Stars: Victoria Lucie, Royce Pierreson, Harriet Walter, Joanne Rogers, Thomas Bliss, Sally Geake, Richard Heap, Chris Donnelly | Written and Directed by Oliver Pearn
For his feature debut, writer/director Oliver Pearn crafts a story set in 1964 on Aldernay (one of the Channel Islands). Agnes (Victoria Lucie) works as a telephone operator to connect the whole island through her switchboard, a role she considers leaving with her wedding day moving ever closer. Her typical day is shaken by a distressing call from a woman asking for help, which leaves Agnes intent on helping however possible.
While On The Line is confined to a single room, the story unfolds through phone calls to have conversations audibly convey what is happening. Pearn heightens the tension to terrifically make it an engrossing watch, particularly when aided by a compelling lead performance. Lucie effectively captures Agnes’ investment in this situation, as she tries proactively helping through investigations from her workstation,...

A version of this story about “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” first appeared in the Actors/Directors/Screenwriters issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
“It’s a delicate dance that you do with your subjects,” said Micah Fitzerman-Blue, one of the two writers of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” the film based on the friendship between children’s TV icon Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) and a cynical journalist based on Esquire writer Tom Junod (Matthew Rhys). To get the rights to Rogers’ life and his work as the host of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” he and Noah Harpster spent years working with the Rogers estate — whose head, Bill Eisner, initially told them, “I’m happy to meet with you, but you should know that there will never, ever be a Mr. Rogers movie.”

Fred Rogers was an icon to many. Everyone who met him and knew him says, “He really was like that.” He spoke in a soft voice and he was kind. He believed in doing good to others. He spoke to children in “Mister Rogers Neighborhood” in a soft voice, helping them to process complicated emotions as he spoke directly to the camera.
In the new movie, “A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood” editor Anne McCabe’s biggest challenge was getting the tone of Fred Rogers right. “The challenge of pacing with the movie is Mister Rogers is someone who took his time. He allowed pauses and he allowed moments of being quiet. We wanted to embrace that and not make the movie four hours long.”

Fred Rogers may be America’s favorite next-door neighbor, but the actor who portrays him, Tom Hanks, received praise of his own during a special screening of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” on Sunday at the Henry R. Luce Auditorium in New York City.
“It was a special experience, and I think we knew we were witnessing something really amazing,” director Marielle Heller told Variety about Hanks’ on-screen transformation into the man in the iconic red cardigan.
While stepping out on the carpet with her cast — including star Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson and Chris Cooper — Heller reflected on the making of the feel-good movie and the man who inspired it.
“Fred Rogers is the type of role model we don’t have a lot of right now, and we need one,” she said. “I joke that Fred Rogers was the one man that that could make me make a movie about men.

Tom Hanks (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”) and Renée Zellweger (“Judy”) sat down for a chat for “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors.” For more, click here.
During their enduring careers, Tom Hanks and Renée Zellweger have gone back and forth seamlessly between comedies and dramas, played romantic leads and won Academy Awards — she for best supporting actress in 2003’s “Cold Mountain,” he for best actor in 1993’s “Philadelphia” and 1994’s “Forrest Gump.” And in their latest films — Zellweger’s “Judy” and Hanks’ “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” — both actors masterfully transform into real people, with Zellweger channeling Judy Garland in her final days, and Hanks embodying Fred Rogers.
In conversation recently, the two actors find another point in common: celebrity encounters during their time in the service industry. Hanks was a hotel bellboy; Zellweger supported herself during college as a cocktail waitress in an Austin bar.

It took a decade for screenwriters Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue to bring their passion project, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” to the screen. But the wait was well worth it as this heartwarming film about the unlikely friendship between TV icon Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) and a journalist (Matthew Rhys) is generating plenty of Oscar buzz.
The red-hot writing team won a Peabody in 2015 for their work on “Transparent.” One of the directors on that Amazon TV series was Marielle Heller, who was immediately taken with their idea for a film about Fred Rogers. She in turn helped them land Hanks. The two-time Oscar winner had been their first and only choice to portray this Emmy-winning legend. “We had always thought of him but he had already said no. She said, ‘Give me a shot to see if I can get him.” And she got Tom Hanks in our movie.

Often lampooned for his kindness, the unwaveringly gentle nature that Fred Rogers displayed on his show, “Mister Rogers Neighborhood,” was cutting edge, if you ask Marielle Heller, director of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”
“He really actually had some beautiful radical ideas about childhood,” she said. “The idea that everybody deserves love — just the way they are — but also that we need to come up with ways for children to feel their feelings and that feelings matter and are valid — particularly when raising young boys — that’s actually a message we don’t give little kids. What ‘Mister Rogers’ did is subtle; it’s easy to overlook it. For a long time, I think people thought of him as hokey or something to be made fun of.”
Heller spoke at a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival Sunday, the day after her film premiered to rave reviews and teary eyes.
