Jug Face (2013)
Written by: Chad Crawford Kinkle
Directed by: Chad Crawford Kinkle
Cast: Lauren Ashley Carter (Ada), Daniel Manche (Jessaby), Larry Fessenden (Sustin), Sean Bridgers (Dawai), Alex Maizus (Emaciated Boy), Sean Young (Loriss), Mathieu Whitman (Bodey)
I gotta say that this movie could be about anything. Let me present a few possible scenarios: A poor, homely, simpleton girl that is abused by those more fortunate than her, and hopefully, she executes a cold and calculating plan of revenge using supernatural means? Nope. Maybe a backwoods girl possessed by something unholy whose only salvation is an exorcism by a righteous crusader? No, but closer than the first option.
“Jug Face” begins with Ada, a young rural girl getting crudely deflowered in the woods by her boyfriend perhaps, unfortunately more like her brother. A few weeks later, she suspects and then confirms that she is pregnant.

Jug Face was just released to theaters and we were given the opportunity to have actress Lauren Ashley Carter take part in our latest Q&A feature to talk about her role in the movie. Aside from discussing her favorite on-set memory and other Jug Face details, she also talks about her love of horror movies and what’s next:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. Can you tell us how you became involved with Jug Face? Was it something you heard about and auditioned for or did they reach out to you specifically for this part?
Lauren Ashley Carter: Thanks for having me! Andrew Van Den Houten and I have worked together previously on two films, Rising Stars and The Woman. He asked me to read the script and tell him what I thought. I called him after I finished and told him I really liked it.

Title: Jug Face Director: Chad Crawford Kinkle Starring: Lauren Ashley Carter, Larry Fessenden, Sean Young, Daniel Manche, Mathieu Whitman, Sean Bridgers A rising tide of dread and desperation marks “Jug Face,” a low-budget, independent slice of Southern Gothic characterized by a solid technical package. The freshman feature effort of writer-director Chad Crawford Kinkle, this psychologically rooted horror film recalls the movies of Lucky McKee — and with good reason, since the “May” and “Sick Girl” director serves as an executive producer here. The story unfolds in a rural, backwoods community, where moonshine peddled once a month to city folk seems to be the only connection to the outside world. Teenager [ Read More ]

Face of Another: Kinkle’s Backwoods Horror a Promising, Faulty Debut
Like a low-fi hybrid of Winter’s Bone and Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery comes Chad Crawford Kinkle’s debut, Jug Face. Lucky McKee’s name listed in the producer credits (as well as featuring Sean Bridgers from The Woman) perhaps promises more redneck grotesqueries than the film actually delivers, but one can’t deny that Kinkle has crafted an intriguing creepathon that’s just a bit too rough around the edges to be as effective as its potential suggests. While the film establishes an enjoyable, foreboding tension, the film loses its element of surprise about the time overtly supernatural elements are introduced, unable to maintain the subtle sense of insane, isolated communities it has so painstakingly prepared.

The madness of rural or backwoods communities have always been a staple of the horror genre, but it's one that continues to inspire filmmakers. And the latest journey to the eerie is "Jug Face," a Slamdance entry this year in Park City, written and directed by Chad Crawford Kinkle. Featuring an eclectic cast including Lauren Ashley Carter, Sean Young, Sean Bridgers, Larry Fessenden and Daniel Manche, the movie follows Ada, who is pregnant with her younger brother's child and is determined to save her own life and that of her child. But things take a twist when the face on a newly crafted ceramic mug points reveals that someone must be sacrificed to the pit to prevent an evil entity from entering the community. And in this scene, we see as everyone gathers to determine what to do as they await the revelation of the next victim. "Jug Face" is...

This is one freaky poster for Chad Crawford Kinkle's Jug Face horror, starring Lauren Ashley Carter, Sean Bridgers and Sean Young. Modernciné distributes the film theatrically, with Gravitas Ventures holding video ad VOD distribution. Also in the cast are Larry Fessender and Daniel Manche. That Tagline above reminds me of Lake Placid where Bridget Fonda's work colleague and friend Myra (Mariska Hargitay) states "The heart wants what the heart wants" in a response to her stealing Kelly's (Fonda) boyfriend. The film was seen at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and we don't have a release date as of this time.

Inside, you'll find a larger look at the one-sheet for Jug Face, recently acquired by 108 Media. This is a more traditional one-sheet than the poster that looked like it was drawn by an 8th grader.
Written and directed by Kinkle, Jug Face is the dark story of a demonic power worshipped by an isolated rural community. The monster offers health and protection in exchange for human sacrifices, identified when their faces materialize on ceramic jugs fabricated by an entranced potter. Bloody chaos ensues when the newest victim is hidden from the monster. The ensemble cast features Sean Young, Larry Fessenden, Lauren Ashley Carter, Daniel Manche, and Sean Bridgers.
The film gets a theatrical release this summer.

108 Media is not only an international sales agent but works with U.S. Distribution Guru Mark Urman. They recently opened Michel Gondry's The We And The I, the Sundance-prize-winning drama My Brother the Devil, and Deepa Mehta's Midnight’s Children in the U.S.
Now 108 Media has picked up international sales for Jug Face which won the Slamdance Grand Prize for Best Screenplay by Chad Crawford Kinkle in January 2013. When producer Andrew van den Houten stated his confidence that "no stone outside the U.S. market will be left unturned", I wondered (and still am wondering) whether the same is not going to be true within the U.S. Market.
The film was produced by Andrew van den Houten and Robert Tonino for Modernciné, with Lucky McKee, Arrien Schiltkamp, and Loren Semmens serving as Executive Producers. The deal was negotiated by Rastogi and van den Houten. Gravitas Ventures has domestic VOD distribution and the film will be distributed in theaters by Modernciné.
“Working with a company that only takes select films to the international market each year allows for each film to have a unique campaign in finding the right home,” said van den Houten. “Modernciné has always enjoyed being represented by the passion and enthusiasm that people like Mr. Rastogi and his team exude. We look forward to this new collaboration and are confident no stone outside the U.S. market will be left unturned.”
Expanding the slate of films in its international sales operation, 108 Media has acquired the terrifying feature Jug Face, it was announced by 108 CEO Abhi Rastogi. Based on the Slamdance Grand Prize Winning screenplay by Chad Crawford Kinkle, international sales will commence at the Cannes Market this month.

The ensemble cast features Sean Young (Blade Runner), Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter), Lauren Ashley Carter (The Woman, Premium Rush), Daniel Manche (The Girl Next Door), and Sean Bridgers (The Woman, Sweet Home Alabama).
“Chad Kinkle has created a masterfully creepy film with Jug Face,” said Rastogi. “I’m looking forward to introducing his talent and this film to the world and we’ve already started to receive strong interest from multiple buyers in territories spanning the globe.”...

Ada (Lauren Ashley Carter, pictured below) has been impregnated by her brother Jessaby (Daniel Manche)—but that’s not the only bind she’s in. In the town lies a pit containing a deadly creature, and potter Dawai (Sean Bridgers) has crafted a ceramic face on a jug, representing the candidate that said creature wants sacrificed. Surprise! It’s Ada. Determined to save her child, she hides the jug in the woods—yet if she doesn’t turn herself in, it is said that death will come to the rest of the villagers.
It’s a twisted idea, and one that, depending on the viewer, holds the potential for political, religious and/or social allegory, not to mention issues of sexuality and womanhood. Sean Young, who plays Ada’s mother Loriss says, “To me, the pit represents corporatocracy—that she sacrificed everything to this group. That’s how I read it.

Recent cinema has seen a small handful of movies about cults or communities -- "Martha Marcy May Marlene," "Sound Of My Voice," "The Master" among them -- but perhaps the eeriest or strangest of them all is the upcoming "Jug Face." Set to premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival, we have the first exclusive trailer for the movie, and....well, just watch it, and you'll see what we mean. Starring Lauren Ashley Carter (in what is described as a breakout role), Sean Young, Sean Bridgers, Larry Fessenden and Daniel Manche, the story takes place in a backwoods community, where the face revealed on a newly crafted ceramic mug points to the person that must be sacrificed to the pit. Ada, who is pregnant with her younger brother's child, is determined to save her own life and that of her child, but the pit will keep killing people in the community unless she sacrifices herself.

“The pit wants what it wants.”
The poster tagline for 2011 Slamdance Screenwriting & Teleplay Competition Grand Prize Winner Jug Face is enough to get my ass in a seat, but the synopsis is that much more amazing:
“The pit has spoken. Dawai, the potter of a backwoods community, has crafted a face on a ceramic jug of the person that the pit wants sacrificed. Ada, pregnant with her brother’s child, has seen her face on the jug and hides it in the woods, determined to save the life of her unborn. If she does not sacrifice herself however, the creature from the pit will kill everyone in the village until she does.”
I’ve always known potters were up to no good – all that hemp and clay. No normal person would spend their day sitting at a wheel making bowls.
