This is the Pure Movies review of Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron, Rafe Spall and Guy Pearce. Written by Lisa Keddie. Director Ridley Scott was quoted as saying that Prometheus was a film that would ‘stand on its own’, apart from the Alien series. It’s fair to say that the sweeping, opening 3D vistas and alien mutation on the IMAX screen are truly spectacular to watch, so there is a lot of genuine expectation from the start – and for the newcomer, it’s quite a show of effects prowess to be initially engulfed by.

This is the Pure Movies review of Ill Manors, directed by Ben Drew and starring Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrein and Natalie Press. Written by Lisa Keddie. “We are all products of our environment”, is debut writer-director Ben Drew’s (Plan B) chillingly frank poster statement. This is never a truer word said and kind of stating the obvious too. But far from falling into the gangster genre trap of having to suffer one’s lot in life, Drew does try to emphasise that we all have free will – however hard the going gets. This is what makes his film, iLL Manors, set in east London’s Forest Gate area all the more intriguing than the usual youth hardship offering. The story starts out in much the same way as other raw, gritty and unforgiving London-based crime dramas. However, it interweaves the lives of various characters of various ages and various...

This is the Pure Movies review of Red Tails, by George Lucas, directed by Anthony Hemingway and starring Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nate Parker, David Oyelowo and Tristan Wilds. Written by Lisa Keddie. When you have a dream project, you want to do it the utmost service. The fact that Star Wars guru George Lucas is so passionate about the heroic feats of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter-pilot squadron in WWII, means that he may be guilty of over-cooking the pudding while trying his hardest not to lean proceedings more towards a civil rights piece.

This is the Pure Movies review of Men in Black 3, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement, Emma Thompson and Nicole Scherzinger. Reviewed by Lisa Keddie. The fact that the second MiB film seems to draw a complete blank either means it was totally unforgettable tripe or someone’s been trigger happy with a Neuralyzer. Needless to say, it’s a happy predicament to be in as having watch the first film recently, to then watch the third in the series the latter nicely ties up the J and K relationship and explores a deeper bond. In fact, mimicking the Back to the Future series – second film being duff and the third redeeming the franchise, there is also a bit of time travel involved. That’s not to say there aren’t a few soggy, bloated parts full of unnecessary banter,...

This is the review of Young Adult, directed by Jason Reitman, written by Diablo Cody, and starring Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Patton Oswalt and Elizabeth Reaser. Written by Lisa Keddie for Pure Movies. High school reunion flicks are ten a penny, and play to our morose curiosity of what others are up now, and how better/worse others have faired since leaving education. Up in the Air director Jason Reitman has teamed up with Academy Award-winning writer Diablo Cody of his other hit teenage dramedy, Juno, to take this ‘home-coming’ idea to depressing new levels of self reflection and blacken humour that the results of unregulated and misguided nostalgia can generate.

Welcome to our new regular section in which members of the HeyUGuys family discuss a variety of topics concerning all things cinema.
We’ll pick a topic inspired by what’s happening in the world of film and invite our writers to voice their opinions, an invitation we extend to you. If you want to submit your own answer, or respond to an answer from one of our writers, then please do so.
No doubt you’re all aware that George Lucas has jumped on the 3D bandwagon and has begun retrofitting the Star Wars series. Not only have the results for the new version of The Phantom Menace been rounded dismissed as below-par by many, but the majority of fan are questioning the need for such a conversion at all (do we really need to see Jar-Jar Binks get his tongue “hilariously” caught in a laser beam in all its three dimensional glory?...

This is the Pure Movies review of Fast & Furious 5: Rio Heist, starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Dwayne Johnson, Elsa Pataky, Eva Mendes and Gal Godot and directed by Justin Lin. Written by Lisa Keddie. Petrol heads unite; it’s the return of throbbing muscle cars tearing up the streets and desert highways with a bunch of thrill-seeking car enthusiasts at the wheel. Well, kind of, but the noise and adrenaline is certainly still there in full dramatic force. Once you’ve adjusted your ears, seasoned Fast-franchise director Justin Lin throws in a dusty desert chase at the very beginning for good measure for fans who have been waiting a couple of years for the next instalment. Apart from trying to work out (spoiler) how a car can flip a coach and still stay intact, lap up this incredulous first stunt because the latest film...

This is the Pure Movies review of Hop, directed by Tim Hill and starring Russell Brand, James Marsden, Kaley Cuoco, Hank Azaria, Gary Cole, Elizabeth Perkins, Hugh Laurie, Tiffany Espensen and David Hasselhoff. Written by Lisa Keddie for Pure Movies. Admittedly, Russell Brand is an acquired taste, and if that taste is slowly turning sour in the mouth after endless media reports about the Brand marriage and rising Brand transatlantic stardom, you would be forgiven for releasing a disparaging groan at the mere mention of Hop – a film voiced by Brand. Much as this thought first curled the toes, the comedian actually tones down his (often) X-rated banter to bring as much heart, spirit and soul to little E.B., the Easter Bunny-in-waiting that it’s hard to wipe the silly smile off your face and grumble. And parents can breathe a sigh of relief, too – their little darlings will...

This is the review of The A-Team. The A-Team (2010) stars Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, Sharlto Copley, Patrick Wilson, Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson and Dirk Benedict and is directed by Joe Carnahan. Reviewed by Pure Movies writer Lisa Keddie. A-Team, we have a problem… Trouble is, not sure if you can help us? We need to get back down to earth and have our eyeballs re-attached into their sockets, please. To say that there isn’t lots of big, brash and ballsy fun to be had with Joe Carnahan’s film version would be untrue, including Bradley Cooper as Face in fine, tanned form to salivate over, and Sharlto Copley giving the original Murdock a run for his money in the loopy stakes. The A-Team is definitely summer popcorn fodder that will fill cinemas and thrill youngsters with no loyalty to the 80s first time around – and in this respect it fulfils its brief.
