Furies’?
The film opens with a dark scene of violence, with dozens of men dead on the floor and a young woman being shot. This is the story of that young woman, Bi. As a child, Bi was brought up by a single mother who engaged in prostitution to make money to support them. Unfortunately, when Bi was a teenager,...

Norwegian-Vietnamese superstar Veronica Ngô is back with a semi-prequel to her 2019 film “Furie” called “Furies.” The film, which is Netflix’s first Vietnamese original, takes place in 1990s Ho Chi Minh City, brought to life with noir lighting and crowded streets. It follows three young women assassins who have been trained by a maternal figure to take revenge on the four men who control the sex-slave scene in the city. Ngô presents us with female rage through dramatic violence, a fantastic soundtrack, and edits that might put “John Wick” to shame. There’s no holding back the gore, and the film is paced with action scene after action scene for the 2-hour running time. Even still, when it tries to build on its story, it slows down in momentum, leaving its audience slightly bored with its unremarkable plot.

Furies (Thanh Sói: Cúc Dại Trong Đêm) is a Vietnamese film directed by Veronica Ngo. It stars Dong Anh Quynh, Tóc Tiên and Rima Thanh Vy.
From Vietnam comes this action-packed film, a bit sordid and sprinkled with irony, entertaining and a bit “basic”: four female assassins ready to “deliver”.
Entertaining, action-packed… and full of clichés.
Movie Review
Very funny, worth it if you are looking for a pure and uncomplicated piece of entertainment, with four girls ready to destabilize the drugs and prostitution empire in Saigon.
Very good with regard to the production and editing aspects, with a lot of style… a Guy Ritchie (obvious) or Tarantino type of movie, with a touch of brutal action in the purest oriental style… which makes it the perfect way to spend a good time with its adrenaline rushes, smugglers, thugs and… girls delivering the action.

The third feature directed by Vietnamese superstar Ngo Thanh Van — better known to western audiences as actor Veronica Ngo in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “The Old Guard” — lives up to its title with a furious display of female revenge set in the seedy streets of late-’90s Ho Chi Minh City. Despite a routine plot and some abrasive tonal shifts, this tale of a motherly mentor turning three damaged young women into deadly assassins is packed with exciting action and boasts fine performances from four killers bound by blood, bullets and all manner of deadly weapons. Following a series of rowdy screenings in SXSW’s Midnighters section, “Furies” will stream worldwide as the first Vietnamese Netflix original feature on March 23.

In "Furie," Veronica Ngô stars as an ex-gangster in a desperate situation. "Furies" takes Ngô from in front of the camera and puts her in the director's chair of the action-heavy prequel headed to Netflix. An early 2000s vibe about seedy gangland colorfulness nods to an adrenaline junkie wave that birthed titles such as "Smokin' Aces" or "Shoot 'Em Up," which isn't a complaint. Ngô orchestrates a sleaze-filled yet feminine action brawler that flips the script on once prevalent subgenre gender norms, unfazed — better yet, empowered — by the task. The hyper-intensive style favorably reminds of "Sin City" minus black and white, or even as recently as "Bullet Train," how Saigon becomes drenched in neons like Nicolas Winding Refn's got a hold of lighting rigs.

We all love Ngô Thanh Vân, better known in the West by her professional name, Veronica Ngô. First introduced to savvy genre film fans in the ‘00s through her kickass collaborations with Johnny Tri Nguyen in The Rebel (Dòng máu anh hung) and Clash, Ngô has continued to make inroads in the outside of her Vietnamese home market with appearances in films like The Last Jedi, The Old Guard, and The Princess. She is a confirmed ass-kicker, with fighting skills that rival any big-time action star of the last two decades. Four years ago, she starred in director Le-Van Kiet’s Furie, at this year’s SXSW she takes...

"Either you end this with me, or run away for the rest of your life." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for Furies, an action movie from Vietnam. This will be premiering at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival in a few weeks before it's streaming on Netflix worldwide at the end of March. Three furious vigilantes unite to take down a sinister crime syndicate that controls the mean streets of '90s Saigon in this prequel to Furie. If you haven't watch the original, it's awesome (on Prime Video). A mysterious woman trains a trio of girls to take revenge on a criminal gang that abuses females. The three warriors risk everything to challenge this corrupt empire. Furie fight choreographer, Samuel Kefi Abrikh, returns again for this. The Princess opens with the title character waking up groggy to find herself locked in a tower with only vague memories of how she got there. Within minutes she has to deal with a pair of soldiers with ill intent, both of whom she quite violently dispatches with moves that include a lethal kick and a hairpin through the eye.
As that probably told you, The Princess tosses all notions of historical accuracy, or any kind of accuracy really right out the window. Director Le-Van Kiet takes Ben Lustig (The Thirst) and Jake Thornton’s script and runs with it. After his last two films, he knew he needed to repeat the success of his last hit, the female-fronted action film Furie.

In most stories, a princess trapped in tower will need a man to save her. Joey King’s unnamed Princess isn’t like that. Furie director Le-Van Kiet’s actioner attempts to take a female lead and invert The Raid, with her facing off against a seemingly unending phalanx of enemies as she descends the tower where she’s being held captive, prior to her wedding to the evil and ambitious Julius (Dominic Cooper).
Initially, the presence of Joey King and the fact that this film (in the UK) would be launching on Disney+ made me think it would essentially be Enchanted with swords; a stereotypical Disney princess finally fighting back violently. Kiet and writers Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton lean into this a little in the film’s opening, which springs The Princess’ fighting skills on us when guards come to her room. There’s something kind of remarkable about watching a 90-minute film that only has a single idea spread across its entire running time — “what if ‘The Raid,’ but about a fairy tale princess trying to fight her way down from the castle tower where she’s been imprisoned by an evil suitor?” — but my awe at what passes for a movie these days was no match for my disappointment in this one. so undercooked that it feels like an AMC psy-op designed to make you run to the nearest multiplex and beg for a ticket to whatever’s showing next. Even Gru feels good in a place like this.

Practically everybody in “The Princess” has a name, except the princess. Played by “The Kissing Booth” cutie Joey King as an anything-but-passive heroine, the movie’s anonymous eponymous protagonist isn’t a proper character so much as a one-dimensional empowerment symbol: “The Princess” represents the antithesis of every fairy-tale damsel who sat around waiting to be whisked away or married off. She begins the movie locked in the top floor of the castle, wearing a wedding dress and iron shackles, and ends it drenched in more blood than Stephen King’s Carrie, some of it hers, but most belonging to all the men who’ve underestimated her.
Over the course of the next hour and a half, “The Princess” hardly stops to catch its breath. Whatever Disney movies may have led you to believe about royals named Ariel (she sings!) and Belle (she reads!), this one learned Krav Maga behind her father’s back,...

“The Princess” opens on a muddle of well-known fairy tales. The titular royal lies unconscious in an ornate dress, her wavy locks strewn across the pillow. Flowers surround her bed. But unlike Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, she awakens on her own and proceeds to beat the ever-loving hell out of two brutish guards. Though that opening promises some kind of meaningful subversion, this film has just one brave question to ask: “What if a princess could also kick your ass?”
The shrug-worthy answer – “Then she would probably kick some ass, I guess” – makes for the bulk of this facile, plotless movie.

Joey King isn’t messing around in the first trailer for the new 20th Century Studios film “The Princess.”
In the trailer, which you can watch above, King plays a strong-willed princess whose father tries to force her to marry a cruel sociopath. When she refuses, she’s kidnapped and locked in a remote tower of her father’s castle.
That doesn’t stop her for long though, as she fights her way out of the tower, taking down every knight in her path. Set to the tune of Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation,” King begins her takedown.
“I’m not a piece of property to be traded,” she says in the clip, adding: “But these guys f—ed with the wrong princess.”

"I'll never stop... until I'm holding your still beating heart." 20th Century Studios has revealed an official trailer for a new action film titled The Princess, a sort of action remix of Rapunzel (and other similar Disney princess stories). The ultimate feminist "update" on these classics, by having her fight back and kick ass. I guess. It's produced by Neal H. Moritz of the Fast and the Furious franchise. When a strong-willed princess refuses to wed the cruel sociopath, she is kidnapped and locked in a remote tower of her father’s castle. With her vindictive suitor intent on taking her father’s throne, the princess must save the kingdom. Joey King stars, with Dominic Cooper, Olga Kurylenko, and Veronica Ngo; directed by Vietnamese filmmaker Le-Van Kiet. This looks super cheesy, which is probably why they are dumping it direct-to-Hulu instead of in theaters. But it might still be entertaining?...

Joey King’s upcoming film “The Princess” has a premiere date on Hulu.
The 20th Century Studios film will drop July 1.
No ordinary story about a princess, King’s film is described as an “action-packed fight to the death set in a fairy tale world.”
Here’s the official logline: When a beautiful, strong-willed princess refuses to wed the cruel sociopath to whom she is betrothed, she is kidnapped and locked in a remote tower of her father’s castle. With her scorned, vindictive suitor intent on taking her father’s throne, the princess must protect her family and save the kingdom.
Le-Van Kiet directs from a screenplay by Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton. King and Guy Riedel are executive producers. Neal H. Moritz (the “Fast and Furious” franchise), Toby Jaffe (“Total Recall”) and Derek Kolstad (“John Wick”) produced the film.

Deadline reports that Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will all return to reprise their roles. Netflix has tapped Victoria Mahoney to direct its sequel to “The Old Guard,” the superhero action-adventure led by Charlize Theron.
“The Old Guard” premiered on Netflix in July 2020 and, by the streaming service’s vague metrics, appears to have been a hit, garnering 78 million views in its first four weeks. Along with Theron, the returning cast will include KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Gina Prince-Bythewood directed the first film, based on the comic book by Greg Rucka, but opted not to return for the follow-up because she’s busy working on several projects, including Sony’s “The Woman King” starring Viola Davis. Prince-Bythewood was eager to pass the reins to Mahoney, who recently served as second unit director on the J.J. Abrams-directed “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

Although continuously snubbed by critics and festivals, action movies still retain their popularity among mainstream audiences in particular, while a number of them frequently cross towards the cult category. The golden age of these movies, which parallels the pick of Hong Kong cinema and particularly of companies like Shaw Brothers, Golden Harvest and Milkyway Image, is long since gone. However, excellent productions continue to be released every year, with the scepters having been passed on to the Asean countries, particularly after the immense success of “The Raid”, which essentially kick-started a whole trend. At the same time, China/Hong Kong and S. Korea continue to release blockbusters of the category, while Japan always has the anime/manga adaptations, which frequently prove quite successful.

Editor’s note: Judging from last year’s positive response to our Read the Screenplay series, Deadline is kicking off a new season of publishing the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race. Stay tuned for more, but Spike Lee is a pretty good place to start.
Spike Lee struck gold in 2019 when he and collaborator Kevin Willmott, along with Charlie Watchel and David Rabinowitz, took home the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for BlacKkKlansman — Lee’s first-ever Academy Award. With Da 5 Bloods, that movie’s follow-up has already garnered awards-season buzz.

Years before their celebrated turn in the martial arts vehicle Furie, director Le-Van Kiet and star Veronica Ngo were involved in one of the first Vietnamese horror entries with their take on the haunted house style. You may think you haven’t seen Veronica Ngo before, but you have, especially if your stream Netflix. Like her character Quynh, the immortal partner of Andy (Charlize Theron) in The Old Guard, she’s been all over. She was the radio propagandist Hanoi Hannah in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods; she also played Tien, the Inferni Elf assassin pursuing Will Smith in Bright, as well as and the Kung Fu assassin Mantis in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny; her tour de force, Furie, is on Netflix too. Made in Vietnam, Furie was submitted to the Academy Awards as an International Feature Film entrée. Beyond Netflix, and in a galaxy far, far away, she played Paige Tico, the rebel martyr and Dreadnought bombardier who was the sister of Rose in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Netflix has posted on social media that the Charlize Theron Gina Prince-Bythewood Skydance movie The Old Guard could easily become one of the streamer’s top 10 original movies. With no small amount of fortune-telling, the streamer is estimating that the pic will be seen by 72M households withing four weeks.

The movie, based on Greg Rucka’s graphic novel, who also wrote the screenplay, follows a covert team of immortal mercenaries who are suddenly exposed and must fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.
