Before he had the budget to stage elaborate films like “The Fountain” and “Noah,” Darren Aronofsky got his start with “Pi,” a microbudget indie that hit theaters in July 1998. Shot in stark black and white, the story of an obsessive mathematician looking for the number that can unlock the secret to nature received acclaim and earned Aronofsky a Director’s Prize at Sundance, but faded into relative obscurity as he broke through to the mainstream with “Requiem for a Dream” and “Black Swan.” But in 2023, “Pi” got a new lease on life when Aronofsky sold the film’s rights to A24, and the studio celebrated with a 25th-anniversary re-release of the film in IMAX theaters. The re-release happened on — you guessed it — Pi Day.
One year later, A24 is celebrating Pi Day again with two new releases. The first is an all-new Blu-ray release of the film, which is available...

Darren Aronofsky’s latest film “The Whale” opens in select theaters next week, but the Oscar nominee is looking backward as much as forward these days. In an upcoming interview for IndieWire’s Awards Spotlight series, the “Requiem for a Dream” director revealed that he’s plotting an IMAX re-release of his first film, “Pi,” next year to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
“When I sold the film at Sundance in 1998, I fought really hard that the filmmakers would get the movie back,” he said. “They didn’t really want to do it and they were like, ‘Fine, we’ll give it back to you in 25 years.’ So that’s about to happen and we’ve been actually scanning the negative at 8k, and we are working on an Atmos mix and polishing it up, and we’re planning to do an IMAX release on March 14, for the movie.” IMAX did...

To the casual comic book reader, variant covers may not be that big of a deal unless they’re so visually stunning that they must possess them. But for the diehards out there, they’re all the rage – and the rarer they are, the better. Not surprisingly, the soon to be launched X-Men Gold will have collectors frothing at the mouth with retailer exclusive variants.
As you may be aware, it’s Pi Day (March 14, or 3.14, if you prefer) at the time of this article’s publishing, so I can’t help but notice the timing of these specific covers finding their way online. Sure, it’s very possible that it’s all just coincidence, but you must have some appreciation for seeing Old Man Logan – complete with stylish apron – skewering a cherry pie with his adamantium claws on this fine day.

This Tuesday is Pi Day—March 14, or 3.14—an altogether awesome day if you love math or, more likely, discounts on pizza and pie.
Pi Day is a celebration of the mathematical constant π, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, which starts with 3.14 and goes on endlessly. You don’t have to be passionate about geometry to enjoy Pi Day, though. It’s become tradition on this day for restaurants and supermarkets to offer pizzas and other kinds of pies for $3.14 apiece. Here’s where to find the deals:

Today is March 14th which means that on the calendar we’re looking at 3/14. Know what that means? It’s Pi Day! If you’d like a little background on what Pi Day is, here you go. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely

For all math nerds out there, grab an extra piece of pie, because March 14, 2015 (3.14.15) is a day that adds those two extra digits to Pi Day.
As an irrational number, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter goes on infinitely, and although pi is commonly written out as as 3.14159, 3.14 is usually enough.
This Saturday is not only a day to appreciate pi: though as it also marks, the birth of late math genius, Albert Einstein. He would have been 136 today!
Former astronaut and Dancing with the Stars contestant Buzz Aldrin celebrated Einstein's birthday and Pi Day with theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking at his home.

Some people (hint: us) are celebrating Pi Day by eating many, many helpings of many, many different types of pie. Others are corralling their livestock onto a field to form the pi symbol. Not surprisingly, farmer Derek Klingenberg chose to mark the occasion - which is extra special this year because it's 3/14/15, the exact beginning numerals of the mathematical constant - with the latter. The farmer, whom we met last year after he serenaded his cows with an, ahem, moo-ving trombone cover of Lorde's "Royals," called upon the four-legged Klingenberg Farms residents for a stunt he titled "#CowPi." "Beware the Ides of March," a soothsayer tells the eponymous emperor in the first act of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Spoiler alert: It doesn't end well for him. But 415 years later, we have Twitter jokes to soothe the pain. The term "Ides" actually comes from an old Latin verb iduare, which means "to divide." "The Ides" was just a Roman colloquialism for the day that marked the halfway point of each month. Today, it's a great day for jokes about murdering salads or referencing other favorite Caesars in funny tweets. And isn't that what Shakespeare really had in mind the whole time?...

Everyone agrees that the VFX industry has reached a tipping point and that the business model with the studios must change. VFX studios, particularly in Los Angeles, are closing or going bankrupt, with Rhythm & Hues becoming the poster child for all the ills of the industry as a result of its stunning failure to stay in business despite its Oscar win for "Life of Pi." Happy 3/14, a.k.a. "Pi Day," a festive occasion in high school math wings when teachers sometimes bring in slices of Bavarian Cream and Lemon Meringue for their brainy students. Let's take this celebration of pie one step further and select the greatest pie scene in movie history. Pick one, then scroll down to see if yours matches mine.
You may have selected Octavia Spencer's scene-stealing work in The Help, or you may have picked Jason Biggs' virginal dalliance with an apple pie in American Pie. I'm going with a scene from one of my favorite candidates for "Best Movie Ever?", the amazing and touching coming-of-age jam Stand By Me, starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell as a bunch of burnout kids who embark on a trek to find the body of a dead classmate.

A group of visual effects artists are holding multi-city town hall meetings on Thursday — what is being calling “Pi Day” — to discuss its embattled industry. “We walked together on Oscar Day. We were insulted together on Oscar Night. We changed our profile pictures to green and raised awareness around the world. Where do we go from here? Let’s get together for an international town hall meeting and discuss it,” reads a promo for the event. “Pi Day” — originally suggested as a day for a walkout but not all agreed — has evolved into a multi-

Today is officially Pi Day! No, not the delicious, warm out of the oven kind—the mathematical number 3.14159…well, you know the rest. At least, if you're celebrating today, you probably do. In honor of this brainy holiday, here's a shout-out to five math-lovin' celebs who are probably adding up ways to enjoy themselves. 1. Natalie Portman: This embodiment of brains and beauty wants everyone to know "math is fun!" In fact, the Oscar winner loves the subject so much, she guest edited an issue of Scholastic Math magazine. 2. Mayim Bialik: This math-lovin' mommy and Big Bang Theory actress earned her Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. The über-intelligent...

Well folks, it’s that time of year again — November the 5th, a day of gunpowder, treason and plot, and about a billion Facebook statuses telling you so. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie might have postponed Halloween, but by Sandy, we will have our Guy Fawkes Day (or, as it is more accurately known, Guy Fawkes Night). Here are five ways to celebrate this holiday of holidays:
5. Hack the Paypal server and steal 28,000 customer passwords: Oh wait.
4. Build a gingerbread replica of Parliament and set it aflame with fireworks: For the history buffs who actually know what happened on Guy Fawkes Day.

For thousands of years, the mathematical constant known as pi has helped mankind harness the power of science to build and create a new world for humanity. Recently, though, pi has taken on an even more important role: As the cool inspiration for pop culture touchstones like Darren Aronofsky's cult classic film "Pi" and March 14, a.k.a. Pi Day. It's no longer square to be a circle.
So what could possibly make pi even better? Well, how about a giant tiger?
Yeah, welcome to the new trailer for "Life of Pi."
Of course, we should warn you in advance that there is very little actual math in "Life of Pi." That's because the pi in question isn't actually π, but rather an Indian kid named Pi Patel (played by Suraj Sharma) who ends up adrift at sea in a tiny boat filled with, well, a giant tiger.

Today is March 14, 3/14, otherwise famously known as Pi Day, a day where we get to the only thing longer than Jessica Simpson’s pregnancy, Pi. And what better way to celebrate that with a list of The Most Delicious Pies. “Because math sucks and pies rule!” — Why I had a weight problem in middle school. Here are the The 10 Most Delicious Pies On Pi Day. 10. Key Lime Pie. This tangy ass pie could work its way into the end of any meal. Has anyone ever put this pie in a taco? I’m just guessing it would be the best f*cking taco ever. 9. Banoffee Pie. I’ve never heard of this pie before, but worry not, I still want to Mrs. Doubtfire my face in it. I think it’s bananas and toffee? Who knows. I want to eat it whole and then give birth to three to four...

Jon who? Though currently embroiled in the most important semi-feud between two ridiculously attractive people since Sarah Hyland made fun of Lea Michele that one time in September, Kim Kardashian proved that she was totally over Jon Hamm by tweeting a smiley picture that gratuitously peddled her own hams. “Can’t sleep tonight…” was the winking caption she put on an Instagram photo boasting an impish grin that totally suggested the opposite. Who looks that happy when they’re suffering from sleep deprivation? I’m going to guess that Kim got at least seven hours last night.

It’s March 14, also known as 3/14, also known as Pi Day. To some, it’s the most wonderful day of the year, when math geeks and science nerds alike can join together in mathematical harmony to celebrate the majestic wonders of this baffling number. While this writer can proudly admit that she has memorized 72 digits of pi (it was for a seventh-grade math project, sheesh), it’s far more entertaining to reach into the depths of our pop culture-ingrained minds and discover ways this elusive, irrational number has riddled itself into our entertainment-based society. A few highlights below.

And now for the holiday the crew from "The Big Bang Theory" will enjoy...
At 6:02 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 23) it officially became National Mole Day. This is in honor of the chemistry constant 6.022 x 10^23 known as Avogadro's Number or simply, a mole.
National Mole Day began in 1991. According to their website, "The purpose of the National Mole Day Foundation was and continues to be to get all persons, especially students, enthused about chemistry."
This isn't the only holiday nerds love. There's also Pi Day on March 14 (or 3/14 as in 3.14) and Star Wars Day on May 4 (as in "May the Fourth be with you." That joke works if you have a lisp). "Star Trek" fans also have their own holiday, Seven of Nine Day on July 9.
Here's a quick joke from the Mole Day website to really get you in the spirit:
Q: How much does Avogadro exaggerate?

Oh, my sexy series and foynite sequences, did you think Pi Day was the only time of year to celebrate the unholy union of pastry and math? Did you think the Ven Pie-agram was as nerdelicious as it got? Think again, my flaky crusts. A woman in Seattle has invented the Sierpinski Hamantaschen. Do you not know what either of those words mean? That's okay. If you do, Happy Day After Purim! (Seattle Local Food)

When I heard it was Pi Day, excuse me ∏ Day, I knew I had to celebrate on account of my peculiar love of anything celluloid numbery in the movies as evidenced by "first and last" and anything time-stampey. Peculiar because I am terrible at and completely uninterested in math. But how to celebrate? Since Pi = 3.14159265 I added up all those numbers and divided them by three. So herewith a 12 screenshot puzzle. How did I choose the screenshots?
I randomly pulled discs a from my shelf and took a screengrab of their 3.14 mark. I randomly pointed to Dvds on my instant watch queue and took a screengrab of the 3.14 mark. If any of those were television shows I chose the 3rd episode somewhere during the 14th minute. Get it? Yes, I am crazy.

After a two-hour, back-to-back throwdown last week, The Event takes some time on Pi Day to trace the arcs of two major characters--President Martinez and Sean Walker. Both men face a world that hopes to make them powerless, and both, over the course of this week's episode, find motivations and means to change the roles they play in the conspiracy drama. As Thomas masterminds a critical heist, bringing his plan ever closer to completion, alliances between Sleeper forces and human authorities grow ever more tenuous. It's March 14, dear readers, which is better known in the math-loving community as Pi Day. In honor of this numeric holiday, please help yourself to approximately three slices of pie from our expansive pie-ffet (any kind of pie you can imagine, displayed underneath a Movieline-emblazoned sneeze guard!), and review these films that make you -- or your estranged autistic brother Raymond -- really, really love numbers.

Apparently Monday (March 14, or 3/14) is National Pi Day, a day on which the mathematical constant 3.14159265... is honored for its many contributions to society, which include frustrating future English majors as elementary kids and turning up pretty much anywhere Euclidian geometry is used.
In popular culture, Pi has inspired poems, the book "Life of Pi," a Kate Bush song and helped Captain Kirk and Spock foil a malevolent alien bent on taking over the Enterprise's main computer (watch the entire episode -- which also features belly-dancing hedonistic aliens -- below):
Sadly, the number has nothing to do with pie, but we will entertain guesses as to who is getting the pie in the face in the art at the top of this post. We'll add the correct answer later today.

In 1989 San Francisco physicist, Larry Shaw, invented Pi Day. Every March 14th (3.14), thereafter the holiday has gained popularity until, in 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution officially recognizing National Pi Day (because, apparently, they had nothing better to do with their time). But ever since its inception (yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuaaaaaahhmmmmmmm) in 1989, the concept of Pi Day has been closely associated with the consumption of pies. According to that sterling source of information, Wikipedia, Larry Shaw and his physicist friends marched around in a circle and then ate fruit pies. In fact, I think it's pretty clear that Larry Shaw just invented this day in order to have an excuse to eat pie. Everyone loves puns. Especially puns with a flaky crust.
This begs the question, which homophone is more deserving of celebration? Pi/Math, the building block of the universe? Or pie, which is crazy delicious? Let's break it down.

It’s Pi Day! (March 14…3.14…get it?) And what better way to pay homage to those first three digits in the number that never ends or repeats than by looking back at the aptly-named “Pi,” director Darren Aronofsky’s first feature film all about one man’s obsession with that pesky mathematical phenomenon.
“Pi” launched Aronofsky’s career, earning him the Directing Award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, along with an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. It was a critical success at the time, and – despite very limited release in theaters – pulled in over $3 million at the U.S. box office. Not bad for a movie made with a $60,000 budget!

Oh, Math Nerds, you clever gehls and boys, by associating your "Pi Day" with the delectability of pie, you've forced us all, for love of pastry, to sit up and take notice every March 14th. So happy day, nerds, you win again. Here's an online game of Pick Up Sticks for you mathematically inclined. (Tommy Ogden)
Did you know that there is some weird group of Pi dissenters that advocate Tau Day instead? I'm afraid they'll never win, for the Pi-heads have pastry on their side. (Tau Day)
And I know some of you more fractious fractals were saddened when this Amazing Pi/Pie shirt was no longer available at Woot. (What Is With Your One Day Availability Reign Of Terror, Woot?) I found a somewhat similar shirt over at Zazzle. Cold comfort, I know. But cold pie, is still tasty pie. (Zazzle)
