Stone Temple Pilots’ new singer Jeff Gutt felt a lot of stress before his first show with the legendary band in 2017. “It doesn’t get any more high-pressure than that,” Gutt told Rolling Stone’s Andy Greene recently. “So much was riding on everything at that time.”
But Gutt won over fans and the band has toured steadily ever since — plus they’re about to release their first acoustic album, Perdida. The album was recorded on vintage instruments at drummer Eric Kretz’ Bomb Shelter Studios in Los Angeles. Initially, it...

Two years after introducing fans to new singer Jeff Gutt on their self-titled LP, Stone Temple Pilots will return with their new album Perdida, which arrives on stores on February 7th. It’s an acoustic record largely recorded on vintage instruments.
“This is an album we’ve been wanting to make for quite some time,” says Stp bassist Robert DeLeo. “Most of our songs start acoustically and we felt these would come across in the most genuine way if we kept them that way.”

As a vital member of L.A.’s Wrecking Crew, the group of ace studio musicians who backed countless recordings in the Sixties and Seventies, guitarist Glen Campbell was heard on songs that ran the gamut from the sunshine pop of the Partridge Family to the gritty R&B of Ike and Tina Turner. Campbell would move from session work to worldwide superstardom with 1967’s “Gentle on My Mind,” which was followed closely that year by “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” Those two songs would serve as the...

Stone Temple Pilots lost their captivating former front man Scott Weiland earlier this month to an accidental drug overdose, and now the band's remaining members are paying tribute to the late singer the only way they know how: through their music. Rolling Stone has shared a video that Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo, and Eric Kretz put together in which they eulogize Weiland with an unreleased version of "Atlanta," off the band's fourth album, No. 4. "We feel it represents one of the times in our career that Scott was truly at his best," they say before walking fans through the recording, describing Weiland's emotional vulnerability and underrated vocal performance. The original was already a soaring rock ballad for a lover, but this version, given the context, is something even more special. Go ahead and have a good cry.

We know one person who’s probably not too happy about this: Stone Temple Pilots and the group’s new lead singer, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, will release an Ep this fall and embark on a North American tour in September. After parting ways with original lead singer, Scott Weiland, earlier this year, Stp members Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz recruited Bennington to perform with them at the Kroq Los Angeles’ multi-artist Weenie Roast in May. Stp then filed suit against Weiland demanding that he stop using the Stp name and that he stop singing Stp songs. Weiland countersued. But in...

The abusive, on-again/off-again relationship between Stone Temple Pilots frontman (or is he?!) Scott Weiland and the rest of the band has reached new lawyer-assisted heights with a suit brought by the band against the singer. On the one hand there's the band—the DeLeo brothers and Eric Kretz—who accuse Weiland of such rock-star behavior as being late to shows and not communicating with them. They'd like a judge to rule that Weiland has no further right to the name Stone Temple Pilots so that they can tour the world with Linkin Park's Chester Bennington on ...

On Tuesday (May 24), Stone Temple Pilots will drop their new self-titled album, which represents their comeback after nearly a decade on the rocks and the sixth of their career. The group has survived a lifetime of trouble, from attacks from critics to the substance abuse troubles of problematic frontman Scott Weiland. But they're back on track with a new album and a killer live show, and it's time to reevaluate their entire career.
Stone Temple Pilots got off on the wrong foot back in 1993 when their breakout single "Plush" turned them into instant MTV and modern rock radio staples. Their biggest sin? "Plush" (and Weiland's vocal in particular) sounded a bit like Pearl Jam (of course, so did every other rock band who dropped a single in '93). Not every video has to be an event—although we’re made to believe it’s so with countdown clocks on artist websites and what not. So what to do when a vintage band, returning with their first new clip in many years puts out a video that, while perfectly pleasant, is nothing to write home about? Maybe just say thank you. Acts like Lady GaGa—any many before her—have elevated the music video to such a spectacular that it almost seems unfair to expect the same thing from a band like Stone Temple Pilots—even though we’d argue that lead singer Scott Weiland has just...

Last week's action-packed comic book extravaganza was "Kick-Ass," and this week Hollywood brings you "The Losers." Packed with explosions, bon mots, car chases and a scantily-clad Zoe Saldana, "The Losers" follows the lives of a government-funded special forces unit (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Idris Elba and Columbus Short) that is betrayed by their handler (Jason Patric) and forced to go underground to try to clear their good name and stop some baddies in the process. It's an action-packed adventure directed by Sylvain White ("Stomp the Yard") and written by Peter Berg and James Vanderbilt (the team behind "The Rundown," one of the most underrated action flicks of the past decade).
Like any good adrenaline-pumping shoot-'em-up flick, "The Losers" requires a handful of excellent tunes to get you into the mindset of an elite squadron of soldiers running from the American government. Hence the video playlist below, which has plenty...

'I don't see any reason why it wouldn't [happen],' Jerry Cantrell says of heading back into the studio.

The death of Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley in 2002 should have, by any reasonable expectation, ended the career of the platinum-selling rock act. But after an eight-year grieving period and the addition of a new singer, the group is back stronger than ever, with two consecutive singles landing at #1 on the Billboard Rock Songs chart. And nobody's more pleasantly surprised than guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell.
"I took my clothes off and ran down the street screaming at the top of my lungs," the songsmith joked to MTV News. "It's cool that we have something to say and there's somebody out there listening."
For newcomer William DuVall, replacing the enigmatic Staley has been a challenging journey as...

Stone Temple Pilots may go down in history as the most underrated band of all time. When they first dropped their debut single "Plush" in 1993, they were buried as Pearl Jam imitators (though that didn't stop them from doing massive sales and becoming MTV staples). They have spent the remainder of their collective career trying to dig their way out from under that label, despite the fact that they put out some of the most interesting, inventive and unforgettable music of the post-grunge era.
Case in point: On this day in 1996, the band dropped their third album Tiny Music ... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop, a confusingly named but roundly excellent collection of rock tunes. Coming off the heavy Purple, the band expanded their musical palette with Tiny Music, wandering into areas normally inhabited by shoegaze and psychedelia. Despite the experimentation (especially with the tuning and voicing of Dean DeLeo...

“What are you seeing?” is the go-to question in Austin, an answer seemingly a gauge of enthusiasm and status within the roving SXSW community. When I heard Stone Temple Pilots were playing South By Southwest, I already knew I’d be busy Thursday night. That being said, the range of reactions I got when I reported that I was seeing this veteran, mostly ‘90s band reunion was limited: folks either shot the Are You Kidding eye-roll, or were, like, that’s f***ing awesome. And, y’know, it was f***ing awesome. Stone Temple Pilots, as much as they represent post-Nirvana hard rock in America,...

You would think that with a brand-new movie to promote (a tiny little rock bio called "The Runaways" that you may have heard of by now) and a full-time job dodging pesky paparazzi to focus on, Kristen Stewart wouldn't have much time to do anything else. But you'd be wrong.
Turns out, she's also a budding rock critic.
See, after last night's "Runaways" premiere at South by Southwest, Stewart sneaked out to venerable Austin BBQ shack/music venue Stubb's to check out the indie-riffic Band of Horses/Broken Social Scene double bill. And despite the fact that the gig was perhaps the biggest Thursday night show at SXSW (well, either that or Stone Temple Pilots), Stewart braved the crowds, because, as she put it, "Band of Horses happen to be, like, my favorite band at the moment."
Perhaps wanting to share the love, she also brought her "Runaways" co-star Dakota Fanning...

Members of R.E.M., X and She & Him will join the surviving members of Big Star to pay tribute to late frontman Alex Chilton at the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas, on Saturday. The gig, which Chilton was supposed to play with his legendarily influential band, will take place just three days after the guitarist/singer passed away from a suspected heart attack in New Orleans at age 59.
The Saturday night show at Antone's will feature original Big Star drummer Jody Stephens and newer members Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of the Posies acting as a house band, with original Big Star bassist Andy Hummel expected to sit in along with She & Him's M. Ward, R.E.

Whenever a band has new material to hawk on the road, the tendency is to play through the album and merely dotting fans with the hits. Not so for Stone Temple Pilots. After a nine-year absence from the recording studio and nearly as many from the stage, the hard-rocking quartet kicked off their reunion tour at Austin Music Hall, capacity 3000, their forthcoming self-titled album wrapped and ready for debut. But only four tracks from the effort made their way to the stage. Instead, everybody was transported back 1993 to 2001, as it dawned on all just how many Stp songs...

Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland performs on Thursday

Austin, Texas — Were we, perhaps, wrong about the Stone Temple Pilots? Well, not all of us, but an overwhelming majority of the so-called rock critics, the gatekeepers whose job it is to separate the good from the bad, the wheat from the chaff? Did we completely miss the boat on Stp? Were they something more than Nirvana-bes? Were they — gasp! — actually a pretty great band?
Short answer: probably. Because on Thursday night at South by Southwest — the night when the fest (un)officially shifts into high gear — Stp put on a positively bombastic show at the Austin Music Hall. It was packed with more hits than you could possibly remember, and it served notice to the hundreds of bratty,...

While Dixie Chicks are set to make a comeback tour this summer with Eagles and Keith Urban, their splinter group Court Yard Hounds, which consist of duo Martie Maguire and Emily Robison, are going to make their debut at the on-going South by Southwest Film and Music Festival. They will perform this coming Thursday, March 18 at the intimate club Antone's.
"It's turned into such a great springboard for music and so many influential people come and listen to music," Emily told Associated Press. "You're looking them in the eyeballs, and you're in the trenches, which we feel like we've returned to the trenches somewhat to launch this new band."
Texas actually is where the two musicians live and they are glad to perform in the state. "It feels really comfortable having the first one where I live, in a club where I go hear bands," Emily said. "So many times...

Rocker Scott Weiland blames "petty jealousies" and rock star wives for supergroup Velvet Revolver's demise, insisting the band felt like a "gang" when it started out. Weiland was kicked out of the group in April 2008 and Velvet Revolver's founders Slash, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan have failed to find a replacement.
The rocker admits relationships between himself and his bandmates soured towards the end, but he takes issue with reports the stars were always fighting. He tells Details magazine, "When Velvet Revolver first got together, it was great. I got to know the guys before. Met Duff at the gym ... I was in rehab with Matt. I'd only met Slash twice - he's not the most social person. We had all been through the same experiences, and it felt like a gang."

Slash will resume his search for Scott Weiland's replacement in Velvet Revolver once he completes his solo tour. The group, founded by the guitarist and his former Guns N' Roses' bandmate Duff McKagan, has been auditioning singers since firing Weiland in April 2008.
Slash's planned solo tour in summer prompted fears among the supergroup's fans Velvet Revolver would never play again. However, the rocker insists he's waiting for his schedule to line up with McKagan's - who is rumored to have stepped in to replace Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery during the band's hiatus.
Slash tells RollingStone.com, "I think Duff is doing something with Jane's Addiction right now so we're all sort of all over the place doing whatever until we can all regroup. We did listen to a lot of singers, but there hasn't been anybody that's going to be the guy so far."

Has Lady Gaga all of a sudden become a metal icon? Last week she revealed during a radio interview that she was a gigantic fan of Black Sabbath, and now she has given a nod to a heavy band from North Carolina called the Demonstration who recorded a loud, pounding, hard cover of Gaga's "Bad Romance." She tweeted about the latter earlier today, noting, "Death metal with ice dancing + high fashion you get the Monster Ball," referencing her huge hit tour.
But how did the Demonstration end up laying down the track (which can be heard at their MySpace page)?
"We're doing a compilation that is all metal covers, and we were asked to record Stone Temple Pilots' 'Dead and Bloated,'" guitarist Jameson Vaught told MTV News. "But my girlfriend turned me on to Lady Gaga, and when we started messing around on 'Bad Romance,' we knew we had to record it.

Band names are difficult. Some of them are naturally iconic and sound instantly classic, like U2, Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. Others sound legendary only because the bands transcended them (yesterday, Chris Jericho pointed out that Audioslave really doesn't work without those particular band members, and is there really a sillier band name than the Beatles?). Still others never quite get there (no matter how many records they sold or big-time shows they headlined, Limp Bizkit will always sound kind of dumb; same goes for you, Stone Temple Pilots). When Eddie Van Halen and his brother Alex got together to form a band, they luckily didn't have to look past their surname for any further inspiration. Sure, there was a bit of ego in it, but David Lee Roth always liked to point out that "Van Halen" also sounded like some sort of hydrogen bomb, which was appropriate for the group's brand of explosive,...

Madonna is currently at work on a new album, which is expected to be unleashed some time in 2010. She has stayed relevant in the music business by constantly reinventing herself, taking in new genres and musical experiments and making them her own. She is meticulous about how she selects collaborators, because they inform the sound of the albums as much at Madge herself.
One of the confirmed producers working on the still-unnamed work is Brendan O'Brien, who made a name for himself sitting behind the boards for Pearl Jam and has also helmed productions for Bruce Springsteen, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, AC/DC and Aerosmith. Does that mean that the singer behind "Like a Prayer," "Ray of Light" and "Hung Up" is going to dive deep into the rock world and make a guitar-based album?

Though the awards for this year's best cultural achievements won't be handed out until the calendar turns over, this week has built up a bunch of buzz for statuettes. The Grammy Awards announced their nominations on Wednesday night, and though there are a few strange moments on that list, it has kept everybody excited for the work of Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. Meanwhile, today sees the release of "Up in the Air," the new film directed by Jason Reitman ("Juno," "Thank You for Smoking") and starring George Clooney. The film — which centers around the life of a frequently-flying consultant who is brought in to lay people off — is already scoring a bunch of awards and is an early contender for a bevy of Oscars.

“There’s more to be revealed and more to be told,” Scott Weiland has said about recording a new album with Stone Temple Pilots. “The story’s not finished.” Those quotes date back to April 2008, when Stp first announced plans to reunite to tour and record new music. The band has managed to keep it together since that initial tour, but there’s been no sign of a new Stp album. That is, until now. Weiland talked to Spinner recently about the prospects of the band’s first album since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da, and vowed that Stp will get to work on...
